The Slater Home

Victoria walked into her grandmother’s study to find her diligently working on something of importance. “Grandmother?”

She turned and stood up, “Victoria, darling, how are you?”

“When did you and Nicholas get back from Aunt Faye’s?” She asked, hugging her grandmother.

“We arrived late last night, didn’t want to wake you.” Anna answered.

“Oh, well, I’m glad you two came back early, I was dying of boredom.” Her focus shifted to the papers on her grandmother’s desk, “what are those?”

“Oh, going over last minute things for the town masquerade. Catering, music, guests, making sure everything is in order,” she shrugged, “I would have never signed up to be the head of the committee had I known it would be this involved. Ah, well, at least it’s going to be a spectacular night.”

“Yeah,” she trailed off.

“Something troubling you?” She touched Victoria’s arm. “What’s wrong?”

“You might need to sit, hell, I need to sit for this.” They both sat at the desk. “Grandmother, I’m pregnant.”

Anna’s jaw dropped, “w-what?”

“Yeah, I’m about three weeks along.”

“So that explains all the morning sickness, then, because that’s exactly what it’s been. Oh, wow. Well, that’s great darling, I had been expecting grandchildren, but, uh, not from you.” She peered into Victoria’s eyes, “but Trevor’s gone…”

“Mm, yes.” She nodded.

“Does he know?” She asked, still trying to take all of this in.

“Not exactly, not at all actually. He has no idea. I had to do what was best for me, for him, most importantly for our child. I mean, Trevor isn’t exactly father material.” She said, explaining herself.

“But, who’s going to father your child?” Though Anna had become quite the liberal, she still had strong family values and in her mind no child would be without a father.

“I don’t know,” she shifted uneasily, “I don’t know. But whatever you do, until I have this all worked out, you cannot repeat a word of this. I don’t need to drop a bombshell on this family yet, not until I’ve worked everything out. Do I have your word?”

“Of course you do, I wouldn’t do anything to jeopardize something of this magnitude. But, Victoria, be smart about this, no child should be without a father. And your brother isn’t exactly father material either. Lord, Uncle Nicholas, that poor child.” She shook her head. “Your mother’s going to flip.”

“Oh, I know, I know…”

Heaven Beach General Hospital

Sarah sat by her grandmother’s bedside, holding the sleeping woman’s hand. A single tear formed in her eye.

Ethan placed his hands on her shoulders, “she’ll be fine, she’s a fighter.”

April Moore walked into the room. “Hey guys,” she said gently. “I talked to your father and brother outside, and I just wanted to catch you guys up.”

“Is she going to be okay?” Ethan asked.

She smiled, “things are looking on the bright side. Your grandmother is quite the survivor. She did experience a major heart attack, however, her condition is improving greatly. Right now, the plan is to wait until she has enough strength to put a pacemaker on and after she’s recovered from the surgery, I see no reason why she shouldn’t be able to return home before Christmas.”

“Thank God it’s good news,” Sarah muttered.

“But, why don’t you guys go home and get some rest? You’ve been here since last night, she’ll be fine and trust me your father is holding down the fort quite well. Go home, get some rest, it’ll be good for you.”

“Come on Sarah, I’ll drive you to Amir’s.” Ethan said, grabbing Sarah’s things.

“No, I want to go home tonight.” She looked at her grandmother one last time before standing up and leaving with her cousin.

Jonathan’s Apartment

“I’m glad my family didn’t scare you off completely,” Alexandra said, cradled in Jonathan’s arms by the fireplace. “Most men would have bailed out on the first of my mother’s rants.”

“Ah, it takes a lot to scare me off, besides, what kind of man would I be to leave you in your moment of need?” He kissed her gently on the forehead.

“You’re a good man, Jonathan, I’ve never met someone like you before.” She leaned in a kissed him passionately. “Jonathan, I-I love you…”

A sudden banging came from outside the front door. Jonathan looked at Alexandra for a moment and then jumped up, putting on his shirt, he reached for the door. “Perfect,” Alexandra said under her breath.

“Elizabeth?” Jonathan said, surprised.

She rushed in, “Oh my God, Jonathan, have you heard?”

“Heard what?” He asked, shutting the door.

“Felicia Laurence escaped from prison late last night. They have no idea where she is, they—they can’t find her.” Elizabeth was shaking, “I’m so scared, she’s headed here now and she’s going to seek out her revenge, on, on me and April and Kate. I can’t stay by myself, she’ll kill me.” She began sobbing and threw herself in Jonathan’s arms, “I’m so scared.”

“Elizabeth, Elizabeth, calm down, you’re talking crazy.”

She looked up in his eyes horrified, “she’ll kill me!”

“Who’s Felicia Laurence?” Alexandra asked, entering the foyer.

“Oh God, Alexandra, I’m sorry, I didn’t know you were here.” She moved away from Jonathan, “I just got so worked up, I tried staying at home but every little creak—I thought it was her! I’ve scared the wits out of myself, and I didn’t know where else to go.” Another wave of tears hit her, “She’s come back to kill us! And I know she will, I know that woman all to well.”

“Elizabeth, if you’re that frightened, stay here. There’s safety in numbers and plus Felicia has no idea who Jonathan and I are.”

She turned to Jonathan, “would that be okay? I really hate to bother you, but, I’m too terrified to stay by myself.”

“Of course, we’ll set you up in the guest room.” He responded.

“I’m just so afraid of what she would do to me…”

Heaven Beach Police Station

“Inspector Weiss?” A uniformed officer walked into her office, “Chief says to go home, he sent two officers to your house for your protection.”

Kate rolled her eyes, “I have been an officer for ten odd years, I don’t need any protection, I can handle my own.”

“Chief says he insists and to keep your nephew’s well-being in mind.”

She had been so caught up in the news she hadn’t even thought of Demetrius in all this. “Those officers are there now?”

“They’re on their way.”

“All right good, tell Max he wins, I’ll go home.” She reached for the phone and dialed her house number.

“Hello?”

“Demetrius, it’s Kate. Listen, it’s very important you listen to me. Two officers are on their way to the apartment, I want you to lock the doors and don’t answer it for anyone, not even the officers.”

“Kate, what’s going on?” The young man asked confused.

“I’ll tell you when I get home, I’m leaving now. Just know this, and I’m not trying to frighten you, but there is a dangerous criminal on the loose, her name is Felicia Laurence, we think she may be coming back to town to bring harm to myself and a few others. Demetrius, it’s very important you listen to what I told you to do, the worst thing she could do to me is to harm you. Be safe, I’ll be home in a few minutes.” She hung up the phone, “so much for not scaring the kid,” she grabbed her purse and ran out of her office.

1310 Marriott Court

Simone sat in the living room of her new home, alone. She needed some time away from all the insanity that ensnared her in-laws. She sipped on her coffee, intently watching one of her all-time favorite movies, Mona Lisa Smile. She groaned, feeling nauseas.

The wind outside stirred and a tree branch tapping one of the tall windows disturbed her viewing pleasure. She sighed and tried to ignore it, she had managed to before it intensified—without the aid of the wind. A silhouette appeared through the close blind and she let out a scream. Spilling her coffee, she rushed to the front foyer to set off the alarm system and was met with the silhouette again, now standing at the all glass screen door. She had foolishly left the front door open. She pushed the emergency alarm system and a blaring sound surrounded the inside of the house. “Leave me alone Ashton!” She shouted as he sent a rock flying through the door, shattering it.

He turned around quickly and disappeared into the darkness.

She darted back to the living room and went to the fireplace. She grabbed the fire poker, ready for the intruder, or rather, her crazed ex-lover. After all these years, he had finally found her. She was shaking with fear when she heard glass being stepped on. She took in a deep breath and raised the fire poker, before fainting.

Ashton entered the living room, with a cloth covering his mouth. He walked over to the fireplace and shut off the gas valve. He knelt beside her and kissed her forehead. “I’m sorry it had to end like this Simone, but I told you, when you left, I’d find you because if I couldn’t have you, no one could.” The sounds of sirens interrupted any further speech he may have planned for their reunion.

He was long gone when the police made it to the house to find an unconscious Simone lying limply on the floor.

Heaven Beach University – The Parking Lot

Laurie began to unlock her car door when a familiar voice made her stop.

“Laurie,” Philip said darkly. He was standing by the passenger door. “Get in.”

“What?” Laurie said defiantly.

He pulled out his gun and pointed at her, “get in, now. Or so help me God I’ll blow those beautiful brains of yours out all over this parking lot.”

“Philip--” her voice was shaken, “are you kid--”

“Get in!” He shouted, cocking the gun.

They both got into her car, “Philip, this, this isn’t the way to end things--”

“Shut up and drive, to my apartment, now, pull any stunts and you’re as good as dead.” He said with such fierceness that made chills go up her spine.

She began to silently pray as she neared his apartment, but maintained all composure as to not alarm him.

Austin’s Dorm

Austin answered the door and was surprised to see Mia on the other side of it.

She caught his shocked expression, “surprised to see me?” She asked.

“Yeah, we haven’t seen each other in forever, how are you? Come in.” He moved to let her in and shut the door behind her.

“Yeah, I’ve kind of been lying low, you know? Going to therapy, going to class.” She sighed.

“Something’s troubling you, I can tell.” He sat on the couch and she followed suit. “What’s wrong?”

“I’m not really sure where or how to begin,” she shrugged, “I’ve caused a lot of damage to you, to Laurie, and, though it doesn’t make up for it, or even really do much of anything, I’m sorry. I’ve realized the errors of my way, as cliché as that sounds.”

Austin’s cell phone began ringing, he looked at it, unidentified number. He shut it off and tossed it aside, “sorry.”

She smiled, “it’s fine. But, yeah, Doctor de Paul has helped me come to a lot of realizations. Some I’m not so happy about, but we all make our mistakes, right? Just some more than others, I suppose. I guess, I’ll cut to the chase. Austin, one of these realizations I’ve come to is location—there’s nothing more for me in Heaven Beach. I’ve lost you, I’ve lost all my friends, and though I might get them back, things will never be the same as they were before. Doctor de Paul and I also feel it’s important for me to be with my family right now, instead of pushing them away, as I’ve been doing. So, all of that leads me to this, Austin, I’m leaving Heaven Beach, tonight and since you’re the only person I haven’t completely pissed off and who doesn’t completely despise me, I wanted to say goodbye to you. Austin, in whatever sick, demented fashion I carried it out with, I really did love you, and I would have done anything to keep you. And all those stunts I pulled were because of that. But that’s said and done with and I want to bring closure to us—whatever that warrants. I loved you Austin Philips—Robinson, whatever your name is these days,” she touched his face and smiled. At this she got teary eyed, “I’m going to miss you.”

Austin pulled her in close and they held each other. All the past was swept away at this moment, and they were just two old friends, embracing, for probably the last time.

She pulled away and dried her eyes. “I think it’d be best not to drag this out any longer.” She smiled at him again and rose. Opening the door, she turned around to face him again, “Goodbye Austin, the man that taught me to love again. I’ll never forget you.”

With that, she was gone. He reached for his cell phone and turned it back on. A beat later, it rang again, the same unidentified number. “Hello?”

Laurie’s voice came over in a hushed whisper, “Austin, I’m at Philip’s—he’s completely snapped or something. He’s locked me in his bedroom. I need help…”
