Episode #4

EPISODE #4

Sarah whipped around, “Simone… what are you talking about?” She made a face at her and then smiled at Kate.
“Inspector she is lying about everything she hired--”
“Inspector!” Sarah screamed, “um… maybe we can discuss this more in depth later?”
“Uh… sure.”
“I’ll call you tomorrow, we’ll have lunch.”
“Sounds fine. Good night.”
“Good night.”
Sarah’s phony smiled lasted until Kate hit the door. “What the hell are you doing?”
“I heard you talking to Noah in the living room. Those poor people, killed because of you. I’m not letting you get away with this Sarah. There’s no excuse in your behavior.”
“What are you my damned mother? Don’t talk to me like that.”
“For once you need to be responsible for your actions. I’m going to tell the inspector right now.”
Simone turned around but Sarah grabbed her wrist and sharply turned her around. “You listen here you little twit. I will end you and Noah if you think of telling anyone about this understand? I have a little ammo of my own. I swear to you I will end you and Noah.”
“Noah loves me…”
“We’ll see how much he loves you when his bank account is empty. My father is a senator he has connections. Then you and Noah will be living together on the streets.”
“I have money.”
“Not enough to keep Noah happy.” She jerked Simone towards her. “I will end you two.”
Simone pulled away from her grip. “You make me sick. If you were lying on the street bleeding to death I would spit on you and walk away.”
“Ooo good one. Get out my face bitch.”
“I was close to my grandfather too and we he died it was hard but I didn’t make everyone’s lives around me hell.” She quickly walked out of city hall. She wanted Sarah to pay for her actions but it wasn’t worth losing Noah… She sighed she had been defeated.
--------------------
The buzzing sound of the alarm clock awoken Austin, he rubbed his eyes and shrugged. He was definitely not a morning person. He stumbled over to the counter and fixed his daily pot of coffee, his newest addiction since he had started college. He looked at the bed. It was neatly made but empty. He got dressed poured the coffee into a large travel mug and headed out the door.
--------------------
April stood over Kyle completely dressed and with two large cups of black coffee in her hands. “Get up sleepy head.” Kyle groaned and rolled over. “Hey mister you do have a job you know. You’re only district attorney.”
He sat up and ran his hand through his messy bed hair.
“Here you go sunshine.” She said sarcastically as she handed him his cup of coffee. “I’m going to work. Maybe we can meet at your house for dinner or something?”
“Mhmm…”
“I’ll take that as a yes. See you tonight.” She walked out of the bedroom.
What had happened the previous night replayed in his mind. He had hoped it was just a dream, a really bad dream. All this stuff to do, hire a new secretary, hire an assistant district attorney, hire a law clerk. It was all mind boggling he didn’t ask for all this…
--------------------
Noah Robinson was fully dressed. Simone had wakened him last night when she got back in bed after going to find Sarah. Her face read defeat all over it. He bent down and kissed her forehead. He had hoped his sister wasn’t too rough on her. He opened the door and walked downstairs.
“Good morning.” Charlotte said. “Off to work?”
“Yes. Twelve hours.”
“Well you did want to be a doctor.” She smiled.
“Yeah but I had no idea would be like this.”
“Will you be working with that lovely April Morris?”
“Yes. She’s my mentor… I guess.” He looked at his watch, “I’m going to be late. I have to go.”
“Don’t forget your coffee and muffin.” She handed him a travel mug and blueberry muffin. “Have fun.”
“Oh yeah, you bet.” He walked out of the door.
Now why couldn’t her other grandchild be pleasant like that she pondered.
--------------------
Phyllis woke up from her nap. She walked over to Faye and sat on the chair next to the bed. She had a dream that Faye had woken up and everything was fine. Too bad that dream wasn’t a reality. She grabbed her hand. “I always heard that before people die the last thing that goes is their hearing. I wonder if it’s the same way with being a coma. I wonder if you can hear me Faye. I hope you can. I hope you know that there’s someone here that loves you very much and wants you to wake up.” She began to tear up. “I love you Faye and I miss you. It should be me there instead of you, it really should. I hate that it took us so long to get along… We were stupid Faye, we really were. We wasted all those years feuding. I don’t even remember what it was about. I guess I always knew you were mother’s favorite and that made me jealous of you. I always swore that if I had more than one child that I would treat them both as equal because I hated how you were always chosen over me. I suppose its human nature though as much as I try to hide it I treat Nicholas different than I treat Victoria. Maybe it’s because he’s my baby. I don’t know.” She rubbed her sister head. “You’re so brave and so strong Faye. I know you’ll pull out of this. I remember when I was nine most of New York had been hit by that huge blizzard. Everything was frozen, including our lake out by the house. We were so excited we woke up. We put on our snow clothes and put on our ice skates and were skating around laughing and have a great time. Mother was out there telling us to be careful out there, we didn’t pay attention to her. Daddy was in the shed getting down our sleds. The first big snow of the season, it was great. We had been skating for an hour I suppose and something happened, it happened all so fast. I was skating in the center yelling ‘chase me Faye! Come on, what are ya chicken?’ And suddenly the ice just fell from my feet and the icy water engulfed me. It was so cold… it felt like a thousand knifes were stabbing me all at one time. I heard mother screaming from the edge and you were so courageous. You just jumped in that water like it was nothing and pulled me out. I didn’t know how to swim and I was drowning and I kept screaming ‘Faye! Help me!’ and you did, you just jumped in and saved me. I’ve never forgotten that Faye… you saved me. You saved my life. And now I look at you and I can almost hear you yelling ‘Help me Phyllis, save me.’ And there’s nothing I can do… nothing at all. I-I just feel so powerless. I want to help you Faye. I hope you know that. I really do…” Phyllis rested her head on Faye’s chest and cried.
--------------------
Victoria walked into the kitchen where her grandmother was pouring a cup of coffee. “I fixed some tea for you and Nicholas. I know you all don’t like coffee.”
“Thank you.” She mumbled. Her grandmother handed her a cup of tea that was made to her preference. “I just can’t believe it…”
“I know. But we have to stay strong for Faye, understand?”
She nodded. “Are you leaving?”
“Yes.”
“Want me to drive you?”
“No I already called a cab.”
“I’ll call William today.”
“I wanted to talk to you about that… I don’t think we should tell him.”
“Why not? He’s her husband. He deserves to know.”
“There’s no need to worry him about it. I know she won’t want us to tell him. He’ll never let her come back down again. You know how overprotective he is. Besides what if she comes out of this coma today or tomorrow? All that drama for nothing.”
“And what if she doesn’t? I’ll give her a week but after that I’m calling William. Don’t you think he has the right to know?”
“In a week Faye will be out of the coma.”
“You don’t know that for certain grandmother…”
“Well I can hope and pray can’t I?” She held her granddaughter in her arms and kissed her forehead. “I’ll see you later.”
“I’ll be there at one or two.”
“Okay.”
“Make sure mom doesn’t drive herself home.”
“How can she when her car isn’t there?”
“Ah… So that’s why you had my drive her car last night.”
“Yes.”
“Little sneaky eh?”
“That’s me.” Anna smiled and walked away.
Victoria grabbed her cup of tea and opened the front door to pick up the newspaper. Unfortunately it was the same time Sarah picked up her paper. They exchanged scowls and slammed their front doors.
She walked into the living room and read of the murders. It had made front page. “How awful…” After reading the article she placed the paper down and walked over to the window, looking out to the backyard. She thought of what she could do to Sarah for payback. Nothing right now could match the magnitude of pain Sarah had caused. “I should just lay low for a while and get her when her defenses are down.” She muttered.
“What sis?” Nicholas said as he sat down on the couch with a cup of tea in his hand.
“Oh… nothing. Nothing at all. You know what?”
“What?”
“I think I’m going to go for a swim. I can’t think of the last time I did that.”
“Cool. I’ll join you.”
“Sure.” She hugged her brother. “I’m glad you’re home mister rock star.” She giggled as she let go of him. She wished she could tell her brother about her rape and that the man who raped her was back in town. She had a nightmare last night that he had broken into the house, killed her family and came upstairs to rape her again. She shuddered.
"Are you okay?"
"What?"
"Your face just turned white. Is something wrong?"
"No... of course not. I-I'm fine."
--------------------
Kyle walked into city hall. He was surprised to see it up and running. People walked around as if nothing abnormal had happened.
“Good morning Mister Roberts.” The city hall secretary at the front desk said.
“Good morning.” He walked past her desk and into his part of the building. He opened the door and saw the desk empty. Everything had been cleaned up from last night. He wouldn’t get the usual, “good morning Kyle, here’s your mail and messages.” He sighed and walked back to his office to begin the day’s work.
The city hall secretary walked into his office. “Sorry to disturb you Mister Roberts.”
“Oh it’s fine. What is it?”
“I’m sending one of my girls from upstairs to be your secretary, until you find another one. I figured with your caseload you couldn’t answer phones all day. She’s real nice. She’ll be here in just a minute.”
“Okay thank you Gloria.”
“You’re welcome.”
A new secretary… he couldn’t stand the thought. He heard someone in Martha’s old office turning on the computer and messing with papers. He walked out of his office and to the front.
“Hi Mister Roberts.”
“Hello.”
“I’ve been doing this for a while so I know what I’m doing.”
“I didn’t doubt you did.”
“Thanks. Look I just want you to know I’m not trying to steal Martha’s job or anything. I knew her she was a very nice lady. I’m just a filler until you get a new secretary.”
“No problem. Let me know if you need anything.”
“Okay.”
He walked back to his office and sat at his desk again. A buzzing noise came from the phone. “Claire line one.”
“Thank you.” He picked up the phone. “Claire why are you calling me at work?”
--------------------
“Are you kidding me?”
“No. You’ll be assisting me with Faye Abbott.”
“Do you know who she is?”
“Yes… What are you getting at Noah?”
“Faye’s a Slater.”
“Right…”
“I’m a Robinson.”
“Okay…”
“You don’t know the Slaters and the Robinsons? Big family feud? It’s been going on for like ten years. They’re not going to let me get within one hundred feet of Faye.”
“Well Noah, I need help with this and you’ve never dealt with coma victim before. It’ll be great practice.”
“April…” He shrugged.
“Besides you are a professional right? You think I get along with every patient’s family? I don’t. You just have to learn to deal with things like this.”
“All right…”
April and Noah walked into Faye’s room. Anna stood up. “Hello April… Noah.”
Noah rubbed the back of his head and looked up, “Hi…”
“I’m assuming you already know each other. Noah is an intern at the hospital and he’s going to be helping me with Faye.”
“I don’t know why he’s interning. His family owns the hospital. He could get any position he wanted at the snap of a finger. I’m surprised they haven’t put poison in Faye’s tubes yet.”
“Hey!” Noah snapped.
April quickly grabbed Noah’s hand. “Come on you two. Noah needs the experience and I need the help.”
April and Noah walked towards the bed. April started explaining things to Noah about coma victims. Anna looked in disgust, of all the things that could make this situation worse. A damned Robinson being Faye’s doctor, it was sickening.
April finished her explanation. “Miss Slater we’ll be back in later to check on her.”
“Thank you.” Anna closed the door. “Dammit…” She muttered.
--------------------
Laurie walked up to Austin’s dorm room and knocked. “Please be home… please be home.”
He opened the door. “Hey Laurie. Come in.”
Thank God. She walked into the dorm room. “Austin. I have something I need to say to you.”
--------------------
“Can I come and see you?”
“Why?”
“I just want to see you okay Kyle?”
“I don’t think it’s a good idea Claire…”
“Why not?”
“I just don’t think it’s a good idea.”
“You say that every time. I just want to see you that’s all.”
“Okay, okay fine.”
“Thank you.”
He hung up the phone. Another buzz came from the phone. “April line two.”
He picked up the phone. “Hey baby.”
“Hey. I was just calling to see if you were okay.”
“I’m fine.”
“Was that the new secretary?”
“No. She’s just here until I hire someone new.”
“Oh. Well I was just calling you to make sure you were okay.”
“Uh huh. Thanks.”
“I’ll see you later tonight for dinner, okay?”
“Yeah.”
“Okay bye. I love you.” She hung up the phone.
April was such a great girl. He didn’t deserve her…
“What do you want to talk about Laurie?”
“I haven’t been completely honest with you.”
“You haven’t?”
“Last night… when I kissed you. I knew what I was doing. Sure I was a little drunk but I knew what I was doing. I wanted to kiss you Austin. I want to right now. I know I said I’m fine with us just being friends. However, that’s not true. I’m attracted to you Austin. And who wouldn’t? You’re a great guy, cute, smart, nice. Everything in a guy that any girl looks for.”
“Laurie…” He tried to interrupt.
“I’m not stupid I know you like Mia. And who wouldn’t? She’s a great girl, cute, smart, nice. Damn both of your descriptions are the same… Anyway. I just wanted to tell you the complete truth and to let you know anytime you want to fall madly in love with me is fine by me. Oh and there’s this really great movie out, Pirates of the Caribbean and I really want to see it. It shows at noon. Will you come with me? I mean we both can afford to miss a class.”
“Uh… sure.”
“Okay great. I’m ready if you are.”
He had been so lost in her speech that he had missed how sexy she looked today. She was wearing a sleeveless black dress that had a semi low-neck line and brushed her knees. Black heels and a matching black purse. Her hair tucked behind her ears showing off her diamond earrings. Then he looked at himself. He was wearing a green teenage mutant ninja turtle shirt, blue jeans, and brown shoes. “Yeah I’m ready.”
They walked out of the door and headed towards the parking lot.
--------------------
“I’m going to go to the bathroom April.”
“Okay. Meet me in surgery room three.”
“Yeah, sure.” He walked into the elevator and pushed a number. The elevator dinged and he turned down the hallway. He opened the door to Faye’s room. “What do you want?” Anna said.
“I need to talk to you Anna, uh Miss Slater.”
“About what?”
“Look. I don’t like this anymore than you do. But I intend to be professional and give Faye the best care that I can give her. I know our families don’t exactly get along but I’m willing to put the feud on hold and look at Faye as any other patient and your family as any other family. The only thing I ask is I get the same respect back.”
Anna looked at Noah. “And just when I thought there wasn’t a decent Robinson. I never held anything against you personally. There was something different from you aside of your other family members. Okay you’ve got yourself a deal. I’ll let the rest of my family know. I assure you there won’t be any problems. I’ll see to it that way.”
“Shake on it?”
“Don’t press your luck.” Anna turned to her daughter. “If you’d excuse me I need to be with my daughter.”
He nodded. “Of course.” He walked out of the room.
“I guess he isn’t that bad Faye…”
--------------------
The movie had been playing for thirty minutes and not even Johnny Depp could keep her eyes of off Austin. She was glad it was dark and he couldn’t tell she was looking at him. Now’s a good of time as any she supposed. She had him trapped.
The movie had been playing for thirty minutes but he couldn’t stop staring at Laurie. He was glad it was dark. She looked so beautiful today. He didn’t want to take his eyes off of her. Probably just his hormones raging like any other young adult male. He began to think of Mia and her staying with him. He had wanted to climb up in bed with Mia last night and…
She quickly embraced him and kissed him. To her surprise he kissed her back this time…
