Portraying Heroes
“Thank you for your letter and print, entitled "I Promise", that pays tribute to the nursing profession in Toronto for their efforts during the SARS crisis. Public Health Division is iin the midst of making changes to its office space and once this is complete, a suitable locaton for the print will be found in the SARS unit.

As you may know an Expert Panel of SARS and Infectious Disease Control is meeting to recommend steps that Ontario must consider to strengthen the province's capacity to respond to future infectious disease outbreaks. As well, the government-elect plans to hire more nurses and create a better working environment for these hardworking professionals.

Thank you for your tribute to nurses and for drawing the portrait."

Yours truly,
Colin O. D'Cunha, Commissioner of Public Health, Chief Medical Officer of Health and Assistant Deputy Minister.

"I wanted to thank you for your kind thoughts about the nursing staff and their extraordinary effort made during the SARS crisis.

The print you forwarded is being framed for display at the Etobicoke Hospital Campus of William Osler Health Centre. Although all three Health Centre campuses took part in the battle against SARS, the Etobicoke campus was designated as one of the four SARS Alliance Hospitals in the GTA, to receive SARS patients.

Again, thank you for thinking of the nursing staff at the William Osler Health Centre."

Stephen P. Foreman, Vice President, Human Resources, William Osler Health Centre.

"Many thanks for sending us a copy of your portrait of Toronto nurses, which symbolizes so well their dedication, professionalism and strength of human spirit!
I will ask that it be framed and hung where our "post-SARS" team is located, as a reminder of how much their efforts are appreciated.

All the best,
Dr. Sheela V. Basur, Medical Officer of Health

"On behalf of The Scarborough Hospital, I want to thank you for the generous gift of your print. This tribute to our nursing staff during the SARS crisis is very much appreciated.

We acknowledged your gift at an Open Forum for staff last week and will be displaying it during our Nurses' Day celebrations at the end of October, after which a print will be hung in an appropriate location."

Yours truly,
Pat Clinch, Director, Organizational Development, The Scarborough Hospital.

"I am in receipt of the beautiful portrait of nurses in Toronto and on behalf of the staff of the VON Toronto-York Region Branch I want to thank you for your kind words of appreciation and for this piece of art work recognizing the work of nurses in this wonderful and diverse city of ours. I read your letter to our staff in my weekly broadcast message and have taken the portrait to be framed. It will hold a position of prominence in the office, likely just outside our boardroom. Your thoughtfulness will be long remembered by the staff of the VON Toronto-York Region Branch. Thank-you."

Diane McLeod, Interim Executive Director, Toronto-York Region Branch, VON

"I am writing to you on behalf of the Nurses at Toronto East General Hospital in appreciation of your donation of the very beautiful conceptualization of the Nurse during the SARS crisis. The portrait was presented to the Nurses at the Nursing Practice Council of TEGH. All participants agreed that the portrait should be displayed in the main entrance of the hospital at Coxwell Avenue.

"We are currently having the portrait framed and then will approach public relations to have the portrait placed in the lobby. ...
"Again thank you for this very meaningful donation. It will be a constant reminder of the crisis and the role that Nursing played."

Respectfully yours,
Irene Andress, RN, MN Director, Professional Practice,
Toronto East General Hospital
