There lived a maiden long ago
From Irelands' finest land..
that loved a man with all her heart.
Twas written in the sand.

Star-crossed lovers were they
She loved this Irish lad
He adored her eyes, her lips and more
Twas such a love they had.

Her hair was like fire in the night
Her eyes of greenest green
He swore she was an angel
The fairest he'd ever seen.

His hair was ashen dark with curls
His eyes black as coal
He rode a horse named Midnight
Whose beauty was that of gold.

He'd stole the heart of this lassie
Or so the story says
That she met him in a tavern
That reeked of ale and bread.

They sat alone at the same table
A candle twas the only light.
A beautiful couple so they were
Laughing into the night.

Then one night he never came
The candles' flame burned  low
She wondered where her lad could be
Or where it was he'd go?

She silently left the table
Weeping she walked outside
Out of nowhere came a carriage
The horses' racing astride.

The carriage rider shouted at her
Lassie move away!!
Then a horse quickly flew by him
like lightning in her way.

She stared and froze in horror
As the horse plunged their plight
The last sound was her screaming
Into the black of night.

The horseman jumped from the carriage
As the stray horse ran on by
He heard the poor lass moaning
He knew that she would die.

He knew the moment he saw her
The blood spiiled everywhere
He took her head into his hands
Her eyes froze in a stare.

Suddenly her lover came running
No words could he ever say
For the horse that killed his maiden
Was his own that ran away.

The maiden blinked for a moment
Then whispered to him and said,
"My love I'll never leave you."
With that the lass was dead.

Half a century has passed now
Her lover is dead and gone
But in the stillness of the night
This legend still lives on.

It's said if you travel though Ireland at night
On your way you may discover
A beautiful maiden with hair of fire
who's still searching for her lover.
