The Word Islam:

 Islam stands for the submission of oneself to God. This word could also be translated to "peace" [as it is related to the word "salaam", also meaning peace]. Islam is  the name of the religion that Muslims all over the world follow.

The Belief :

A Muslim believes in One Unique, Merciful, Forgiving, Beautiful, Eternal God-The Creator of all humankind.  Muslims around the world are united with the bond of brotherhood and the belief in One God and in all his messengers/prophets from the beginning of time.

Who are God's Messengers/Prophets?

Muslims believe that these people were messengers sent from God. Muslims believe that these people preached and taught humankind about the Oneness of God, He who has no partner, no son. This God is the same God of the Jews, the same God of the Christians, and of all humankind. Muslims believe in the messages of Moses and Jesus.  They believe that overtime the teachings of these people have been changed in the Jewish and Christian religion. 

The Bible, for example, has been written by many authors, written by many later people, and  translated through many languages. This is why there are so many different bibles today.  God sent the last messenger Muhammad (Peace be upon him) [who was illiterate] with the last revelation: the Qur'an.  The purpose for this was to clear out the mistakes in the Bible and the Torah. God promised that the Qur'an will be preserved in it's original form. (He said this when Prophet Muhammad first started receiving revelation). The  Qur'an was written and memorized by many people during the time of Prophet Muhammad. (The whole revelation took 23 years).  Now, The Qur'an is the most read book in the world.  Billions of people all around the world have memorized the Qur'an word for word, letter by letter. If one takes a Muslim in China and takes a Muslim in South America, regardless of the great physical distance and many other differences, they will both utter the same Qur'an; the Qur'an that was revealed to the Prophet (peace be upon him) 1400 years ago.

Where do Muslims come from? Are Muslims Arabs?

Muslims are NOT to be confused with Arabs
[ Out of ALL the Muslims in the world, only 20% of them are Arab. Also, not all Arabs are Muslim.]

Muslims can be Arab, Turkish, Persian, Indian, Chinese, Korean, Russian, German, African, Australian, American and any other nationality. 
In fact, Islam is the FASTEST growing religion in America
The Largest Muslim population lies in Asia.

The Media

Warning: In the Media: newspapers, TV shows, Movies, Commercials, Magazines, News, ETC....Muslims are attacked at every given opportunity.  They are portrayed as backward, terrible, selfish, terrorists.  One of the biggest misconceptions is that Muslim women are oppressed. THIS IS NOT TRUE!!!! Over 60% of converts are women. Do NOT turn to the media to learn about Islam.  A LOT of the Media may be factual but a lot is also somehow distorted by biased people.  In the end, the truth is often commuted into lies...
