Nota del traduttore
Ho sbobinato questo testo in inglese dalla videocassetta di una conferenza data da Richard Stallman nel dicembre 1997 al centro sociale Cox18 di Milano.
Stallman è l'ideatore del concetto del "free software" ovvero "software libero", e in essa lui spiega il perché e il come della sua etica e la messa in pratica di un modo di fare informatica senza sottomettersi alle pratiche repressivi del commercio.
Nei titoli iniziali della videocassetta, si dice:

Si è preferito mantenere la forma della traduzione simultanea e non la sottotitolazione, per riportare anche lo spirito di grande simpatia che si è creato tra Stallman e la numerosa platea.

ma, purtroppo, la traduzione simultanea, quando non coglie il senso inteso di Stallman, lo travisa del tutto.
Per riportare lo spirito del movimento del free software ai lettori italiani, ho preferito tradurre con cura e con calma il significato più o meno letterale delle parole di Stallman, lasciando una buona dose della maniera americana in cui gira le frasi.
Ho lasciato alcuni termini tecnici in quella specie di inglese italianizzato che si suole usare nell'informatica italiana. In particolare segnalo:

Copyright: Il concetto del diritto d'autore, e il sistema che ne applica le leggi.

Editor: Un programma per la modifica di archivi di testo puro senza indicatori di formattazione (corsivo, formato paragrafo ecc.).

Hardware: Tutte le parti di un computer con una forma materiale.

Software: Tutto la struttura di un computer che consiste soltanto in informazioni memorizzati, priva di una propria forma fisica.

Nel testo qui in inglese, ho conservato il peso dato a certe parole per far risaltare un certo senso, circondando di asterischi la parola in questione, *così*.
Ho tolto le frasi dette a metà, alcuni chiarimenti fra Stallman e il traduttore, alcuni commenti della platea ecc., per riportare il coerente discorso di Stallman. Ho lasciato le battute inutili...

Questo video raccoglie integralmente la conferenza di Richard Stallman, tenuta a Milano, l'1/12/1997, presso il cs Cox18, e organizzata dalla rivista Decoder.

Si è preferito mantenere la forma della traduzione simultanea e non la sottotitolazione, per riportare anche lo spirito di grande simpatia che si è creato tra Stallman e la numerosa platea.

La conferenza di Stallman comincia con il racconto di come, tra la fine degli anni Settanta e l'inizio degli anni Ottanta, la condivisione dei saperi e delle conoscenze sulla programmazione finì, anche nei templi dell'etica hacker, come il laboratorio di intelligenza artificiale del Massachussetts Institute of Technology, dove Stallman lavorava.

Tra i giovani ricercatori e gli studenti cominciò a prevalere l'egoismo... e questo cattivo esempio si diffuse purtroppo sempre di più...

His example inspired other people with weak consciences, who began hoarding information, instead of cooperating, for personal advantage

All of our shared software was written in PDP-10 assembler language. It was useless for any other kind of computer.

So at this point in the early 1980's we arrived at a situation where the only way to get a modern computer and use it was to start by signing a non-disclosure agreement for a proprietary operating system.

Well, it was clear that I would be totally unhappy living in that kind of world where cooperation is prohibited

So what was the alternative? One alternative was to leave the field of computers

The first software that any cooperating community needs is an operating system

because if you have applications and no operating system, you can't do anything. You can't even run the applications.

By making it compatible with Unix, we made a large community of people able easily to switch to the new system.

Well, once I had the design, the next thing I needed was the name,

So there was a hacker tradition that when you were writing a new program compatible with an existing program, you give it a name which says "this new program is not the other one".

So, for example, there were many editors, many more-or-less compatible editors called TECO.

So then, after I developed the first EMACS editor, there were many other EMACS editors, and most of them were called something-or-other-EMACS.

And I discovered that the word "GNU", which people are constantly using for jokes because its spelling is so crazy, that *that* would be a recursive acronym: "GNU's Not Unix".

It's a contraction, you know, GNU-apostrophe-S.

Yes, that's why it's three letters, by using a contraction. I could make a three-letter recursive acronym instead of a four-letter one.

You see, the dictionary says that the correct pronunciation of that word is "noo".

But why did this happen? Well, the original word was in an African language and it's pronounced something like n^oo. [Translator's note: The ^ sign indicates a kind of implosive sucking click made with the soft palate.]

n^oo. It has a click sound. But the British couldn't pronounce that.

So they could only say "noo".

But then they wrote it with the G to indicate that there was something they were leaving out.

And then the people who wrote the dictionaries, they were British too, so they put down the spelling G-N-U and they wrote that "noo" was the correct pronunciation.

So people are constantly making jokes about that word and there are funny songs about that word

So it was a very good choice for a funny name.

Well, now I had the name I could start the project.

My first idea was to ask for funding from computer manufacturers

So, actually, some executives were interested initially, but they never followed up on it.

So I decided that I would simply start writing the programs myself.

Anyway, so I started that in September, and in early 1985 it was beginning to be usable.

In English, of course, it doesn't sound like a tautology because the word "free" has these two meanings.

So free software may be gratuito and it may not be in other times.

For example, if you get a copy over the network then you're not paying.

and this is not a bad thing because the important thing is the freedom.

Free software means that once you have a copy you have the freedom to use it in a cooperating and ethical way.

Specifically, a program is free software for you if you have three particular freedoms that I will now explain.

Level One freedom is the freedom to help yourself.

Specifically, the freedom to make changes so that the program will do what you need.

This is what we couldn't do with the Xerox laserprinter software.

And if you don't have this freedom, that causes you practical trouble

But along with this practical problem there is a psycho-social problem

which is that people become discouraged and demoralised

because if you are excited about your work and you want to get a lot of work done

and then you get to work and you find out that it's hard to do things because somebody is deliberately making it hard

you're going to start thinking differently. You're going to think "Well, they're paying me by the hour and I don't care if I just have to wait here. That's *their* money that they're wasting".

So, for those of us who enjoy being excited about getting work done, that's a very unhappy thing.

The second level of freedom is the freedom to help your neighbour

by redistributing the software.

If you can't do this, you can't live an ethical life because you can't be friends with other people who use computers.

Now, it takes the same amount of work to make the program if you have a thousand users or a million users. It's the same work.

So if, instead of a million users, there are only a thousand who are willing to pay the money

If the government says that you can't help your friend

When I was a little child and I started going to school, the teachers told us "If you bring candy you have to share it with other people".

And now the U.S. goverment has a proposal that children should be taught not to share software.

For example, there were people who said that if the government told everybody what to do then they would work together and it wouldn't depend on individual good will.

But this didn't work.

And there are other people who believe that if everybody is selfish and greedy,

they will be forced to help each other in order to get things from each other

and supposedly the invisible hand will make everything function.

If you've ever met somebody who will never help you unless he hears "what's in it for him", you know that this doesn't work.

So this good will that proprietary software is attacking is crucial to our society.

The third level of freedom is the freedom to help build your community

by improving a program and publishing the improved versions so that other people can benefit from your work

This is very important in practice because it helps us get better software.

When a free program becomes popular, sometimes you get people sending you many improvements every day.

This never happens to Microsoft.

The point is that nobody has the source code for MicroSoft software

so they *can't* make improvements.

And besides, if they *did* make improvements, why give them back to Microsoft? Microsoft isn't anybody's friend.

I should explain, though, that I'm using Microsoft as one example of many, many companies that all do the same thing.

Many people think of Microsoft as the special enemy, and other companies as somehow better.

But in fact most software companies treat you exactly the same way Microsoft treats you. They give you no freedom.

Microsoft has been more successful at subjugating people than the other companies

but that's not because the other companies aren't trying to do the same thing, they just haven't succeeded as much.

Sometimes a free program gets so many improvements sent in by other people that the original author can barely keep up with the contributions,

so maybe the original author has no time to write improvements himself because he's busy merging in the tons of improvements that other people are doing.

It's a very nice problem to have.

Now, if you are not allowed to build your community, of course the community suffers in a practical sense

but together with that is a psycho-social harm

because the spirit of scientific cooperation is undermined:

the idea that we are all working together to advance humanity's knowledge.
