Solar loops spring into view
Huge loops of very hot gas rising above the Sun's surface vibrate with
enormous energy at times of solar storms. This is the latest surprise from
ESA's flotilla of spacecraft - SOHO, Ulysses and the four Cluster
satellites - with which scientists are trying to make sense of how
disturbances on the Sun affect the Earth.

Fellowships for PhD Students in Solar System Physics
The "International Max Planck Research School on Physical Processes in the Solar System and Beyond" at
the Max Planck Institute for Aeronomy in Katlenburg-Lindau, and the Universities of Braunschweig and Goettingen,
Germany, offers excellent research possibilities for students to obtain a PhD degree in a 3-years graduate program.
The program covers the full range of physics inherent in the field of solar system science from geophysics
and planetary physics to solar physics as well as the underlying fundamental physics. The science program
is complemented by training in computational physics, space technology and project management.
High-profile space missions, outstanding projects for ground- based instruments and data analysis, as well
as theoretical and extensive numerical modeling provide a wide range of research possibilities for PhD students.
A prerequisite is a diploma or a master of science degree in physics.
The next PhD program will start on 1 January 2003, review of application begins on 1 July 2002. Successful
applicants will receive adequate financial support.
For details about the Research School and the application material visit http://www.solar-system-school.de
or email to info@solar-system-school.de

Postdoc Positions in Solar Physics and Astrophysics
2001-10-03
The Max Planck Institute for Aeronomy (MPAe) in Katlenburg-Lindau, Germany invites young scientists interested in
solar physics and astrophysical research to apply for one of several postdoc positions in the solar physics group
of the institute. The MPAe is one of Europe's leading institutes in solar system research. It is involved in many
international ground-based and space-borne projects related to the investigation of the Sun, interplanetary space,
and the planets (see also the institute's homepage at \link{www.linmpi.mpg.de}). Within the Solar Physics group,
led by Prof. S. Solanki, the major research activities are directed towards:
* MHD simulations of the Sun's convection zone spectroscopic and polarimetric observations of the Sun's
photosphere chromosphere and corona from EUV to infrared wavelengths,
* the role of plasma physical processes and of the solar magnetic field in the chromosphere, corona and heliosphere
* the influence of solar variability on the Earth's climate and on its magnetosphere and ionosphere system,
* stellar magnetism and activity.
We seek young scientists interested in these or related areas of solar physics or related astrophysics. According
to the preferences of the candidate, research in theory, experiments, or in data analysis is possible.
The positions are available from 1st January 2002 or later until filled. Applicants should have a PhD in physics
or astronomy/astrophysics. The positions are offered for a period of two years and may be extended by a further
year. For an application you should include your CV, a list of publications and the names of two scientists who
could provide a letter of recommendation. We would also like to have a description of your research experience
and of projects which you would like to persue.
Applications should be sent to (E-mail applications are welcome):

Post Doctoral Tenure-track Positions (Spain)
2001-06-04
Post-doctoral tenure-track positions in the framework of the "Ramón y Cajal Program" of the Ministerio de Ciencia
y Tecnología of Spain are available.
The Centro de Astrobiología (CAB) invites applications by qualified candidates for 5 year tenure-track positions
in Astrobiology. These 34 positions are new and the successful candidates will have to join CAB from the late Fall
of 2001 to early Winter of 2002. The positions are at the Centro de Astrobiología, in its brand new facility in the
Campus of INTA, Torrejón de Ardoz, Madrid, and will be granted together with some seed money to allow beginning of
research activities immediately upon filling the position. These positions are part of the "Ramón y Cajal Program"
of the Ministry of Science and Technology of Spain www.mcyt.es/cajal/default.htm.
We are looking for enthusiastic persons with postdoctoral experience, highly motivated and interested in working
within a multidisciplinary scientific environment. Successful candidates will be expected to engage in existing
research programs as well as in new collaborative research carried out at the Center and within the framework of
our association to the NASA Astrobiology Institute of which the CAB is, at present, the only international
Associate Member.
The areas of specialization of the applicant include the following: Astronomy and Astrophysics, Planetary Geology
and Earth Sciences, Physical Chemistry and Cosmogeochemistry, Molecular Evolution, Genomics and Proteomics,
Paleobiology, Extremophiles, Complexity and Non-linear Science, Numerical Simulation and Supercomputation,
Robotics and Advanced Internet Communications, and Instrumentation for Astrobiology.
Details about the "Ramon y Cajal Program" at Centro de Astrobiología are available at www.cab.inta.es/.
Those interested are invited to contact the CAB by e-mail at ryc.cab@inta.es, telephone (34-91-520-1111)
or fax (34-91-520-1621). The deadline for presentation of application materials at CAB is June 15th, 2001,
and at the Ministry of Science and Technology June 23rd, 2001. Both steps are mandatory.
