Amiri Baraka è nato a Newark, nel New Jersey, nel 1934. Il suo nome di battesimo è Everett LeRoi Jones. E' il primo a pubblicare le opere di Allen Ginsberg e Jack Kerouac negli anni '50. Tra le sue opere, Preface to a Twenty-Volume Suicide Note (1961), Police e Arm Yrself or Harm Yrself (1967, due pièce contro le violenze della polizia), Home of the range (1968, altra pièce scritta a beneficio del Black Panther Party. Nel '68 diventa musulmano e cambia il proprio nome in Imamu Amiri Baraka (toglierà il primo nome nel '74, dopo aver abbracciato il marxismo leninismo). Tra le sue opere più recenti: Confirmation: An Anthology of African-American Women (1983, pubblicato con la moglie Amina Baraka), The Music: Reflections on Jazz and Blues (1987).
