Referee Melinda Rutter blowing her hooter to start the first heat of 'Pop the Cork'.
The 'Pop the Cork' final about to begin. After a titanic struggle, Springwood (Qld.) won with their Joker to pick up eight points, their only points for the night.
Portland skipper and stalwart Ross Murrell holds his squirting champagne bottle aloft as the winner of the first heat of 'Dancing Dummies'. Each of the competitors was strapped to a blow-up dancing partner. Back-hoe operator Andrew Sloan of South Australia went on to win the event final, with Murrell finishing a close second.
On an evening dominated by bottles (see above), 'Hang the Bottle' was the final event, in which competitors formed towers of blocks with a magnetised bottles at the top to attach onto suspended magnets, after navigating their way over hay-bales. An all-time great event that got the adrenaline pumping (even though these grown men were dressed with nappies, bibs and dummies). As you can see, the event was very close and difficult (and potentially dangerous). In later series an 'E' block was added just to make it that much harder!
Frankston bursts onto the scene as the all-time worst ever team (well technically they weren't the lowest ever scoring team, that honour went to Woodville (S.A.), but Frankston was Victorian and that was embarassing enough).
Frank "ston" Gleeson, Frankston captain promptly blows their Joker in 'The Great Ski Race', in which Victoria finished ____. (Fill in the gaps).
Mark Warren blows the hooter to start Heat 1 of 'Skyburst'. Competition: where is the referee's right hand?
Competition: do you know who this is popping the baloons for Victoria here in 'Skyburst'? (We do, but do you?).
Portland's Roger Trewavis competing in 'Space Race'. Finishing in a respectable 40 seconds, he was overshadowed by Burra's Steve Borgas, who finished in an amazing 31 seconds (see Gallery Page 3).
