I think, though, that this is merely an attempt to hide the truth, which is truly shattering. I don't think I can bring myself to type it... Suffice it to say that, Don McLean is an exact anagram of "damn clone"! Which all goes to prove that AP is completely meaningless! |
For over thirty years, people have laboured to discover the "one true meaning" of American Pie. For just as long, Don McLean has refused point-blank to give any explanation! Sure, Don could just be being deliberately evasive and infuriating, but I think the only reason why he won't tell is they were just a bunch of rhymes in the first place. My evidence: the song obviously means so little to Don that he can't even readily recall the lyrics that the rest have the world have spent thirty years mulling over! For in the PBS Starry Starry Night video (2000), Don gives a rare "insight" into American Pie, yet clearly demonstrates his own poor grasp of the lyrics. He begins to talk of the song's "dream format", and gives the following example: "... so it's perfectly okay for me to talk about being in the gym and seeing this girl dancing with somebody else and then suddenly having that become this.. this.. [pause]... other thing that that verse becomes!" See? No wonder the poor guy can't offer any explanation for the lyrics: he struggles to even remember them! So much for them being laden with deep meaning. One mystery remains. How does Don manage to recall the lyrics to sing in every concert as he has done for thirty or more years? One obvious theory is that his brain goes on autopilot, and sings them without thinking, the way one drives a car, breathes, etc. However, a second and more sinister theory exists" Don McLean has an evil twin! This would indeed explain much. It might be either the man in the video, the one who recalls the lyrics at concerts, or the evil joker who keeps everyone guessing about the meaning of AP.
