This was a made for TV movie, of the Tales From The Darkside and Creepshow variety. Three horror stories are presented by a ghoulish morgue attendant (Carpenter in deliciously over the top form), similar to the Cyptkeeper from Tales From The Crypt.
The first segment (Gas Station) is a tense serial killer thriller, set in a petrol station in the middle of the night. Carpenter keeps the suspense running, quite similar in style to Halloween. A few well known Carpenter faces, and directors turn up to add to the fun. In fact, the whole movie is littered with cameos from horror directors and members of Carpenters usual entourage.
Hair stars Stacy Keach and Sheena Easton. This is a rioutously funny satire on the lengths people will go to cover their baldness. Very good story with a wicked punchline.
The third segment, Eye, was directed by Tobe Hooper (IMDB) of Texas Chainsaw Massacre fame. It is one of the best things he has done in years, managing to be genuinely scary, in spite of the complete unoriginality of the plot. Its basically a rehash of the Hands Of Orlac theme, but done with great style and pace. Mark Hammil also puts in a good performance as the central character.
Bodybags is a great little movie, especially for fans of the Tales From The Crypt type presentations. Carpenter has recently been quoted in on-line interviews as saying he is negotiating to make some more Bodybags episodes. I hope these come off as Carpenter seems to enjoy the sheer irreverence of the whole thing, making a very enjoyable (and scary) film.
