The extra footage in the special edition is 'mi-T fine'. You see the crime Plissken and his partner were commiting that sent them to NY in the first place. Also John Carpenter had a lot of neat things to say about it at the beginning of the tape.
Snake Plissken is name after a friend of a friend who actually had a snake tatoo on his chest.
In the scene where Snake is landing the glider, and looking at the 3D computer screen of the buildings, no computer animation was used, 'cause at the time the technology was too expensive (EFNY was made for a small $7 million). So they built small models of the buildings outlined with fluorescent tape instead. John was laughing that somebody could easily do these effects from their home now.
Only the Statue Of Liberty shot in the beginning was actually filmed in New York, the rest was in St. Louis. There was still a big mess on the streets when shooting was over and the studio was billed a pretty penny to have it cleaned up.
