John Carpenter News Up To August 1997

The most recent news is at the top of the page....

Do you have any John Carpenter news? Whatever it is (JC news, video releases, sightings, actors JC has worked with, etc.) please send it to : Marc Bright (msbright@iee.org)
All quotes and info from other sources are in Italics, all other text is my own reflection on the news.

News as of Aug 28th Corona Films Cleanup - As reported in the Films Of John Carpenter page there is a message from RezivoirDg commenting on errors in the Corona Vampires page, even though they are similar to mine. Well, after conversing with Rez.. he has kindly filled me in. The Corona site discusses characters from the book without making it clear that these are not the same in the film, it gives the impression it has a complete character list for the film, when it is in fact for the book.
Would the real John Carpenter please stand up? For some time I have been confused by the continous cropping up of JC's name in acting roles, such as The Boy Who Could Fly and I Killed Will Bill Hickock. At first I thought these might be cameos, but then dismissed them as mistakes in film listings. Well, I suppose the answer was obvious, there is a John Carpenter actor, to see his biography click here. This explains the strange films that keep cropping up in the Internet Movie Database listing for the JC we know. Note : the same site lists the actor as being active until 1988, but, it lists the JC we know as being active until 1996! Has anyone told JC he is no longer active? Better stop working on that vampires movie I suppose.

News as of Aug 26th Round and Round Myers goes - That Halloween 7 rumour keeps cropping up everywhere, here is a recent piece of news I recieved that has a slightly different angle According to a feature article in today's USA TODAY about Mirimax Films, the company still has a 20th anniversary edition of Halloween in the works with Jamie Lee Curtis slated to star! Sadly, there was no mention of J.C., but if other rumors are true, JLC wouldn't do the project without Carpenter's participation. Lets hope for the best.... Thanks to Chris for the info. Pat from the Films Of John Carpenter page points out that this rumour may stem from some confusion over a possible re-release of Halloween as a 20th anniversary thing.
Wot spellin misstaks? It has been pointed out to me that in the script the head Vampire is listed as Valek, not Valick.

News as of Aug 22nd Vampires - Action! Some little snippets about the Vampires script have dropped into my mailbox, from an unidentifiable though extremely cool source "I just finished reading the script (First Draft, March 17, 1997 by Don Jakoby, Dan Mazur, John Carpenter) and while this version does seem to be lacking much in anything but action and gore, it looks like it should be a damn fun Carpenter film." So, the other comments we had about Jacoby's original script centering on action seem to hold true for JCs re-writes as well. I don't really think this is a problem, Vampires is an extremely visceral novel that does have some deeper elements. Ok, so the deeper elements may have been ditched, but as the source says, this should still be a great JC film. Also, notice the name Dan Mazur? Not credited as a writer in any previous information I have. Here is a link to his IMDB page (assuming it is the same guy), his only previous credit there is Night Of The Scarecrow. Anyone have any information on that film?

News as of Aug 19th Late Addition : Thing II gossip - This is a bit of stuff I recieved through e-mail, a crew member of Vampires has commented on something they saw on my page, about a hoped for sequel to The Thing. Now, this person says "this will never happen", because "of a few things Carpenter said" and the general impression they got from him. So there it is, not conclusive, a bit vague, but I had to share it. As an aside, there is a Thing II script written by a fan of the original, Gary Piazza. He is trying to get it to JC for viewing, have a look at it here. (It's a compressed Zip File)
Who's the Man? Myers! Ok, I am putting this tangential piece of news up because it interests me. This is from the Dark Horizons newsite, After years of speculation, production is moving ahead on the clash between the horror genre's greatest titans, the "Jason Vs Freddy" flick.. 'Variety' reports that FX whiz Rob Bottin has signed on to direct the film for New Line Cinema. "Rather than revisit old territory," Bottin said, "my intention is to celebrate these characters by way of re-invention -- elevating them both to a completely new level of horror, using state-of-the-art techniques. They will be reborn in a bigger-than-life way". He's not actually writing a script, but has provided a scene-by-scene breakdown of the film's action and special FX. That is the same Rob Bottin who dreamt up those fantastic alien scenes for The Thing, and if that doesn't tie it in with JC enough : Various other villains may make cameos in the upcoming 'Freddy vs. Jason' movie, with the most likely cameo being Halloween's Michael Myers; This sounds like being one great big dumb movie, fantastic stuff. It sounds like one of those daft conversations we all had as kids, "Do you reckon The Hulk could beat up Superman?".

News as of Aug 15th A rebuttal (of sorts) Today is a good day for news. No sooner do I have the scoop on Vampires but someone who knows John Steakley kindly gets in touch with me (a big thanks for this info to JB). My interpretations of RezivorDg's comments on cast members and script details were premature. Sheryl Lee's character is not based on Davette and the script is pretty different to the movie : >>John Carpenter is filming "Vampire$" this summer, but he changed the script.. John S. doesn't understand why they changed the story up so much, if they were willing to pay him so well for his story, but shut up and took the money anyway . . they wrote out "Davette Shands"...<< Hmm, so, we are all still pretty much in the dark on script details.
Vampires - the man in black interview : Ok, this is a big one. I have been extremely lucky to have some hot info on Vampires dropped into my mailbox by the man in the funky black and white suit, RezivoirDg. We chewed the fat about Madonna's Like A Virgin then went on to discuss the movie (as is usual on this page quotes from the source are in italics - everything else is me)-
How closely is JC following the source novel?no i havent read the novel, but i will tell you that the team crow... OK, sorry folks, this bit is censored so as not to spoil the movie for those that havn't read the book. Suffice to say that the info I was divulged follows some pretty big parts of the book, some very important plot points.
What is the budget? I'll tell you this, its not BIG budget but it will be a cool flick
What are the roles of each cast member?Sheryl Lee=Katrina
Thomas Ian Grifith=Valick head vampire
Tim Ginniuie=Father Adam From the Vatican, same name as the novel character.
Mark Boon=Katlin (slayer) Possibly - Jack Crow's sidekick Cat, a funny guy in the novel, always ready with a quip.
Cary Tagawa=slayer Deyo
Henry Kinji=slayer Anthony
James Woods=Jack Crow
Daniel baldwin= Tony Montoya...but is always called montoya
Hmm, I think the Montoya character is the gunslinger known as Felix in the novel. I did have an e-mail suggesting that Baldwin was going to play Felix, well done Joseph Amenta. The slayer's are the members of Jack Crow's vampire slaying team.
What was it like working with JC? As for working with john, i found it to be one of the most incredibl.e experiences of my life, he was incredible...funny, pleasant to work with...but at the same time, i kept my distance.
What scenes did you see them filming? I witnessed about half of the actual filming....the slayers killing vamps, slayers getting killed, valick flying.....blowing up a motel....slayers dying...etc\
I have heard that Jacoby either wrote the first draft, how much did JC re-write the script? I dunno about that jacoby guy, i thought JC did the whole thing...
We have heard rumours (that have never been confirmed) of JC's ill health, how did he seem? John is fine, as far as i know...he never seemed to be in any unhealthy condition...the guy is no mr. universe but i wouldnt say that he is dying or anything. I thought so, still plenty of time for that Thing sequel then!
What do you think of the film? I think this film is going to be really cool...some great makeup effects and it seems like a lot of action, as for how scary it will be, hey this is JOHN CARPENTER...what i saw wasnt scary, only because i knew it was all coming, but from my experience on the set, i cant wait to see the final product.
We would have spoken some more but the cops came round the corner and our man left with guns blazing.

News as of Aug 14th Jackie Brown has no Carpenter : To try and cfind out exactly what is going on with JC & QT I got in touch with David Chute, the unit publicist for Jackie Brown, and asked him if JC had filmed a cameo, this was his reply : Not true. No cameos to speak of in "Jackie Brown," as the film version of "Rum Punch" is called. I thought this rumour was a bit iffy as JC was reported to have filmed the cameo last October, which means that Jackie Brown would have had an incredibly long shoot. Still, it should be a great film anyway, but seeing JC in it would have been brilliant. It is no secret that QT is a fan of JC, just check out the reference to AOP13 in From Dusk Till Dawn.
Vampires release date : Yes, even more Vampires news! Geekmania reports that the release date of Vampires is Feb 27th 1998, that is for the US. Us third-world citizens will probably have a few more months to wait. The US date looks like it could clash with the release of BLADE, which I have been informed is also a Vampire movie. A garlic thanks to Mohammad Khan for this info.

News as of Aug 12th Carpenter and Tarantino? Dave has kindly answered my plea for info on the supposed cameo that JC filmed in Quentin Tarantino's new movie Rum Punch : I'm positive he filmed it. We had it reported to the Tarantino newsgroup quite a while ago, but who knows whether you can trust anything off the internet. Hopefully it'll be true. So, not exactly a confirmation, but at least another source of the information.

News as of Aug 11th Halloween 7? Previous rumours had removal men taking stuff out of the original Halloween houses and putting them into storage, perhaps in readiness for JC and JLC to film Halloween 7? Well Bruce Dierbeck of the excellent Haddonfield On-Line page has recently visited these houses : while I said at first that I was not visiting the HALLOWEEN sites, I lied. I was out in Hollywood and decided to stop by them once again. This time, during the day. These are four shots of the Doyle House and Wallace house. Take notice at how they have changed the colors and the patio door on the second floor is gone! To that guy who tried telling us that they were clearing out the house, he was wrong. There is no filming going on, they are just trimming the trees along the whole road, so it's very cluttered. No filming. So, another piece of the JC and Halloween 7 jigsaw falls apart.
Dark Star a success (again). Dark Star was re-released on VHS in the UK this month and is currently at numer 8 in the video charts. This is a huge sucess for a low budget cult movie, no doubt helped by the blanket rave reviews it has had in the UK press.

News as of Aug 8th Big Trouble sequel? The Films Of John Carpenter has some interesting news on a possible sequel to Big Trouble... Alert spy ARGOS has mailed me with this, umm, interesting little rumor: I'm not too sure whether this is old or new but....(I think I read this in Variety, an article about movies making transition to t.v. in terms of made for television sequals or just plain syndication (like a t.v. show, SE7EN))...anyhow, they mentioned a sequal to "Big Trouble in Little China" called "More Trouble in Little China", kind of sick huh? Just thought you and the crew would like to know. Hmm, I remember this rumour from a while back. A few people contacted me who had read the script, it was pretty lame and never reached production. Maybe it is back on track.
Thing Laserdisc Special ED? A friendly spy I will call MONO has reported on that pesky The Thing laserdisc release that we lasernuts have been dying to get our hands on: I don't have any confirmed information as to a date, but I have been told that work is continuing and is almost complete. I expect to hear about a release date early in September for a release around November. Again, this is not an official announcement. Thanks, MONO, life for your crop. By the way, in case you're wondering why I keep bringing up the Thing laserdisc, let me tell you what is supposed to be on it (I make no guarantees): A new, original documentary about the making of the film, running commentary with Kurt Russell and Carpenter, among other cool stuff. I can't wait! : The Films Of John Carpenter

News as of Aug 7th Jacoby Screenwriter? An interesting bit of info dropped into my mailbox this morning concerning the Vampires script (thanks Jay) : I read the original treatment of VAMPIRE$ - I believe by Jakoby but I'm not 100% sure (it was over a year ago). Having been a HUGE fan of the book I was very excited - unfortunately, the screenplay did not live up to my expectations. In any case, he ended up watering it down and weeding out a lot of the best, angst-ridden stuff and turned it into a pretty straight forward action movie. Then I found out that John Carpenter would be re-writing it and I have hope again. Unfortunately the only clips we have seen for Vampires are of the action sequences, so we have no idea of how much JC rewrote.
E! Interviews Ryan has kindly informed me that E! Tonight usually repeat a lot of their stuff : I'm a devoted E! watcher and I find that usually during the weekend editions of E! New daily (for the weekend it's E! News week in review) they rehash some of the stories they played during the week. I cannot guarantee this but maybe you should check it out. The first airing I believe is Friday night. So again, keep an eye out and a tape ready for those interviews.
Vampires production company? Well, the IMDB say it is Storm King Productions while the Corona new films site say it is Spooky Tooth Productions (thanks to The Films Of John Carpenter page for pointing out the Corona information).

News as of Aug 5th John Carpenter the poet? OK, wierd stuff. A while back I mentioned a book called Report From the Besieged City and Other Poems (1985) which TV guide attributed to old JC himself (the original TV Guide article), erroneously it seems. You see, there is a poem available here that was translated by a John Carpenter to be included in a volume titled Report From The Besieged City. Now I know JC is pretty eclectic but I think that the TV GUIDE have got this guy mixed up with JC the director. Wierd mistake to make, BUT I could be wrong, anyone else know the real story?
Do you want Snake's Gun? Courtesy of the Snake Plissken page : Now available, Snake's MAC-10--the sub-machine gun assigned by Commissioner Hauk at the beginning of EFNY. It's a functioning replica with silencer and strap, produced by Empire Kollectables, only 350 bucks. Contact them at (914)496-2817.
Dark Star Special Ed? I have heard rumours of a special edition of Dark Star, supposedly re-edited by Dan O'Bannon (the co-writer, Pinback) to remove the extra 30 minutes that turned the film from a small college movie into feature length. Does anyone have any info on this? This is a little snippet from Usenet : "Special Edition" and its shorter and CUT. The Special Edition had the extra footage moved to the end of the movie. It also has some discussion with Carpenter I believe. but, to contradict this : That's odd....the version I saw was widescreened AND contained a few little scenes I hadn't seen before, most notably the scene where the captiain guy (can never remember his name) plays that instrument of glass beakers, which WASN'T in the original that I remember. I need more info on this, please. Whoah, hot off the Press, Patrick Kerr informs me that Special Ed has 30mins removed and put on the end, with no JC interview. It is no longer available in the US. Thanks for clearing that one up Patrick, he of the Films Of John Carpenter page (I managed to drop the link in there somewhere)
Vampires News The E! interviews featuring JC, Woods, Baldwin etc. aired yesterday on August 4th. Did anyone catch them? Please, get in touch with me and give me a full run down if you have. Bruce Dierbeck has kindly got in touch with me about these interviews - Just wanted to say THANKS for posting the info about the interviews with E! with the cast of JC's VAMPIRES. But, sorry to be late, but those interviews aired TODAY! I just got done channel surfing and saw James Woods so I stopped. It turned out to be clips and interviews with the newest Carpenter flick. I'm sorry I can't really explain much cuz I was just so SHOCKED that they showed clips already. Basically they consisted of James Woods and Daniel Baldwin kicking some ass and firing some cool ass guns. Woods looks cool as a Vampire Hunter. They got a few words from Woods, Baldwin, and Carpenter. Carpenter just basically said it took a while for him to accept the fact that people saw him as a Horror director. Baldwin was talking about how this is a different Vampire movie and that he had to act differently than he had expected for the role. They said the movie will come out early next year. I've heard February some time as a releae date. BLADE, a Vampire movie based on a comic book, is coming out February 13th. So, I'd hope they try to release it BEFORE then. Remember when two Volcano movies came out -- Dante's Peak came out before Volcano, and it made more money than Volcano. So, hopefully JC's VAMPIRES will come out before and make more money than BLADE. Hmm, interesting stuff about the dates clash. Has anyone got any more info on these interviews?
Video and laserdisc releases : As I am not a USA citizen I am usually behind on these things, this one is from the Haddonfield On-line News Section I have both versions of the new Anchor Bay release of Halloween. I have several pictures from this new version including pics of the front and back cover box. All the pitures and info are in the seperate Anchor Bay section and in my news and updates. The URL for the pics from the new version is http://www.oocities.org/~jeff_davis Just follow the links to the Halloween page with the Anchor Bay Page : Just wanted to let you know I have the first copy of the new LBTX Halloween from Anchor Bay. It is fantastic. The color of the print is so vivid it has to be seen. Theatrical trailer is included. No Tv scenes!!!! The box is the original poster. From the Films Of John Carpenter page : Escape From L.A. Sale Video Release: This tidbit was delivered by whoever it is that delivers my sunday paper. As of Tuesday, August 5, Escape From L.A. is available for sale on videocassette (as opposed to being available for rental only, which it has been since January). I don't know about elsewhere, but at my local SuperStore (for music, movies, appliances, small tactical nukes, etc.) it's sale price is only $7.99. That's a good price, folks. Take advantage of it! and Attention laserdisc nuts out there (I am one of you): just thought I'd remind you that there is a new disc of Village of the Damned coming out on August 20th that has DTS encoding. (For you non-laser people, that's a kind of surround sound.) Otherwise, no difference between this new one and the disc released, gosh, almost two years ago now? So if you are DTS capable, great.
Halloween 7 Screenplay : Hey, put your teeth back in, THIS IS NOT THE OFFICIAL SCRIPT. Justin Morris, an aspiring screenwriter, is trying to get his script for Halloween 7 into production. He has it on-line and has dropped me an e-mail asking me to publicise it, so here it is : http://www.oocities.org/Hollywood/Set/9334/ so go and read it and tell him what you think.
ps. sorry about the huge length of News today, it never rains but it pours.

News as of Aug 2nd Vampires news The following is an edit of some info sent to me by Raptor (cheers) - ... interviews of John Carpenter, James Woods, Sheryl Lee and Daniel Baldwin for E! TV. The wrap date will definitely be Monday the 4th of August and Carpenter plans to start post-production the week of the 11th. ...filming of four critical scenes in which Team Crow is confronted by the head Vampire in their hotel after they just cleaned out a nest of vampires. Daniel Baldwin is a member of Team Crow; however I have not read the book or script so I do not know who he is supposed to be, but he is a good guy. Sheryl Lee is indeed a prostitute in this movie ... you are missing one very important name in your cast list. Thomas Ian Griffith who plays the head Vampire Valick who was the original Vampire created from an excorsism gone bad. Also Tim Guinee plays a priest that is always getting pushed around by James Woods caracter, and used as bait to lure the Vampires out from their den. All of that stuff sounds fantastic, thank you again Raptor. Everyone keep their eyes peeled and VCRs ready for those E! TV interviews.
Halloween 7 Those in the know (the mysterious they) have dropped me a few lines of encouragement that back up my Halloween 7 news, one source said ... that is pretty much what is going on ....

News as of July 29th Halloween 7 rumour - It seems that Dark Horizons is on the ball again with this scoop (c'mon Harry Knowles, don't you like Horror movies or something?), which has come to me via the Films Of John Carpenter page : Dark Horizons's news page has reported that a new script for Halloween 7 is being drafted for Mirimax that involves neither the original characters from the first two films nor the characters from all the other sequels, but a new set of characters to hang around for the "final" (supposedly) movie about Michael Myers. The dropping of the Williamson (kevin, the writer of Scream) idea was due chiefly to Jamie Lee Curtis' lack of interest and Carpenter's too-high price tag, not to mention the current legal battle between Mirimax and the Akkads, the original owners of the rights to the series who want it back. Too bad, if you ask me. But, I guess my opinion don't count for Shinola, so there you have it...
Bruce Dierbeck has kindly got in touch with me about the JC and Martian Chronicles rumour. Apparently this was JCs film before he signed on to do Vampire$, BUT, I think that maybe this title has got confused with Mutant Chronicles which JC had signed on to.

News as of July 28th The Dark Horizons Vampires site has a US release date for Vampires : February 1998. Not exactly summer blockbuster or winter sleeper time, but, does the date really matter?
A rumour from the Films Of John Carpenter (a new page) : This one concerns the slightly dubious Halloween 7 rumour - Well, the rumors are flying. Apparently (and many people are reporting this) Carpenter and Jamie Lee Curtis have signed on to do HALLOWEEN 7!! But get this... they are ignoring all of the sequels past II and are taking the series where Carpenter has envisioned it should go. God, I hope this is true. One recent rumor has the original houses from the first two movies being cleared out and their current occupant's belongings being put into storage... The implications are staggering. I am salivating!!! Who-boy! Okay, I'm under control. Let's just wait it out.
For more info on this check out the excellent Haddonfield Online's news section. This is the article from Entertainment weekly : GHOUL HARDY: How does an unkillable masked maniac celebrate his birthday? As far as Miramax is concerned, by going on a bloodletting bender. The studio has enlisted SCREAM screenwriter Kevin Williamson to pen a new chapter in the HALLOWEEN franchise in time for the 20th anniversary of director John Carpenter's 1978 slasher classic. [a note from Bruce: this is kinda wrong, he's NOT writing the screenplay, just the treatment]. "Part of my deal with the studio was to write a seven page treatment for a new installment," says Williamson. Though he already has a few good ideas, the assignment would be simpler if "we could just forget the last four [sequels]," he says of the dismal follow-ups that left the franchise "a real dead dog." Williamson admits getting the old gang together will be tough. "I talked to Jamie Lee Curtis. She said she'd be interested if Carpenter directed, and Carpenter said it would have to be a GREAT story. So that's what I have to do." --Chris Nashawaty of Entertainment Weekly. Page 13. August 1, 1997 issue.
This is some old news from Corona, it preceeds the new developments outlined above but it gives a bit of info on the treatment Kevin Williamson made for Halloween 7 : Scream write Kevin Williamson has indeed handed in a short treatment to Miramax honchos Harvey and Bob Weinstein. Williamson's 7-page proposal is a direct sequel to Halloween 2, and completely ignores the events from all subsequent sequels after this one. Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) is again the protagonist, and Sam Loomis really did die in that explosion, but Michael Myers did not. Apparently, both John Carpenter and Jamie Lee Curtis were both approached about the project, which confirmed rumors we heard earlier. Curtis didn't even consider the idea and Carpenter asked for an astronomical figure to direct. Needless to say, it looks like Williamson's story will not be used. In addition to the creative sinkhole the project is in, the owners of the Halloween franchise, Moustapha and Malek Akkad, are in a legal battle with Miramax-Dimension Films over the rights of the franchise. [Scoop handed in by Diane and 'The Shape'; with additional reporting done by 'swan3', Josh, 'rvelasco', 'suspiria' 'Frankenseuss' and anonymously.]
New JC mag articles (sorry about the UK-centric nature of this, but I can only afford local mags, any other info is greatly recieved) - Total Film (Aug issue) reviews Dark Star, which is (and this is fantastic news) rereleased on video in the UK! Also they take a retrospective look at the classic "Assault On Precinct 13".
Halloween US video release news : Budget Supplier Anchor Bay Ent. has acquired the rights to John Carpenter's "Halloween", effective August 1st.The title has been controlled by Blockbuster Ent. for the past two years.During that time, the chain developed seasonal promotions around the "Blockbuster Exclusive".Anchor Bay plans to release "Halloween" in both pan-and-scan & widescreen versions in August & make the title available on DVD in October. Although Blockbuster priced "Halloween" at just $3.99, Anchor bay VP of Acquisitions Jay Douglass feels, "there's a still a healthy market for the title".He pointed to it's role as the basis for the story line in Miramax's "Scream"."Scream is an informercial for Halloween" he added. Source of Information : Video Business 7/21/97 issue, page 6. Good news, although there is a superb release of Halloween on widescreen PAL, with original trailer, available in the UK on MIA anyway.
Mad JC new film rumour shock : OK, if you check out this page based at the Halloween : Homepage Of Micheal Myers page you will see that JC is stated to be working on a new sci-fi movie called The Martian Chronicles! I very, very much doubt JC is going to have anything to do with Bradbury's seminal work, anyone have any idea of where this rumour started?
The Thing sequel? What is going on? How many rumours can we get on one day? Well, this one is from Usenet (that oh so reliable gossip shop) so take it with a mountain of salt : Recently when I bought a copy of John Carpenter's The Thing, the salesman said he had heard that Kurt Russell had recently signed on to do a sequel to this film. I would be happy if this were true. Has anyone else heard anything about this, whether it's true, when they'll shoot, when they'll release? Any info would be appreciated. Thanx, J.C. Everett

News as of July 24th The fantastic Dark Horizons website, fast approaching Harry Knowles Ain't It Cool News for the title of best movie news web page, has some stuff on the James Woods Entertainment tonight clip : John Carpenter's Vampires: I asked for a description of the ET 'Vampires' clip, and the flood of replies came spewing in faster than Princess Diana at a Barbeque. The best description was of a scene showing 'James Woods using a crossbow to stake a vampire and then retracting the string attached to the stake, which pulls the creature into the sunlight for some deep-fried cooking of it's flesh'. Way Cool. And this clip wasn't the only shining example. ET's poorer sister show 'Access Hollywood' showed quick flashes of the film, including Woods walking around with a bag of decapitated heads and a hotel exploding in flames. Thanks to 'HyenaSwine' and 'Mohammad Khan', the creatures who'll suck you dry (God you people have dirty minds!).
Shit, that sounds so exciting, that 'retracting stake' scene is straight out of the book. It sounds like the producers (JC is one of them) have rightly decided to go straight to the excellent source material. This film is looking better very day.

News as of July 23rd Due to a server crash here I have been unable to (and I still can't) access my e-mail. A lightning dawn swoop on the computer center managed to release two e-mails about James Woods appearance on Entertainment Tonight from the set of Vampires! Anyone with a transcript of this interview please contact me. Entertainment Tonight have a web site but unfortunately it is on msn.com, that wonderful non-free service. If anyone is a member please scour the ET site to see if they have a transcript or some piccies, or anything to do with Vampires. Let me know if anyone finds anything.

News as of July 18th This is pretty old news, but I just forgot to include it. This is taken from a www.amazon.com interview with Robert C Cumbow : Scarecrow has agreed to publish an updated Second Edition of my book ORDER IN THE UNIVERSE: THE FILMS OF JOHN CARPENTER. I have begun work on it already, and Scarecrow plans to bring it out in 1999.

News as of July 17th The IMDB have changed the name of their Vampires page to Vampire$, the original title for the novel but NOT the title that appears in the adverts. Hmmm, seems like the IMDB have got it wrong again.

News as of 16th July Some extremely startling news from Tempus Fugit : Ok first off I want to say THIS IS JUST A RUMOR. But hell, who knows? Could be true....ok im pushing it but its something to get excited about since there seems to be a drought of Vampire news. Take it with a grain of salt: Taken from EO which was released today: Carpenter HAS signed on to direct Halloween 7. They also say that Jamie Lee Curtis is seriously looking into signing on also....but I will give you more details in an upcoming issue. Also, Halloween fans will be excited about this one: Halloween is being re-released! Yes, my sources have heard that the movie is coming out on video again to celebrate it's 20th Anniversary. It may include some interviews and possibly a trailer for the movie. Remember, you heard it here first!
This is an unbelievable bit of news. If anyone has ANY info on this please get in touch.

News as of 14th July Remember that old query I had about JC being listed in the credits to a film called Darkness? Well, a kind bloke has given me the info I craved : DARKNESS is indeed an amateur film, shot on super 8. I interviewed director Lief Jonker a couple years ago for a possible article on amateur genre films like this. He did tell me that the John Chance credit was an homage to Carpenter. Great site by the way. Cheers to the Cinefantastique journo for that one.
