The Cat in the Hat - arguably the most well known of Dr Seuss' series of childrens' books. First published in 1957. |
The Cheshire Cat (seen here from Disney's animated version of 'Alice in Wonderland' of 1951, the voice of the Cheshire Cat supplied by Sterling Holloway). Lewis Carroll's classic tale of 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland' was published in 1865. |
Felix the Cat was created by Otto Messmer, appearing for the first time in 1922 in 'Felix Saves the Day'. |
Krazy Kat was created by George Herriman in 1913, along with Ignat (her unrequited love) and a number of other kooky characters residing in Coconino County. Try saying that 3 times, fast! |
Sylvester the Cat was created by Friz Freleng in 1945 for the cartoon 'Life with Feathers' where he first uttered those immortal words: "Thufferin' Thuccotash!". Mel Blanc supplied Sylvester's voice. In 1947 Sylvester was teamed for the first of many times with Tweety in a cartoon called 'Tweety Pie'.... the rest is history, as they say. |

Tigger (a personal favourite of mine) was created by A.A. Milne, as one of Winnie the Pooh's friends. Winne the Pooh came into being as a result of Christopher Robin's (Milne's son) fascination for Winnie, a real life (female) bear that was housed at London Zoo from 1919 until her death in 1934. In 1926 Milne's first book about this loveable bear and his friends, entitled 'Winnie the Pooh,' was published. |

Ernst Stavro Blofeld was the Number One of SPECTER, the villainous organisation that 007, James Bond, crossed paths with on more than one occasion while saving the world yet again..... In the 1967 film 'You Only Live Twice', the usually 'faceless' Blofeld was revealed to the audience . He was played with wonderful quiet menace by actor Donald Pleasance. Blofeld was known for his apparent great affection for his lovely white cat. Despite numerous attempts to establish the cat's name, I've not been able to locate it. In one article I found on the net, even Pleasance himself is quoted as saying that the cat never had a name (in the films). |
