Commonly known as Abramelin the Mage, Abra Melin was a pseudo-historical wandering Eastern sage whose magick is supposedly enshrined in the fourteenth century book, The Sacred Magick of Abramelin the Mage, a highly- esteemed Grimoire containing a detailed and precise system of Ritual Magick. The authorship is attributed to one "Abraham the Jew," an equally mythical character. The Book of Abramelin is probably the most 'practically' used of the old grimoires.

Abramelin Oil is used in Thelemic and other rituals. It was dubbed "Abramelin" oil by Aleister Crowley, who adapted his own version of the biblical recipe he found in the Grimoire "The sacred Magick of Abramelin the Mage."

Abramelin consistes of varying proportions of cinnamon, myrrh, galangal (a root related to gturmeric), and olive oil.

Abramelin Incense

This incense is described in The Sacred Magic of Abramelin the Mage and used for magickal work involving angels, to contact spirits or for consecration of altars or magical tools.

Cinnamon oil is corrosive so please be careful with this.

Abramelin oil ( Abramelin - New English Translation from German)

German Version:

1/4 total weight of the above in Olive Oil

French Version:

1/2 total weight of the above in Olive Oil

(Note: Cassia is a Cinnamon substitue. When you buy cinnamon in the store, it is usually Cassia as real Cinnamon is more expensive. The French author seems to have combined the Cassia and Cinnamon into a single ingredient.)

Abramelin Incense (Traditional)

Made With The Ingredients of the Original Recipe

Uses: Temple openings, evocations, general ritual work, tantric rites, Thelemic workings
Associations: Sun, Fire, & Water
Aroma: Exotic, spicy, hot, smooth, energetic, arousing

This rare incense is with the ingredients of the original Abramelin Oil: Cinnamon, Myrrh, and Galangal. The ratio of these ingredients is carefully maintained to assure the proper balance of their properties. While there are many differing recipes for Abramelin Incense, this Thelemic recipe follows those suggestions outlined in Liber Al vel Legis.

It is known that this powerful nature of Abramelin Incense is of the male and female centered together. This sacred incense is hand blended, infused, and exposed to air to bring forth its incredibly intense potency. While Abramelin Incense smells immediately of male fire, it is countered and balanced by potent and powerful water energy of the female, known to create an energy that draws out the potent sexuality of both men and women. It can also bring energy of levity and joy infused with passion. Abramelin incense is meant to be burned on charcoal. This incense may simply be burned for enjoyment, and has been recommended for certain Tantric experiences and serious ritual involving Thelemic energies.

Abramelin Incense is considered essential for evocation by many Ceremonial magicians, especially when attempting the long and complicated Abramelin ritual. It is also very effective for any rituals that work with the energies of the Sun (Fire) or Air (Mercury or Jupiter), or any of the spirits thereof.

It is based on the recipe in S.L. MacGregor Mathers' translation of the book: "Take of incense in tears (olibanum), 1 part; of Stacte (Or storax) half a part; of Lign Aloes a quarter of a part; and not being able to get this wood you shall take that of cedar, or of rose, or of citron, or any other odoriferous wood" (p. 77). Previously I was making this with aloeswood (lignum aloes, or as he calls it, lign aloes), but since I am unable to get any at a reasonable price at the moment, I decided to try some of the other possibilities. For an odoriferous wood I chose to use white sandalwood, because it is indeed very fragrant, it is ruled by Mercury, the god of the knowledge of magic, and both in terms of scent and vibrationally it goes with the other two ingredients (olibanum and liquid storax) much better than cedar, citron, or rose do. It smells pretty good too. This incense is made of pure, whole ingredients and not essential oils. Also, I do not use storax wood in this incense, only the resin. It can be quite sticky because of the storax but is a bit easier to get out of the tin if you first put it in the freezer for 45 minutes. Freezing it does not affect how it smells or damage it in any way. This incense is made of pure ingredients and so requires charcoal to burn. To encourage complete burning, put only a little piece on the charcoal at a time, no larger than a pea. Although the lid of the tin is not threaded, you can Open it more easily by turning the lid while lifting it up.

Abramelin OIL

Half of the ingredient's weight in olive oil (light recommended). Grind the first four ingredients in a mortar (or what-have-you). Stir together with oil, seal in a jar, and store in a dark, cool place. Shake occasionally. After a few weeks, strain and bottle.

Setup props and gather the five essential oil ingredients, attributed as follows:

A fifth element, Abramelin oil from a previous consecrated batch, is included as a "seed" for the new mixture if available (Spirit).

The following is a ritual that I have put together to assist me in mixing and charging the oil. It is loosely based on the Star Sapphire and is directed by the phases of the moon. You will need to obtain all the ingredient aromatic and olive oils, plus an incubation jar. This jar should be of clear glass (so that you can better view the color and constitution of the oil over time) and should be able to be sealed airtight. It should also, of course, be large enough to hold the finished amount of oil. This incubation glass will be the curcurbite or alembic (womb) in which the oil gestates until it is finished. It does not necessarily have to be the bottle in which you plan to store the oil, which can be of colored glass or more ornate.

In the temple, set up an altar in the East. This can be your personal working altar or the triple altar of the Gnostic Mass.

Preparation

Officers: Three operators will perform the mixing rituals over the course of one lunar cycle. These operators act as:

The Sulfur officer will effect the movement of all energies invoked, forming hexagrams and pouring the oils. Sulfur does not speak, but moves and performs various actions. May wear a red sash or tabard.

The Salt officer will ensure the fixing of the elements, preparing the working space prior to the ritual and handling all material components. Salt makes no motion of his or her own, but rather is moved by Mercury or Sulfur. May wear a blue or black sash or tabard.

The Mercury officer will perform all invocations and pronouncements. Mercury may speak and move, but may not handle material things alone. May wear a yellow or white sash or tabard (colors should be either red-blue-yellow or red-white-black)I suggest that through the course of the month, the officers are rotated through the roles so that each is able to fill each function in mixing the finished oil.

Ritual

Week 1

Begin on the new moon, or on the first Sunday after the new moon, by pouring the pre-measured amount of myrrh oil into the clean glass incubation jar. Have ready also the cinnamon oil, pre-measured and in another glass bottle.

Salt, Sulfur, and Mercury stand close to one another in the center of the working space facing the altar, forming a triangle. Sulfur and Mercury stand side by side facing the altar, Salt stands immediately behind them holding the incubation jar in the left hand and the container of cinnamon oil in the right.

Mercury recites the opening of the Anthem of Liber XV, from "Thou who art I" to "To thy child"

All three then give the signs of LVX, Salt making L, Sulfur making V and Mercury making X, all three then opening into the cross.

Both Sulfur and Mercury step aside and bring Salt through between them. Salt is brought to the altar and seated upon it. (optional)- Mercury and Sulfur may perform the Star Ruby or banishing and invoking pentagram rituals if desired. Mercury will make all necessary speech while Sulfur makes all the necessary actions.

Sulfur and Mercury approach the altar and guide Salt's right hand so that it holds the cinnamon oil in the middle of the three of them. They meditate for a moment in front of the open jar of cinnamon oil and inhale its fiery scent.

With the right thumb between the index and medius ("in ficus") , Sulfur makes a unicursal hexagram of flashing fire over the container of cinnamon oil. He then energetically gives the sign of Vir.

Mercury proclaims

"Father, be thou adored!"

Salt's arm is again moved back to its normal side position. Now the Incubation jar with the myrrh oil is moved to the center position. They meditate for a moment in front of the open jar of myrrh oil and inhale its scent. With the left thumb in ficus, Sulfur makes a unicursal hexagram over the container of myrrh oil. He gives the sign of Mulier .

Mercury proclaims:

"Mother, be thou adored!".

The incubation jar remains in the middle, in Salt's hand. Sulfur takes Salt's right hand and guides the container of cinnamon oil so that it is directly over the mouth of the incubation jar. Sulfur holding Salt's hand, together they pour the cinnamon oil into the container of myrrh oil.

Mercury declares:

"PATER ET MATER UNUS DEUS ARA!"
(translation: Father and Mother Gods both protect.)

Salt and Sulfur seal the incubation jar and hold the oil before a candle watching the two oils swirling and blending together, becoming one. Mercury and Sulfur assist Salt to wrap the incubation jar in black fabric. It may then be set on the altar, or remain sitting in his or her lap.

Mercury declares:

"ABRAHADABRA!"

It will be later placed in a closed box or cabinet and set in a warm place (78-88° F is ideal) to circulate and digest. Once a day, or every other day, the contents of the jar should be swirled around to assist in the blending.

Week 2

One week later, unwrap the incubation jar and pre-measure the proper amount of galangal oil into a separate bottle. As before, Salt, Sulfur, and Mercury stand close to one another in the center of the working space facing the altar, forming a triangle. Sulfur and Mercury stand side by side facing the altar, Salt standing immediately behind them holding the incubation jar in the left hand and the container of galangal oil in the right.

Sulfur and Mercury approach the altar and guide Salt's right hand so that it holds the galangal oil in the middle of the three of them. They meditate for a moment in front of the open jar of oil and inhale its expansive, spicy scent.

With the right thumb between the index and medius ("in ficus"), Sulfur makes a unicursal hexagram of flashing fire over the container of galangal oil. He then gives the sign of Puer. The incubation jar remains in the middle, in Salt's hand. Sulfur takes Salt's right hand and guides the container of galangal oil so that it is directly over the mouth of the incubation jar. Sulfur holding Salt's hand, together they pour the galangal oil into the container of blended cinnamon and myrrh.

Mercury declares:

"MATER ET FILIUS UNUS DEUS ARA!"
(translation: Mother and Son Gods both protect.)

Salt and Sulfur seal the incubation jar and hold the oil before a candle watching the oils swirling and blending together, becoming one. Mercury and Sulfur assist Salt to wrap the incubation jar in black fabric. It may then be set on the altar, or remain sitting in his or her lap.

Replace the incubation jar in the closed box or cabinet. Swirl frequently as before.

Week 3-4

At the full moon, or the first Sunday after the full moon, unwrap the incubation jar and prepare a pre-measured bottle of fine virgin olive oil. Prior to beginning the ritual, open the incubation jar and inhale the scent of the blended aromatic oils. Note any difference in color or viscosity of the oil. Close the incubation jar.

As before, Salt, Sulfur, and Mercury stand close to one another in the center of the working space facing the altar, forming a triangle. Sulfur and Mercury stand side by side facing the altar, Salt standing immediately behind them holding the incubation jar in the left hand and the container of olive oil in the right.

Sulfur and Mercury approach the altar and guide Salt's right hand so that it holds the olive oil in the middle of the three of them. They meditate for a moment in front of the open jar of oil and inhale its familiar earthy scent. With the right thumb between the index and medius ("in ficus"), Sulfur makes a unicursal hexagram of flashing fire over the container of olive oil. He then gives the sign of Puella. The incubation jar remains in the middle, in Salt's hand. Sulfur takes Salt's right hand and guides the container of olive oil so that it is directly over the mouth of the incubation jar. Sulfur holding Salt's hand, together they pour the olive oil into the container of blended oils.

Mercury declares:

"FILIUS ET FILIA UNUS DEUS ARA!
(translation: Son and Daughter gods both protect.)

Salt and Sulfur seal the incubation jar and hold the oil before a candle watching the oils swirling and blending together, becoming one. Mercury and Sulfur assist Salt to wrap the incubation jar (extra-securely) in black fabric. All three place right hands on it, and give the sign of silence. The incubation jar is placed in a closed box or left covered on the altar. All three cover their eyes, turn their backs on it and leave the room. Later, the jar may be removed to a secure place where it will remain undisturbed. If warm weather, burying it in the earth would be good. This time, DO NOT uncover or swirl the jar of blended oil to look at it over the next two weeks. Leave it undisturbed to digest further during the period of the waning moon. Don't peek!

Week 5

On the final week (on the new moon, or the first Sunday after the new moon), retrieve the wrapped jar and prepare a small bottle of residue from your last batch of abramelin oil (or a little bit of someone else's abramelin oil). As before, Salt, Sulfur, and Mercury stand close to one another in the center of the working space facing the altar, forming a triangle. Sulfur and Mercury stand side by side facing the altar, Salt standing immediately behind them holding the container of "seed" abramelin oil. The incubation jar is on the altar.

All three then give the signs of LVX, Salt making the L, Sulfur making the V and Mercury making the X, all three then opening into the cross. Salt then assumes Puella. Both Sulfur and Mercury step aside and bring Salt through between them. Salt is taken to the altar. As they proceed, Mercury recites the invocation from the opening of the Anthem of Liber XV as before. Salt stands before the altar in Puella. Sulfur and Mercury together touch Salt on the body and join hands behind as Puella opens into Mulier . Salt then is seated on the altar. Sulfur and Mercury assist Salt in unwrapping and opening the incubation jar. Sulfur makes a unicursal hexagram over the incubation jar.

Sulfur and Salt then together let fall a drop of the abramelin "seed" while Mercury declares:

"FILIA ET PATER UNUS DEUS ARA!"
(translation: Son and Father gods both protect.)

All three quickly inhale a lungful of the scent from the open incubation jar, and release it crying:

ARA, ARA, ARA!
(translation: protect, protect protect!)

Salt then assumes M.T. position. Salt and Sulfur together pick up the glass of oil and walk around the circle presenting it to the quarters, while Mercury walks before them triumphantly proclaiming:

OMNINO IN DUOS:
(trans. Wholly into two)
DUO IN UNUM:
(trans. Two into one)
UNUS IN NIHIL:
(trans. One against nothing)
HAEC NEC QUATTUOR NEC OMNIA NEC DUO NEC UNUS NEC NIHIL SUNT!
(trans. This is neither four nor entirely two nor one neither nothing existing.)

All return to the east and support / elevate the oil proclaiming together:

GLORIA PATRI ET MATRI ET FILIO ET FILIAE ET SPIRITUI SANCTO EXTERNO ET SPIRITUI SANCTO INTERNO UT ERAT EST ERIT IN SAECULA SAECULORUM SEX IN UNO PER NOMEN SEPTEM IN UNO ARA!
(translation: Glory Father, Mother, Son, Daughter, the outer Holy Spirit and the inner Holy Spirit in order to exist forever six in one by means of the name of seven in one protection.)

The oil is placed on the altar. All three return to the center and give the signs of LVX as before.
