Lina got the Orihalcon
Statue that Zelgadiss was after (one of Zelgadiss' men, Zolf, was
a 
member
of Dragon's Fang Bandit Gang, which Lina had defeated, so Zel was
pissed off). He thought that the statue could help him cure his curse...
but it didn't.
Zel is 1/3 demon, 1/3 human and 1/3 golem. Originally, he is a human,
but when he was 13 years old, he had this desire to be stronger than
anyone else, and Rezo promised him that he'd make him stronger. It
sounds pathetic and he sounds dumb enough to believe his dear ol'
gramps, and he agreed to Rezo... *POOF!* He turned into a "freak".
That's the reason why he dreaded his own grandpa, Rezo.
Still not losing hope to find his cure, he began to go after the Claire
Bible, but still, no luck. 
He
wasn't even able to see it. ;_;
Anyway, being 1/3 golem isn't that bad. His body could resist cannon
balls, gun bullets...he was even used as an anchor once when Lina
& co. were trying to catch a lake dragon. almost nothing can harm
him but the Hikari no Ken.
He would often hide himself away from the public eye, wearing a hood
over his head and a mask that would cover his nose and mouth, his
eyes are the only ones exposed. He is quite a shy person, very sensitive
when it comes to his looks (he is self-conscious). He's very quiet
and would only speak up if necessary. He also has this tendency to
be selfish and let everyone down. But, speak of love or romance or
any kinda mushy stuff to him, he'd easily blush. ^^
He is good at handling swords and he would often use the spell Astral
Vine to enhance the blade of his sword. He is very good at
Shaman Spells, and he also learned to cast the Ra Tilt.
Lina looks at Zelgadiss like a best friend, and that's the same with
him, nothing more, nothing less... (hey, best 
friends
can admire each other, right? But it doesn't mean that there's this
intimacy going on between them!).
On Gourry, since they're the only guys with the group most of the
time, you might say that they're also close friends...
In the novels, Zelgadiss would never turn SD. He's always serious
there, acting suspicious; however, Amelia had helped him with her
white magic without even considering that he's like a complete stranger
to her. Anyway, going to Amelia, she greatly admires Zelgadiss and
has developed a crush on him.
Yet, he really despised Xelloss. Why? The reason isn't clear in the
anime & manga, but I supppose the part in the novels that was
entitled, "The Abandoned Story of Zelgadiss & Xelloss"
can give enough information why.
Although Zel would often act like he doesn't care about things going
on around his friends, it would somewhat trouble him too, especially
when it comes to Amelia. Remember, in the anime, he mentioned something
about the 
Saillune
family and Amelia's older sister who disappeared. Amelia felt uneasy
there and was a little surprised to hear those words from him. Lina
& Gourry saw how she reacted and they fell silent, Zel didn't
realize what he had said until Lina had to snap him out of it. He
felt guilty...and Gourry bonked his head with his fist.
Well, when it comes to his clothes, in the novels, Hajime Kanzaka-sama
described his clothes repeatedly: White-colored. But, in the anime,
he wore cream-colored clothes.
