Kalidasa's
Purva-Megh
Verse
53 through 56
Verse
53
Having reached the mountain
source of Ganga,
Himalayan crags, fragrant
with jellied musk of
Kasturi deer, lure you to
their peaks
To rest from travel's fatigue.
Reposing on a snowy summit
you are blanketed
In radiance, as with white
dust from Nandi's feet.
Verse
54
If fire
ignites the forest of devdars
By rubbing
branches together in the wind,
And
burns the hairy tails of yaks,
You
should extinguish it completely
By shedding
torrents of water --
Let
the noble save those who suffer.
Verse
55
Eight-legged
monsters on the mountain
Are
willing to break their legs
Attacking
as you leave their path.
Frighten
them with rain and hail:
Intent
on fruitless behavior,
Should
they not be objects of contempt?
Verse
56
O Megh, prostrating in devotion,
Circumambulate the Moon-Crowned
one's
Sacred foot-print marked on
stone --
A place piled with offerings
from siddhas who,
Seeing it at death and cleansed
thereby of sin,
Are merged in their Lord.
