Hearts are Broken

Jack walked to his girlfriends house. Him and Sarah had been going out for a one month. Her grandma came into town today and she wants him to meet her! Jack was not really fond of old people because he never knew what to say to them, but he would do anything to make Sarah happy. Because he was planning on asking her to be his wife. He walked up to the Jacob's door in his best outfit. He knocked on and in ten seconds Sarah was at the door.

"Hi, Jack!" Sarah said as she threw herself in Jack's arms.

"Hi, Doll," Jack replied giving Sarah a big kiss. He thought about the first time they had met. It was the day before he decided to go on strike. From the first time their eyes met he fell for her instantly!!

"Jack," Sarah said bringing Jack back to that time.

"Sorry, Doll, I was just thinking!" Jack replied as Sarah led Jack to the living room. There in there was Sarah's parents, Esther and Mayer, her brothers, David and Les, and her grandma.

"Jack, this is my grandma Ellen," Srah told Jack. Jack shook hands w/ her. She seemed different then other old people. She looked in shape so she must exercise, which usually old people do not do he thought. She seemed friendly.

"Hello, Jack," Ellen said. "Nice to meet you. I have heard so much about you and do not worry it was all good."

"Nice to meet you to," Jack answered.

As Jack walked home he thought about the conversation at dinner. Sarah was gonna be gone for two weeks. She was going to stay w/ her gandma. After dinner Sarah pulled Jack into her room (*he-he*). She told Jack she was leaving in two day sand she thinks her and Jack should seperate till she was back. When he asked what does she mean by seperate she said it's like when u are married. You do not get divorced you just spend time away from each other, but are still married. So in other words, he asked, she was using this for an opportunity to go out w/ other guys while she was gone. She said no. He called her a liar and left pissed.

Sarah was leaving today. Jack and her still did not make up. He walked to her apartment and as he was about to hit her street he saw an accident. Police cars were all around. As he walked up closer he saw Sarah's parents crying. He went over to ask what was wrong when he saw a specific ring on a hand sticking out from beneath the beat up taxi. Jack bent down for a closer look. It was his ring on Sarah's hand. Shocked Jack could not say a word. He all of a sudden felt a hand on his shoulder. It was David. Jack got to his feet and stood there staring at David with his baffled eyes.

" Dave, please do not tell me that that is Sarah in there. Please......-" Jack's eyes filled w/ tears as his voice trailed off. Then Jack burst out in tears. David hugged Jack as Jack stood there and cried. Then he pushed David off. He was so upset. How could the girl he loved die. He vowed that he would never feel for a girl the way he felt for Sarah. Jack walked back to the Lodging House in tears. He threw himself onto his bunk. Jack kept crying. He could not stop. It was like someone took a knife, stabbed him in his heart, and truned the knife over, over, and over.

"That night all the boys came into the Lodging House to see Jack crying. They all acted like they didn't notice so he knew that they knew.

"Hey, Cowgoy," Racetrack said.

"Leave me alone," Jack sobbed. Racetrack sighed because he knew Jack was ashamed of being seen crying.

"Jack," it was David, "Sarah is ok! The police said that when you were there that she was just knocked out but she is in the hospital now!"

"Really?" Jackasked. "Can I go see her?"

"Sure," Race replied. "Me and Davey will walk ya."

When they go to the hospital David took them to Sarah's room where they found Les (who was sleeping), Mayer, and Esther byher bed.

"Where is your grandma?" Jack whispered to David in his ear.

"She died instantly in the accident," David replied w/ tears in his eyes.

It wasn't until Racetrack said hello that Sarah's parents noticed the three guys were there.

"Hello," Esther said w/ a sad face.

"Hi," Jack responded.

"Here everyone leave the room but Jack," Esther said. Everyone did what she said. "Here Jack you spend time w/ Sarah."

Then she left the room. Jack pulled a chair next to her bad.

"Hi," he started not knowing what to say. Then he noticed how frail she looked and that's when the tears and the emotions came. "I love you so much, Sarah. Please be okay. I am so scared. Please be okay."

Jack and Race walked home in mostly silence. Every once and awhile there was a word or two from Race trying to cheer up his friend and a grunt from Jack. That night when everyone else was asleep, well at least Jack thought everyone else was, he cried himself to sleep while Race listened to his best friends pain wishing there was something he could do to help his pal.

The next morning instead of going to work Jack went to the hospital to see how Sarah was. Right when he got to his room Esther rushed to him.

"Jack," she started, "Sarah lost a lot of blood in te accident and we, me and Mayer, were hoping that you would be so kind to test to see if you had the same blood type as her.

"Sure," he replied hoping that he would have the type.

Five minutes later Jack had blood taken. Only a little. Then they had to wait to see if he had the match in his blood. The two minutes to do that seemed to drag on VERY slowly. Finally the doctor came back w/ the results.'

"Jack Kelly," Doctor Murphs said, "I am glad to say that you can donate blood to Sarah."

So the doctor took 1/2 pint of blood from Jack. While they waited to see if it would help Sarah Jack took a nap. He woke an hour later to see she was awake. She was so happy to see him.

"Oh Jack, "she said as he hugged her. "Thank you!!!"

He gave her a kiss and then Esther pulled him out of the room.

"So David told me that you want to ask my daughter to marry you?" she said.

"Yes, I do," Jack replied.

"Well do it now!"

So Jack walked into the room w/ a little bit of cofidence.

"Sarah," Jack started, "Will you marry me?"

"Jack.............."
