Chapter 5
"Enchantin', ya fell off da bed," Jack said, waking me up from my sweet
dream. I looked at him, before grumbling about hitting my head in my dream.
Jack laughed, and went to his bunk to get his shoes on. I slowly got up, and
screamed when I saw myself in the mirror. I looked horrible, but nothing a
little brushing couldn't take care of.
"I see Enchantin' did' wake up on da right side of da bed dis mornin","
Race said, drying his face with a towel. I glared at him, and proceeded to
try to get my brush through my hair.
"Race, if you know what's healthy, you'll shut up right now," I smiled at
him, getting my brush stuck in my tangled hair. Race backed off, and I went
back to the bunk room to change and get ready for the day.
"Hey Enchantin', you'se okay? You'se fell pretty hard last night," Blink
commented. I laughed, and shoved him playfully.
"Blink, if I were terribly hurt, I'd been screaming in pain right now. But
since I'm not, that should give you a clue as how I am," Suddenly, I wasn't
smiling anymore, but instead, just down right sarcastic to him. I guess my
sudden change in heart surprised Blink, cause he just walked away mumbling
something about how girls were too hard to figure out. When I reached the
distribution office, I found that Snitch had saved a place for me in line,
and he also offered to buy my papes too, but I declined that offer.
The whole day I wasn't acting like myself, offering a rude comment whenever
I had the chance. Snitch didn't take to my change very well, and by the end
of the day, took me aside, and asked me what had happened to me? Had I been
inhabited by the devil last night or something. The only offer of an
explanation I could give him was that I had hit my head last night and I had
a major headache, causing my brain to act strange. Snitch just laughed at
this, and kissed me, causing me to forget everything.
Finally, we resigned to going over to Tibby's to find everyone else. To my
surprise I found a new girl sitting with Jack. She was a pretty thing, with
blonde hair, and green eyes, and a spectacular smile that caused all the
newsies to fall for her. She noticed me and Snitch, and gestured us over,
offering us one of her famous smiles as a friendly sign. Snitch and I, hand
in hand, made our way to where she and Jack were sitting.
"Hey, my name is Megan, but everyone calls me Blondie. What's your name?"
She asked, looking from me to Snitch, studying us, her eyes bright with
interest.
"My name's Enchanting, and this here, this is my boyfriend, Snitch. When
did you get here?" I asked, sitting down on the opposite side of them,
studying Jack. Ever since the break up with Sarah a few days ago, I hadn't
seen Jack very happy. Now, with Blondie, he was beaming, his eyes bright
with happiness, his smile, radiant.
"Nice to meet you Enchanting and Snitch. Um, I got here from Santa Fe, my
Grandpa owns the Newsboys Lodging House. So, he paid for my trip down here.
I'm to be a newsie while I live here," Blondie said, taking Jack's hand, who
by his reaction, didn't mind a bit. I could tell I liked Blondie from the
start, and was hoping we could become great friends. We spent the remainder
of the afternoon, talking, until we realized we had to go to the dance that
Medda was holding for her fiancé, Leonardo DiCaprio. (*Author's Note* I
didn't mean for this to be a coincidence, I just thought the name would be
cool!) I raced Blondie up the stairs to the bunk room, and we collapsed on
my bed, only to find, we weren't alone. I saw Spot and Cupcake, on Spot's
bed, the one he used everytime he visits Manhattan. I noticed that Blondie
saw him too, for her eyes became wide, and her smile bigger. I could tell
she had fallen for Spot's dangerous beauty. If only she knew how many other
girls had fallen for him too, myself included, though nobody knows, and I
intent on keeping it that way.
"Who is that?" She whispered, pointing at Spot and Cupcake. I had just
finished taking off my shoes, and was rubbing my sore feet.
"That, is Spot Conlon, the most famous and respected Newsies, not to the
mention the cutest and the most egotistical newsie in all of New York. But
even though he can be a tad bit conceited, we're still best friends, and
always will be," I took off my socks, and let my legs get some air. Blondie
registered all the information I had just told her. She gave Cupcake a weird
look, and looked at me, her eyes full of curiosity. "And that, that is
Cupcake, Spot's evil little girlfriend. Take my advice, don't mess with her
or Spot, she'll literally soak ya. Besides, she's a real brat, who's too
over protective of Spot. She barely even lets ME hang out with Spot, because
I'm his best friend and I'm a girl."
Blondie gave me a sympathetic look and patted me on the back. "Sounds like
a real witch if you ask me?"
I laughed, "I wonder where she keep her broom!" We both laughed, and looked
over at the couple, making sure they didn't hear us. Suddenly, Jack and
Snitch came up to take us to Medda's, and we still weren't dressed. We told
them to come up in fifteen minutes. I found my dresses from my old life, and
let Blondie borrow one. She wore a dull yellow scoop next dress, with blue
flowers on the bottom of it. I wore my periwinkle one, which brought back
memories or my mother, and suddenly, I found the urge to want to see her
again. Just as we had promised, we were ready within fifteen minutes. When
we walked downstairs, we found Snitch and Jack very dressed up, and looking
quite handsome We were very proud to have them escort us to the party. When
we arrived, we found Spot and Cupcake slow dancing to the song Medda was
singing. On impulse I took Snitch's hand, and lead him out onto the dance
floor. I wrapped my arms around his neck, well rather his back considering
I'm a foot shorter than him. I laid my head against his chest, the soothing
sound of his breathing calming me. I looked across the room and found Spot
staring at me, while Cupcake kissed his cheek. I smiled, and I couldn't help
wondering, is Spot falling for me? I knew it was a stupid question, but my
heart couldn't help but wonder. When the song ended, we clapped for Medda's
beautiful singing, and sat down in a chair, to eat dinner.
"Hello Enchantin', hello Snitch, havin' fun tanight?" I looked up into
Spot's beautiful eyes, and nodded, mesmerized by them. Cupcake noticed me
staring at him, and automatically started kissing him, causing him to break
the gaze, and kiss her. Snitch laughed, and made some comment on how she
couldn't get enough of his loving or something. As the night wore on, Snitch
acted like the perfect gentleman, dancing every slow song but one with me.
That one I danced with Spot, who had gotten away from Cupcake for a few
minutes to dance with me. As he held me in his arms, I felt right, I felt
like this was where I was supposed to be. I closed my eyes and swayed gently
to the music. My eyes found his, and we were locked in a stare that neither
one of us wanted to end. When he looked in my eyes, he found the one thing
that I couldn't reveal to anyone for a long time; my love for Spot Conlon.
But we both knew that friendship relationships never work out, and we wanted
to stay best friends forever. As the last song, signaling the end of the
dance slowly came to an end, Spot and I parted with a silent vow to never
speak of our love. Snitch got my coat, and we headed out to Central Park to
go for a walk. The moon shone silver as it lighted our path for us. I knew I
liked Snitch, very much, and I didn't want to break up with him, but I loved
Spot, that was undeniable. Snitch meant the world to me, and I certainly
wasn't going to break his heart, cause he still really liked me, but I was
unsure about what to do with my feelings for Spot.
As we continued walking, I suddenly grew very cold, and after a kiss, asked
if he could take me back to the Lodging House. We agreed, and lead me home,
where I went to bed immediately to contemplate about my feelings for Spot
and Snitch.
Chapter 6
Snitch woke me up with a kiss the next morning, which made me quite happy.
I longingly kissed him back, wrapping my arms around his head, deepening the
kiss. When we broke apart, I had a big smile on my face, longing for the day
to begin. As I got ready, I found that Jack's eyes were bulging out at
Blondie, who gave me a secret smile, and looked at Jack. We both laughed,
and headed downstairs. We both said hello to Kloppman as we passed him on
the way out the door.
It was a grey day, not letting the sun shine through. It was quite misty,
moistening everything. Blondie and I hurried to the distribution office to
buy our papers. As soon as we got our papes, I looked everywhere for Snitch,
for he had wanted to sell papes with me today. Considering he was no where
in site, Blondie and I sold together, vowing that when we saw Snitch, he'd
take her place. While we sold papes, we talked about everything really. She
knew Jack was very intrigued by her, considering he never took his eyes off
her, and he always wanted to be around her. She knew Spot and I were best
friends, but she wanted to be more than just a friend with him.
Turned out,
Blondie has liked Spot ever since she visited a few summer ago. She had met
Spot on the Brooklyn Bridge, and as soon as she saw him, she'd fallen for
him, like every girl in the city. She'd wanted to be his girl, but he told
her he loved a girl named Celeste. When I heard this, my eyes grew wide with
wonder. Did Spot once upon a time, have his heart set on me? This left me
wondering for the rest of the afternoon.
"Enchanting, let's head back to the Lodging House, and sort out our money,
and talk some more? Want to?" She asked, collecting the penny a kind old
lady gave her for a paper. I nodded, and started walking in the direction of
the lodging house. When we reached there, we found Race, Mush, Blink, and
Snoddy outside on the steps, playing poker. Blondie went up to them, and
leaned on Race's shoulder. "So, who's been winning?"
Mush looked at his cards before answering, "Well, let's just say that Race
hasn't won once yet."
"Yet. I still have hope. You ladies wanna join in? The game's kinda small,
we need more players. More players, more money!" Race put down a full house,
which beat all the other player's pairs. Race raised his arms in glory,
collecting at least twenty cents in change. Mush smiled, and winked at
Blondie, before collecting the cards and shuffling them for the next round.
We walked up the steps, and into the lodging house, where we found Snitch
and Jack talking quietly among themselves. Their backs were turned to we
took this opportunity to sneak up on, and scare them. We touched their
shoulders, and they jumped about three feet into the air.
"Oh, hey there beautiful. How was selling?" Snitch asked, kissing me
lightly on the lips. I shrugged, and snuggled into his arms, cold from
walking around in the mist the whole day. He had no objection, so I stayed
their for a few minutes. Jack was immediately distracted by Blondie, who
turned up her flirtatious ways and snuggled into Jack's arms as well. He
gave Snitch a Victorian look before, wrapping his arms around her tightly,
and lightly kissing her neck. Blondie gave me a small smile, and winked at
me. My gaze fell as I thought about Blondie. I knew she liked Jack, but she
had been in love with Spot forever. I didn't feel that it was right for her
to lead Jack on like this. But soon, she made my decision for me.
"Enchanting, Jack just asked me to be his girl. Aren't you happy for me?" I
nodded, and looked up at Snitch's smiling face, before leaving his warm
arms, and heading upstairs. Blondie followed, and we sat up there talking
until everyone else joined us to go to sleep.
