Ellis Island 1999, To Queens 1899?!?!
By: South MacCain
"Oy Vey." I sighed as I stood ,with my two friends: Katie Jenkinson and
Tara Fisher, in line for the stupid ferry back to New Jersey from Ellis Island.
"You okay Jelly Bean?" Tara asked, shilding her hand over her eyes from
the swealtering hot summer sun. I nodded.
"Could this possibly take any LONGER?!" I yelled at the crew men
standing a few feet ahead of me. Neither one of them paid attention to me.
"Shut up!" A man yelled from behind me. I flipped him off.
"Whose brain dead idea was this again?" Katie asked sarcastically. The both
of us looked at Tara. Mis. Innocence, as we liked to call her. She hated to do
anything that was above the law. Katie and me on the other hand, were
always getting her into trouble.
My eyes wandered to three big signs on a gate about a hundred feet ahead
of us. They read. 'Off Limits', Stop', and 'No Tresspassing, authorized
personal only.' Katie looked and we got mischevious grins. Tara followed
our gazes. Then she quickly turned around.
"No! No! NO! You two...no!" We looked at her. With expressions that read
'why not?'
"We get caught, we get arrested. Not a good thing for you two!" I sighed
again. I was probbably the biggest trouble maker out of the three of us, but
that didn't stop my curiousity. I lead the way to the gate.
A guard walked behind the gate. He was working on something.
"Hello girls how are you today?" He asked walking through the gate.
"Fine thanks." Katie said. I watched the gate. It stayed open. The guard
walked back through and closed it.
"Have a nice day you three." He said before driving away in a a-tv. I gate
was closed but unlocked: which was a stupid thing on his fault.
"Tara, go around the other end and see if there is a less obvious way to get
in." I said looking back. We were out in the open.
Tara mumbled some cuses under her breath and went. Katie and me sat
down on a bench by a tree.
"She's right we could get arrested." Katie said, she was losing her nerve. I
cocked an eye brow.
"With our records, I don't think it will matter to much. Just say we're those
ghostbuster type people." She laughed.
"They'd put us in a nut house." She said smiling. We looked over at the gate
and then back at where all the people were. The ferry was here.
"Damn we're gonna miss the ferry." Katie said sarcastically. I snapped my
fingers.
"No, there isn't an opening except for a broken window, but we won't fit
through it."
"Then we'll just have to go through the gate." I said, and stood up.
"Am I brave enough to do this?" Tara asked herself.
"No, but I am." I said and quickly unlocked the gate. The three of us ran.
The halls were damp and musty, and condemed. We were all very quiet,
atleast until we knew we were out of hearing range.
There was another gate at the end of a hallway. We looked over it. There
was a gap about a foot and a half seperation from the gate and ceiling. We
climbed over and ran again, keeping down low.
"Uh, Kayla... Katie." Tara said nervously. Katie and I turned around quickly
thinking we had been seen or something.
"Were in the infermory." She said nervously. I looked at Katie and we
shrugged.
"So?" I asked.
"So lots of people died in the infermory: plus it's haunted." Kaite and my
faces lit up with excitment.
"Oh, maybe I shouldn't have told you that." Tara said hiding her own
excitment with fear.
"Come on." Katie said. We excited a building and ran across a large court
yard to where the dormitories are.
"One. Two, three four five... every body in the car so come on lets ride...to
the liquior store down the corner...."Katie sang. I hated Lou Bega. Mambo #
five was becoming old and overplayed.
"Katie can't you sing something else?" I begged. She stopped singing and
was quiet for a minute: thinking of another song to sing.
"Bay-bay...I'm so into you." Tara and I rolled my eyes. She had to sing
another song that had been overplayed.
"You got that something what can I do," She sang. Tara joined in.
"Bay-Bay you spend me around-the earth is movin' but I can't feel the
ground. Every time you look at me my heart is jumpin' it's easy ot see-You
drive me crazy I just can't sleep, I'm so excited I'm in to deep Crazy but it
feels alright, baby thinkin' of you keeps me up all night." We were all
singing.
We had gone up three flights of stairs and were now walking down a narrow
hall. It was very dusty and Tara coughed. She had ashma. I stopped and she
went through my dark green bookbag looking for her inhaler. She put it
back and zipped it up. We walked a few inches and then the floor fell in.

"Hey youse okay?" A fuzzy voice asked me. I slowly opened my eyes and
looked at a boy. He had curly red hair with blue eys. He had a New
York/Irish accent. Kinda like one was tryin' to over come the other.
He was wearing a pair of torn pants and a ragged shirt. A goldish colored
hat covered his hair.
"I'm fine." I looked around. People were crowded all around me. I was in a
street around a bunch of tall stone buildings. Street vendors crowded the
cobblestone streets. COBBLESTONE?!?!?!
"Where the Hell am I!" I yelled at the boy. He backed up alittle.
"Youse in Queens." I looked at him quizzically.
"New York?" He nodded.
"Holy Shit!" People were all looking at me. There were higher class woman
wearing long skirts, bodices, and really taky hats. The boy was holding a
bundle of newspapers under his arm.
"Let me see that." I said and grabbed one from him. July 1st, 1899.
"Oh Shit." I said a little quiter. I felt a hand on my shoulder: Tara hung
limply on me. Katie walked over from where ever she had....arrived, landed.
fallin', whatever.
Every body looked at us strangly. Tara looked at the paper I was holding
and fainted. I bent over to quickly catch her before she hit the ground hard.
Katie helped me get her on my back.
"Ah...follow me." The kid said.
"What your name?" Katie asked. The boy turned around.
"It's Shawn but everybody calls me Irish." Katie looked at me. I shrugged
my shoulders and shifted Tara's position on my shoulders.
"Hey Kay?" Katie asked. I looked at her.
"How did we get from 1999 Ellis Island, to 1899 Queens?" She asked. We
walked onto a peir, a boy alittle taller than me, with light brown hair and
crystal blue eyes walked over to us.
"I don't know but I'm glad we did, damn!"I said low so that he wouldn't
hear. I was the most boy crazy out of the three of us. Katie looked at me.
"Oh yes." She said nodding her head in agreement.
"Whats tis Irish?" The guy asked looking us over. We looked odd for 1899.
Katie was wearing a pair of capri pants, a purple tube tob with a shrug, and
a pair of Steve Madden platform sandals. I was wearing a pair of L.E.I'S
with a spaghetti strap tank top with black and red chinese characters on it. I
had a pair of boot shoes. And there was that minor factor that I was leaning
over in a loose fitted shirt with no bra.
"Spot tis is...ah. Youse names?" Irish asked.
"Kayla O'Brien." I said.
"The girl on my back is the ever unconcious; Tara Fisher, and that is Katie
Jenkinsons." The Hottie Irish called Spot laughed at my introduction.
"Spot Conlon, the leada of the Brooklyn Newsies." He said and went to
shake my hand, but noticing I didn't have one free he smiled.
"You got a place where we could put her down somewhere?" Spot nodded
and motioned for us to follow him. All of his 'newsies' watch us with great
interest. Katie did the same except she wasn't looking at how odd they
looked she was looking to see how cute they were.
"Put her heah." He said and pointed to a bench like thing. He took off his
shirt and revealed the muscles in his chest and arms. Katie and I were
looking at each other grinning.
"Go for a swim?" He asked. I nodded and put Tara down. Katie took off her
clothes to reveal her Speedo one piece. Spot looked at her;his eyes wide.
I reached into my back pack and pulled out my baige and jade green bikini
top. Spot looked at that and his mouth fell alittle. I put it on under my tank
top and then took off my clothes. I uncliped my hair and let my light brown
hair fall to my shoulders. Irish and Spot looked at me and Katie.
"Ready?" Spot said uneasy. I nodded. Katie and I watched as Spot and Irish
cannon balled into the water. The looked at us.
"What can't swim?" Spot asked mockingly. I looked at Katie, we had been
on the same swim team since we were five. We could swim.
"1 2 3" I said silently. Katie and I did swan dives into the water. I found
Spot's foot and pulled him under water. I went up for air. Spot followed me.
I climbed out of the water and grabbed my towel. Tara was finally coming
to. Spot came up behind me and tickled my sides. I laughed, and turned
around on him doing the same.We flirted with each other, completely
ignoring every one else and Tara's confused gazes.
"Let's go eat, huh?" Irish suggested. Katie and Tara nodded in agreement.
"Good idea, come on you two lovebirds." Spot and I stopped and looked at
them. I blushed and grabbed my clothes and quickly put them on. The
others wen't ahead, but Spot waited. I tripped when I was putting my shoes
on, Spot caught me and we both laughed at me. Katie and Tara looked at
each other and smirked. I say them and shot them both looks. They laughed
at us, and kept walking.
"Where we going...never mind." Katie said when she noticed some boys our
age and older hanging around a statue of Horace Greeley.
"Hey ya Spot!" A boy with a cowboy hat and red bandana said as he walked
towards us. He looked over at us, and got a puzzeled look on his face. A boy
with an eyepatch walked over to us. Tara's face lit up.
"Hey ya Jacky-Boy, tis heah is Kayla O'Brien, Tara Fisher, and Katie
Jenkinson. Goils tis is me best friend Jack Kelly and tat is Kid Blink." He
blushed when he noticed Tara and kissed her hand. A trio of ninties girls
getting treated like old fashion women from the Titanic era. Ms. Inocence
liked it though, her face was redder then her three quarter sleeve shirt.
"Hey Jacky-Boy I say we's go ta Tibby's." Jack and Blink nodded they
couldn't take their eyes off of us, but in two different manners. Love and
curiosity. Spot and I lead the way, but I had no clue to where I was going.
*********
He lead the three of us to a resturaunt called 'Tibby's'. The Newsies were
very intersted in us, cause we were...so different. My hunger pains were
clouding my mind of every body watching me and thinking odd things. Hell
I would be thinking odd things too if three teenage girls wearing Steve
Madden, Paris Blues, L.E.I.'S, and Mudd fell or what ever out of nowhere
and was walking the streets with a bunch of newsies.
We sat down, at a table towards the back. I was next to Spot who imediatly
put his arm around me, with a proud smile.
"Oooooo." Tara smiled as she sat down next to Blink, who shyly slipped his
arm around her shoulders. She blushed and smiled at him.
"Oooooooo." I teased back at her and she blushed even more. A tall man
came over to us and handed each of us beer. The sky grew darker and we all
laughed at Race who kept loseing his money to me.
"She's a regular." Spot said with a smile and kissed my cheek. Race looked
at him. I handed him back his money.
"Ah Race it's a game... that I just happened to be an expert at. Here is your
money." Race took the money from me and the boys all looked at me
like I was crazy. Spot grinned and gave them all stern looks.
"Hey leave her alone. Me goil happens to be an expert gambler." I looked at
him and toyed with him.
"Who said I was your goil?" I loved this guy, toying with him was
entertaining, but he caught on and threw it up in my face.
"I did and what I say goes, got that?"
"Oh really?"
"Yes really." We got closer to each others face. Now we were nose to nose.
"Maybe I don't wanna be your girl."
"Maybe I wanna kiss ya." I smiled.
"Go ahead!" I said as if I was daring him to do something he didn't want to
do, but he did, and he kissed me. The others started to yell and holler. I held
onto Spot's lapels keeping him there for as long as I could. But I eventually
had to come up for air.
He got up from the booth, still holding my hand, and pulled me up with him.
He put his arms around my waist and kissed me again. The others yelled
once more.
"Get a room." Katie yelled and the others laughed.
"Maybe we will." The guys all laughed, and I pulled Spot's hand. He did
alittle one of those Army Navy salute things, and tripped when I pulled him.
The others laughed as we stumbled out the door.
**********
Spot and I laughed hysterically. We walked around Central Park just
enjoying each others company. He was very funny when he wanted to be,
especially the way he told me about the strike, which he was doing again for
about the hundredth time. I still laughed though.
"So I said...'yer honah, I object!' Then he said,'On what grounds?' and I said
'On the grounds of Brooklyn yer honah!'" I laughed once again, it was about
the sixth time I had heard that story.
I changed the subject.
"So where are you from Kayla?" spot asked putting his arms around my
shoulders. I leaned closer to him. The air was getting thinner and it was
starting to get misty and foggy out.
"1999." I said. Spot laughed and shook his head.
"I meant what place?" He smiled. I had partially explained my clothes and
my disc man in my back pack.
"Oh, well I live in New Jersey, but I'm from California." It got cooler and I
got closer into Spot's arms. I rested my head on his shoulder; my face next
to his cheek. He smelled good.
He looked down at me, shooting a smile that gave me chills of pleasure. I
pulled his head down and kissed him, he seemed alittle shocked about my
reaction, but deepened the kiss.
My head was spinning, and I felt like I was on cloud nine.
Something furry touched my leg, and I screamed scarring Spot. He looked
around like he was about to kill someone. We saw a small squirrel running
up a tree and laughed.
I shook my head and we walked back to the Lodging House.
Everyone was playing poker when we walked in. Tara and Katie looked at
me with grins. I shook my head and they fround. I lifted my eyebrows when
I saw Blink's arm around Tara, she smiled shyly and blushed. Katie sat next
to David, they looked over at each other every few seconds.
Jack and alot of the others shot Spot the same questionable look and he
shook his head no. I walked over to the poker table and smiled.
"Can I play?" I asked slyly. The others looked up at me and folded to deal in
a new hand. I had beat almost every one of them. The only person who
could beat me was Spot and Katie.
"Naw I was just playing with you, keep playin'." I said and yawned. Spot
and Jack noticed.
"Hey guys time fer bed." Jack said and collected the cards. There were a few
moans, but every body got up and walked upstairs.
I watched as everybody got into the bunks. There weren't any extra. Spot
noticed and motioned for me to follow him. Blink came over and offered to
share his bed with her. Katie went to the Jacob's house with David.
The bed Spot and I were sharing was in the far corner. He pushed it so that
it was against the wall. I climbed in, taking the side against the wall. He got
in right after, and screamed for someone to turn off the lights.
They went off, and it was dark, really dark. I could feel Spot's legs against
mine and felt him turn over towards me. I could feel his breath against my
face, so I knew he was close to me.
I felt his hand going up my leg, over my shoulder, until he found my chin.
He traced ny lips with his fingers. I took his hand in mine ,and kissed his
fingertips. He played footsie with me, and played with my hair. I unbuttoned
the buttons on his shirt, and he got frustrated trying to figure out how to get
off my bikini top, which had served as a bra. I undid it for him.
He kissed me sofly on the lips, I shivered. He must have felt me shudder
because he scooted closer to me. He was now on top of me, kissing me like
he was starving. Deeper, the kiss got deeper and deeper. My shirt
mysteriously came off and my jeans were unbuttoned, Spots shirt and pants
fell on the floor ages ago. We were wrapped up in each other. The others
had dissapeared. The dark blanketed them, and the snores made it hard for
people to hear any noises that would be comming from us. We were being
quiet. (If you want me to go into detail on what will happen, e-mail me and
I'll get it to you. Other than that I want to kinda keep it R.)
*********
I woke up intangled with Spot. He was looking at me, and smiling. I looked
up to see Tara and Katie looking at me with devilish grins. There were
whistles and hoots coming from around the room.
Jack, Blink, and Mush walked over to the bed. Spot and I got up. Tara
grabbed my armk and pulled me over into a corner.Blink looked at her
lovingly. I looked at her, one eyebrow up, and my hands across my chest.
"I did it." She said quietly.
"Huh?" I asked.
"Did what?" She started to smile and blush. I caught on to what she was
getting at.
"No, you!" I practically screamed. She claped a hand on my mouth and
nodded. Spot came over and wrapped an arm around my waist. David and
Katie were talking with Blink. Tara smiled at Spot and went over to Blink.
"I'm going to woik." Spot said softly in my ear. I clutch his arms tigher
around me. He turned me around to face him. I smiled at him.
"I'm gonna see what kind of trouble I can get myself into." Spot kissed me. I
felt a dark cloud come over my sunshine. We weren't in our time. I had to
get Katie and Tara and me back to 1999. Katie has a boyfriend there! I
pulled away from Spot.
"I'll see you later." I said as best as I could.. He nodded and left with Jack. I
pulled Tara and Katie away from David and Blink.
"What?" Katie asked.
"Hate ta break it to ya, but the men were kissing are over a hundred years
old." Katie crossed her arms over her chest.
"No there not they're 18." I looked at Katie, and mocked her stance.
"Yeah, they're 18, in 1899..." Tara interrupted me.
"She's right they are over a hundred." Katie loolked at the floor in
agreement. No matter how much we wish Spot, Blink, and David were 18,
they weren't. We didn't belong there.
"So we get back to 99." Tara said sadly. I nodded and looked at Katie. She
nodded reluctantly.
"Can we stay just for today?" Katie asked.
"Yeah, tonight we leave."
"Fine." Katie said sadly and walked away.
"She really likes it here." Tara said.
"Who dosen't?'
"You gonna miss Spot?" She asked.
"You gonna miss Blink?" I asked her.
"Yeah." I smiled at her and we walked out of the lodging house.
"There's your answer."
*********
"Shhh!!" Katie whispered at Tara who almost knocked over a bottle full of
water.
"I'm sorry! Jesus~It's dark!" She whispered back. I opened the window to
the second story bunk room, and stepped out onto the fire escape. We
quietly climbed down the escape and jumped onto the side walk.
We took off full speed, to Queens.
We stopped every few seconds to look around and see if we were going in
the right direction.
After alittle while I started to get the feeling that we were being followed.
We ran faster.
"Hey, Hey!" I heard someone screaming in the back of my mind. Katie and
Tara started to quickin their pace.
There were whistles blowing in the distance. Then there was the sound of
hooves galloping on cobblestone.
"Stop! Hold it right there." The hooves we getting closer to us, then it was
right behind me. I looked back to see a cop, holding his night stick above
my head. He swung it and...
**********
I woke with a spliting head ache. I sat up and looked around. Katie was
coming to. I crawled over pieces of broken wood and plaster, to her.
She looked up at me, and then around.
"We back?" She asked holding her head. I looked around. Failing to notice.
We sure as hell were. I nodded. Tara moaned and sat up. She looked at us
and then around the room.
"Back huh?" She asked Katie and I nodded.
"Hey!" A voice yelled from behind us. We looked back to see New Jeresy's
finest behind us.
"Ah shit." I moaned and helped Katie stand.
"Your not s'posed to be here." He said. I nodded.
"Yeah we know." I said.
"I'm gonna have to take you three in." Tara looked over at me and crossed
her arms. I smiled at her.
"It was worth it." I said to her and Katie and I grinned. I picked up my back
pack. The three police officers hand cuffed us and we walked back to the
ferry to be taking to New Jersey. I smiled at the thoughts of Spot. Katie and
Tara were also smiling and I knew they knew it was worth it.
The End.
