Spot's Evil Twin
By: Key
I’m tough, so why do I always look over my shoulder, fearing the moment when he jumps out and surprises me? The answer is simple really, when he left, I became all powerful, every newsie in New York feared me, well except my friends, but I loved the power. Also being the handsome guy I am, most of the girls in New York have loved me since day one. Now that I had this power, I never want it taken away, but I know, that someday it will.

"Hey Conlon, where’s ya been?" I heard Jack’s distinctive voice float above all the rest. I stopped polishing my cane to talk to him.
I shrugged, and looked down at my cane, which shone brightly under the sun. "I’se been helpin’ Myst move inta da Lodgin’ House in Harlem."
Jack nodded, and leaned up against a wooden post. "Ta tell ya da truth, Conlon, I didn’t think dat you and Myst would last dis long, considerin’ dat you’se neva had a goil longa dan two weeks."
I laughed, and took out my sling shot. The sling was broken, so I began to fix it, only to have my attention diverted by seeing the familiar face of Blondie. "Damn, I thought I told ‘er ta stop comin’ ‘ere."
Jack turned around, and frowned when he saw Blondie advancing towards us. "Dat goil neva gets enough of ya does she? How many time have ya told ‘er ta stop beggin’ ta get back wid ya?"
"Too many, dat’s all I can say." I turned to Blondie, who was now closer, "Blondie, why you’se ‘ere again? I thought I told ya ta stop comin’ ‘ere and beggin’ ta get back wid me. I’se like Myst now, not you, understand?"
She looked at me with green eyes that seemed to hang down at the sides, like a dogs. ‘Oh no,’ I thought. ‘She’s givin’ me da puppy eyes again.’ I looked down, not wanting to make eye contact. Every time she came to talk to me, she gave me the ‘puppy dog’ eyes, and she knew I had a soft spot when ever she looked me with those eyes.
"Listen Spot, you do not realize how much I like you, understand? Ever since I laid eyes on you, I knew I could like no one else, cause you stole my heart. All I’m asking is for one more chance with you, to prove that you’re the only one I care about."
"Listen, Blondie, You’se had yo’ chance wid me, an’ I’se didn’t like it, so dat’s why I broke up wid ya. An’ besides, you’se too clingy, I need space, an’ I didn’t get it when I was wid you."
"Please Spot, give me one more chance. Break up with Myst, she doesn’t appreciate you like I do. Please Spot." Her eyes held a pleading that I could not ignore, so I had to hang my head again, her eyes burning holes into the top of my head.
I took a deep breath, and tried to calm my anger, not wanting to blow up at her. "Blondie, I’se wid Myst cause I like Myst, not ‘cause I jist want a goilfriend. If I jist wanted a goilfriend, I’d be back wid ya. So, me answer is no, an’ Every time ya come ta visit me, askin’ if I’d go back out wid cha, da answer will always be da same, no, understand me?"
She nodded slowly, turning to leave, not wanting me to see the hurt that I had just caused her. I started to say something, to tell her I still cared about her, but just as a friend, nothing more, but then she would continue to bug me, saying that if I could like her as a friend, I could like her as more.
"Hey, Conlon, she really does like ya, ya know?" I had totally forgotten that Jack was still there, and I only then remembered when he spoke up. I nodded, and turned back to polishing my cane. "Hey, I’ll see ya later, alright?" I looked at him, and smiled, before going back to my work.

The next morning, I woke up early, and headed over towards Harlem, to see Myst. I washed my face, and headed out towards Harlem. As I walked, I thought about my relationship with Myst. I had met her when I had visited Harlem, to see my sister, Force. As I neared the lodging house, I heard Myst’s distinctive voice.
"I really like Sailor, but Spot’s like in love with me, so I don’t know what to do. Should I tell him that Sailor and I have been secretly seeing each other behind his back?" She was asking someone. As I rounded the corner, she came into view, and gasped when she saw me.
"Ya don’t have ta tell me Myst, I’se already know!" I walked up to her, and yanked the locket off from around her neck. "I’se nevah want ta see ya again, alright?" I stormed away, my eyes stinging. I thought I had loved her, but I guess I was wrong. I had no clue as to where I was going, but soon I found myself out in front of the Manhattan lodging house. Just then Jack and Mush and the rest of the boys came out, some kept on going, but Jack and Mush stopped when they saw my red eyes.
"What is it, Conlon?" Jack asked, walking with me towards the Distribution center.
"Myst, had been seein’ Sailor, da leadah o’ da Boury, behind me back!" I choked out, looking down at the dirt road.
"Oh, Conlon, I’se know how much ya like Myst!" Jack said comforting me the best he could. I shrugged off his comforting hand on my back, and walked back to Brooklyn, looking at my feet the whole way.

Twyla Finlay looked up as her eyes caught the first glimpse of New York City. She’d been walking for five days, and traveling for two weeks. She had been searching for Garren, finally getting a lead on to where he was. She quickened her pace to a fast walk, then started running towards the city, not wanting to look back. As she neared the city, her eyes reflected the light from the buildings, and her lips curved into a small smile. Now, if only Garren will actually be here! Twyla thought, fiddling with the key around her neck. Her mother had given her the key, told her that it had belonged to her Great-Great many times Great Uncle when he had first come over from England. It was the key to a chest that had been long lost. Twyla never took the key off, never wanting to.
She entered Manhattan with a new hope. A hope to find Garren. She walked around, her long dress dusty and dirty from the long trip. She never was the richest person in the world, but her family had made it by. Suddenly, she spotted someone very familiar, and her heart skipped a beat, as she walked up to them, and tapped them on the shoulder.
"Francis Sullivan, you sure have grown!" Twyla smiled as Francis registered who she was.
"Twyla, what... what’re ya doin’ heah? I’se thought dat you’se lived in Maine?" He asked, hugging her tightly. Then he whispered in her ear, "I ain’t Francis no more. I’se Jack Kelly!" Twyla nodded, and flipped her hair back behind her shoulders.
"I’m looking for Garren, do you know where he is?" Twyla asked, after hugging Jack. He shook his head, but then stopped.
"He’s da leadah o’ da Brooklyn newsies. Spot’s what dey call ‘im now!" Jack said, and pointed Twyla in the direction of Brooklyn.
She nodded, and thanked Jack, hugged him one more time, and headed out towards Brooklyn. Garren, maybe I will find you after all!!! She thought, breaking into a slow jog.

I paced the docks, thinking about Myst. And my supposed friend Sailor. I had liked Myst a lot, then she had gone and done this to me. I was so into my thoughts that I didn’t see a figure creep up behind me, and cover my eyes with her hands.
"Guess who, Garren!" A female’s voice called out in a sing song voice. I stopped breathing. It couldn’t be, it couldn’t.
"Twyla, is dat you?" I asked, my voice shaking. The hands released my eyes, and I spun around to find myself facing Twyla Finlay. I smiled, and scooped her up in my arms. I kissed her cheek over and over and over again, tears of joy escaping my tightly closed eye lids. After all the joy, a look of pure terror came over her face, and I turned to find myself facing him.
Him. That’s all I care to wish to refer him as. Him is the meaning of evil. Him is the feeling of terror. Him is the meaning of Hell.
"Hello Garren, long time no see, little brother!" He said, walking towards me and Twyla. "And hello Twyla. You’re still young, and beautiful, and weak. I will enjoy coming after you!"
"Gabriel!" I whispered, hating the sound of the name. He started clapping, taking another step towards me. Twyla and I stepped back, not blinking. We were scared to close our eyes, and we were scared to open them.
"Garren, Garren, Garren. You sure have grown up, since, how old were you when you tried to get rid of me. Oh yes, ten." He smiled at he wickedly, a smile so pure of evil. "And Twyla," he went on, "You’re still scared of me. Still always rubbing that stupid little key. You two are pathetic. I will enjoy crushing you, like I did a long time ago." With that, he turned to leave and walked slowly out of our sight.
"God, dis is what I was scared of!" I muttered, releasing my grip on Twyla’s shoulders. "Did you bring him here?" I asked suddenly, gazing at Twyla. She shook her head, and looked down.
"Garren, I didn’t know he was going to follow me, I seriously didn’t!" She muttered, not looking up, not wanting to face me. Finally she did looked up, her eyes glazed with tears. She knew my life story, she knew what had happened between me and Gabriel. Now I only hoped I could try to stop him like I did a long time ago. Stick him in a mental institution or something.
"Sshhh, hush up, it’s alright. You’se didn’t know wheah he was or dat he’d be followin’ ya," I patted her head, hugging her again. She closed her eyes, and I soothed her to sleep.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
"Boys, you’se gotta loin somethin’!" I said, barging into Tibby’s, Twyla at my side. The boys looked up, when they saw me come in. After all, I am the leader of Brooklyn.
"Yeah, what is it, Conlon?" Jack Kelly asked, pulling up a chair next to the table I sat down in. I looked at him seriously, as if to say What I’m about to say, you might think Crazy, but it dead serious.
I cleared my throat, and hoped for the best. "I’se got a twin brudder, an’..." I paused, making sure I had everyone’s attention. "An’ he’s evil." I held up my hand to silence anyone that would dare to speak out. I love my power. "Now I know what you’se all thinkin’, dat I’se belong in da crack house. How can a twin brudder be evil? Is dat even possible. Let me explain."
I got up on a table, making sure everyone could see me. "A long time ago, me an’ me brudder we born, I’se was always da one dat nevah did anythin’ ta upset me parents. Gabriel on da udder hand, was always gettin’ inta trouble, causin’ injuries right an’ left. Den, it started. Gabriel came home wid a book from da library, ‘bout devils, witches an’ all dat bad stuff. He conjured up some stuff, an’ became dis big all powerful devil, an Allie ta Satan, I think.
"He started ta come home late at night, mumblin’ stuff ‘bout curses, an’ soon, me parents died, from some undiscovered disease. I was left alone in da woild wid Him. I tried ta hoit him, but he was too powerful. Den I met Twyla heah, an’ she knew some stuff ‘bout devils an’ such, an’ togetha we tried ta beat ‘im. He was too powerful, we only managed ta throw him inta some other woild for the time being. Now he’s back, an’ he’s gonna make yo’ lives hell!" I jumped down off the table and walked over to Twyla, who was looking intently at me.
I think it took everyone a while for the information to sink I to their brains, but as soon as it did, a frown or a smile came over there faces, and they all looked at me.
Blink, who had his mouth set in a straight line spoke up. "You’se serious, Conlon? Is dis Gabriel really dangerous?" I nodded, and I think he knew that I was serious.
"Spot, I’se believe ya! We’s gotta try ta stop ‘im. Has he got anyone wid ‘im?" Jack asked, getting up and walked over to me.
"I don’t know, he might. But if he does, be careful, dey’s got powers!" I said, and I spit in my hand and shook with Jack. From that time on, everyday we spent trying to think of a plan to stop Gabriel and whoever he was with.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Gabriel Conlon pushed the big warehouse doors apart, and looking into the dreary looking room, filly with crates and old machines.
"Hello, is anyone in here?" He called out, making sure no one was there. When he was sure the place was empty, he dropped the bag he was carrying, and began to set up. As soon as all the candles were lit, he began casting his partner spell. "From East to West, send me one whose best. From East to West, put the good to the test. Makes what’s from medieval, and turn them to Evil" A bluish green smoke filled the room, and when it was settles, a pretty girl with jet black hair, and icy blue eyes emerged from the smoke, and smiled at Gabriel.
"Hello, My name’s Marble. You’se ordered me?" She smiled, and held out her hand. Gabriel sat back, and studied his work. Satan told him he would give him a beautiful beast, and he sure did. Marble was a piece of art.
"Yes yes yes. You must help me destroy him!" Gabriel pointed to the picture of Spot and Twyla suspended in a cloud of black smoke. Marble nodded, and began their plan on destroying Twyla and Spot.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
"An’ den, we start doin’ da spell, an’ he’s trapped in da amulet," Jack said, looking at me and Twyla. She nodded, and pointed out something on the map, as Race pulled me aside and asked me about Gabriel. Then, she entered.
She was beautiful, but I knew right away she was working with Gabriel. She had evil written all over her face. She had jet black hair and icy blue eyes, and was so beautiful. I knew she was deadly, evil, but I couldn’t take my eyes off her.
"Hello, Garren!" She smiled, and ran he fingertips over the extent of my jaw line. A shiver of anxiety surged through me, as I looked into her hypnotizing eyes.
"How...how did ya know me name?" I asked, afraid to know the answer. Marble just laughed, and looked around the room. The door swinging closed behind her made her focus her gaze on the female that had just entered the building.
"Cowgoil, you’se back!" Jack said, jumping up out of his seat, and hugging Cowgoil with all his might. Cowgoil smiled, and hugged Jack back tightly. I looked at Key and smiled. She really was great. She was the best girl I had ever met.
"My foist day back an’ me bruddah dudn’t even know dat I’se heah!" Flame’s voice pierced my thoughts, and a huge grin spread over my face. I hugged Flame, glad that she was back from Maryland. Her and Cowgoil had gone to Maryland because their friends were in trouble down there.
"Well, I’m glad that everyone’s back together. More people to kill, but such little time! Oh well, I’ll try my best! Since there are more you people, Gabriel and I will have to bring ultimate forces!" Marble laughed and walked out of Tibby’s, throwing me a smug look. Cowgoil and Flame looked at us like we were crazy.
"I’se got an evil bruddah dat wants ta kill me!" I said matter of factly. Flame and Cowgoil just nodded, not quite believing my story. We headed back to the lodging house to tell Flame and Cowgoil about our plan to kill Gabriel.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
"Dammit, they were supposed to come back this soon!" Gabriel yelled out, his voice echoing in the empty warehouse. Marble looked at him with her icy blue eyes, thinking.
"Crivelli, my sister wanted to come with me, but I said that she couldn’t! Do you want to summon her?" Marble asked, sitting down on a crate. Gabriel nodded, and ran his hands through his hair.
Flame and Cowgoil posed the most threat to him. They were the ones with all the power, but he didn’t think they knew it yet. Both of them combined could destroy Gabriel, and he couldn’t let that happen. I’ll capture them, and they’ll be no use to Spot and Key and everyone else! He thought, putting his plan into action.
"Marble summon Crivelli, I have some work to do in Manhattan," Gabriel smiled slyly, an headed out towards Manhattan.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
"Cowgoil, it’s so good ta have ya back!" Jack said, stroking Cowgoil’s hair. She smiled sleepily at him, and laid her head down on her arm. He kissed her and laid his head back on his pillow.
Flame and Spot sat down on his bunk, and talked about their childhood. "Gabriel’s bein’ back is horrible, Spot. I’se don’t know how ta stop ‘im!"
Spot shook his head, and hung it. "Flame, I’se been meanin’ ta tell ya somethin’ You’se got mag..." Spot was cut off by Gabriel standing in the doorway.
"Spot, me and Flame need a little chat, sister dear. Now, please come with me! You too Cowgoil!" And as if any a trance, they followed Gabriel out the door, and back to Brooklyn.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
"Flame, sister dear we need to talk. It seems that you can not participate in the little party in destroying me. You must stay here, and help Marble conjure up Crivelli. As for you Cowgoil, you and Flame need to stay here for a while." Gabriel smiled slyly, motioning to Marble to come collect Flame and Cowgoil. As soon as they had them tied up, they started towards the fire that Marble had built.
"From the sun in the sky, to the water in the rivers. Bring me one that will be true to deliver..." Gabriel and Marble chanted, causing a hazy purplish green smoke. Crivelli, a slender fiery haired girl appeared with a blonde haired girl.
"Welcome to my world, Crivelli. Who is this pretty little girl you have brought with you?" Gabriel asked, walking over to where Crivelli and the girl stood.
"Gabriel, so nice to meet you. This is Dot Conlon, Flame’s underworld sister, more evil to the core than you can believe. I decided that this would be a good time to exercise her powers. She’s still in training." Crivelli spoke in a hushed whisper. Marble walked up to Gabriel, and put her arm around his shoulder, drawing him closer.
"We don’t have much time, we must destroy them by midnight of tomorrow night!" Gabriel said, and they all sat down and started to prepare.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Jack paced the room nervously, his eyes darting back and forth between the door and the floor in front of him. I watched Jack, knowing what he was nervous about. Cowgoil and Flame.
"Jack, dey’s alright, I know. Gabriel has no reason ta hoit ‘em," I tried to comfort him with my words, but they wouldn’t do. He was too nervous and worried to pay heed to my words, that seemed to never register into his mind.
Jack shook his head, and looked at the door again, hearing footsteps on the stairs. He waited silently, and watched the door open, to find Flame and Cowgoil standing there. Or so he thought. Crivelli and Dot had transformed themselves into Flame and Cowgoil, as part of their plan.
"Jack, I’m sorry it took so long. That nice boy Gabriel was giving us tea and crumpets!" Cowgoil said sarcastically, sidling up to Jack, and wrapping her arms around his neck. He hugged her back longingly, glad to have finally gotten Cowgoil back. I watched as Flame walked over to me. Something was different about, but I couldn’t quite place it. I took her hands, and looked at them. The nails were stubs, seems like Flame had been having some nervous tension lately.
"Spot, Gabriel, he tried... he tried to kill me!" Flame said a little too dramatically. When she noticed hat Crivelli was looking at her strange, she straightened herself up, and sat down on the bunk. "Spot, we need to talk. What were you going to tell me earlier?"
I had the biggest feeling of misplacement, so I decided to trick her. "Do you remember when we swam with mom and dad in the river?"
Flame smiled brightly, her icy green eyes shining. "Yes, it was so much fun, What was that, two years ago?"
I smiled back at her, before seizing her by the wrists, and yanking her off the bunk, "That never happened. Who are you, what do you want?" Flame looked scared, but soon lead me to the roof where she whispered that it would be safe.
"My name is Dot. Dot Conlon, I am the underworld twin sister of Flame. Gabriel has Flame and Cowgoil tied up right now. You must go and save them!" Dot urged, pushing me down the window. I hurried and ran down the stairs and out the door.
Dot smiled triumphantly, watching me run to help Flame and Cowgoil. She had completed her part of the plan, and soon Marble and Gabriel would do there.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
I ran god knows how fast to Brooklyn, knowing but not knowing where Gabriel was located. Finally I saw an eerie glow of yellow light coming from an old warehouse, and crept inside. What I saw amazed me, thinking that if I ever got out alive, I would remember every single detail. Every candle stick lit, every smell of burning I smelt.
Gabriel and another girl, a girl with jet black hair and icy blue eyes, so hard, so cold, were gathered around a fire, with which greenish red smoke was coming from, and purple and blue flames were licking at their faces. In the smoke, I saw myself, and Key, Key looking everywhere for me, Myself, right where I was: in the warehouse. Marble was the first to notice, and stared looking around for me, poking into every corner, checking here checking there. But she never found me. That is, until I jumped up and pounced on Gabriel, who since caught off guard had no idea how to get me off of him.
"Garren Garren Garren. When will you learn little brother? You are no match for me!" Gabriel smiled, twirling around and around me on his back. Well, this wasn’t part of the plan but I guess I could try to make it somehow! I thought, looking around the warehouse, in search of something I could use to defeat Gabriel. Of course, him being the smart one he is (that’s basically the only thing we have in common, besides looks, power, strength, height, etc.) He didn’t have anything out that I could use.
"Gabriel, why did ya send Dot an’ Crivelli ta da lodgin’ house?" I asked, still struggling to hold on to his back. I could feel Gabriel’s muscles tightening and tensing up with every move of his shoulder.
"Garren, you’re too stupid to see the answer right in front of you. I want you to do die, so that I will have all the power. Don’t worry, I will not you be forgotten. I will make sure every newsies in New York knows that you are the evil one of the family!" Gabriel laughed, his head titling back. I have to find a way out I thought. And fast!
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Marble entered the lodging house, as Gabriel had told her to, and walked quietly up the stairs. He could hear the voices coming from inside. She recognized Crivelli’s voice, and smiled. She was doing exactly what Gabriel had told her too.
She opened the door, and stopped when she saw every head in the place turn to face her. "Hello boys!"
"Hello, lady. May I take your coat?" Race asked, hypnotized by Marble. She was THE most gorgeous girl Race had ever seen, and probably everyone else. Marble nodded, and let Race take off her coat.
"I am Marble, and what are your names, handsome?" Marble asked, pulling out a chair from a desk, and sitting down, making every boys’ eyes’ watch her. One by one every newsie in the room introduced themselves, not taking their eyes off her.
"Well, now that we all know who each other is, let’s get down to business. You can’t let that scab Ga-Spot keep on bossing you all around. Quit his team, and join Gabriel’s. You’re efforts will be greatly rewarded..." Marble trailed off, letting each boy think about the reward that would get. But they all wanted one reward: Marble.
Each newsies nodded, still in a trance, and as Marble pulled her coat off the tree by the door, the all followed her out, and into the quiet streets on their way to disaster and destruction.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
"Gabriel, I brought the boys!" Marble called out as she entered the warehouse. Gabriel’s head popped from a book, and he smiled, slyly.
"Thanks so much Marble. You have been the most delightful companion!" Gabriel said, walking up to Marble, and wrapping one arm around her waist and pulling her to him. She smiled at him, her blue eyes flashing. He leaned down and kissed her, and she quickly responded. A loud clearing of the throat broke them apart, and they saw Crivelli and Dot with their arms crossed, tapping their feet.
"We need to put the plan into action!" Dot said, motioning towards the cauldron with yellow smoke coming out of it. Gabriel nodded, and took Marble by the hand and led her to the cauldron.
"Now, fellow newsies, Jack, Mush, Race, and everyone else. We must combine our strengths to destroy him" Gabriel pointed at me laying down on the floor all tied up. "Now, all chant with me, Fair is foul and foul is fair *authors note* I got this from Macbeth so no one sue me alright?~ Turn Garren’s life into despair!" *This parts not from Macbeth. All Key’s imagination* I saw Flame and Cowgoil stir in their corner, and I prayed that they would wake up and break the concentration of the group. I looked over at them again, no movement. I sighed, cold sweat running down my back. I was scared stiff. With all the power of Gabriel and his companions, plus Jack and all the rest of the newsies. A movement in the corner caught my eye and I looked over to find Flame sitting up and rubbing her head. She automatically looked over at me, and she smiled when she saw me sitting up, and looking at her.
"We have ta stop dem from concentratin’," she mouthed to me, nodding her head in the group’s direction. I smiled at her, and tried to think of a plan to get my hands untied. As long as the group kept their eyes closed shut, then we would be able to make a clean break. But that would still leave me in danger. I thought, and looked around once more, when I saw a hammer. I inched over to it, and picked it up between my hands, which were tied in front of me. I took the pointy end and started rubbing it against my tied hands. Instead of cutting the rope, I gave myself a nasty cut. I chucked the hammer over to Flame, to see if she could do anything with it. She looked at it, then her yes brightened and a small smirk spread across her face. When she smirks, I can see why people can tell that we’re related.
She found some excess rope and tied it to the handle of the hammer. Then she tossed the hammer a few inches away from the fire, making sure no one was watching her. Then after she was sure the hammer was heated enough, she dragged the hammer back to her, and laid it on the rope. The rope burned ad finally broke away, freeing her hands. She gave me a thumbs up, and untied her feet. Then she untied Cowgoil’s and gently tapped her check to wake her up. After a few minutes, she woke up, and Flame had to hold her mouth to keep from screaming when she saw Jack holding hands with Race and Mush. Key or Twyla (she got her nickname from always rubbing her key) was no where to be seen, Was probably gone when Marble came to take everyone away. Finally, she edged her way over to me, where I had been sitting patiently, waiting for her to burn through her ropes.
"Took ya long enough!" I whispered into her ear, as she was untiing the knot of the ropes. She looked at me sarcastically, and dropped to her knees from her kneeling position.
"Well sorry, I’se had ta git meself untied ‘fore I could git ya untied," she smiled at me, before standing up, pulling me and Cowgoil up with her. She nodded at me, then took me and Cowgoil by the hand and shouted at the top of her lungs, "Would ya stop da chantin’ already. It’s gettin’ on me noives!"
Gabriel looked up from his chanting, and frowned. "You’ve gotten free huh? Well, as soon as we’re done with this spell, you won’t be free for long." Gabriel took hold on Mush’s hand which he dropped, and started chanting again.
"That’s what ya think. Come on guys, start chantin’ wid me da counter spell! Lead the ones not to despair, but to a land that’s foul and fair!" We started chanting our eyes kept focus on Gabriel, and Marble, who were looking at each other, and nodding. We stopped chanting when we realized that it wasn’t working and went to plan B. Run. We started running, but were stopped. By Crivelli, who had suddenly popped up right in front of us.
"You aren’t going anywhere!" She smiled, and lunged at us. But we were too quick, and dodge her, and started running for the door, only to be stopped by Gabriel. Flame and Cowgoil, each went separate ways, leaving me to fend for myself. Remind me to thank them when I’m through! I thought, and started backing up.
"Now is this any way to thank a brother who you haven’t seen in a long time?" Gabriel asked, taking a step towards me. I took another step back, but for every step back, he took a step forward, so we weren’t getting anywhere. "Flame and Cowgoil don’t know their powers, so they can’t help you. The only way they’ll know their powers is if they somehow turn my spell against me, and that won’t happen. So, it’s look little brother, that you are stuck to defend for yourself. Hope you had a nice life!" He lunged towards me, but I duck and he hit a crate.
Suddenly, an idea hit me. "Flame, Cowgoil, find a mirrah!" I called out. I heard Flame’s faint voice off somewhere in the warehouse, and I hear Cowgoil’s voice somewhere in the warehouse too. I tried to lead Gabriel over to where I thought Flame was. Suddenly I found her, trying to fend off Dot, who was trying to push her against a crate, In her hand was a small piece of mirror, a piece which she had obviously gotten from a huge behind door mirror.
"Flame, you little weakling. You don’t know how useful you could be, but I must get rid of you," Gabriel said, and lifted up his right hand, and spoke in a light, wispy voice, "All that have been damned, send them to the never return land!" Flame scared help up the hand with the piece of mirror, as an instant reaction, and the mirror reflected the spell and sent it back ro Gabriel, who staggered back, and knocked his head on a crate. Just then, I saw the sun rising, signaling the end of the night. If Gabriel recovered we had 24 hours to stop him once again.
We stood there for about an hour, making sure Gabriel wouldn’t wake up. I walked back to the middle, where all the newsies stood, wondering where they were and how they got there. Jack most of all looked puzzled, looking at Crivelli, who still looked liked Cowgoil, and the real Cowgoil, who was standing right next to her. Finally, he chose the real Cowgoil, and Crivelli disappeared in an over exaggerated puff of smoke.
"Spot, can we talk?" I turned around to find Dot, behind me. I stepped back cautious.
"What?"
"Spot, I didn’t mean any harm. I couldn’t do any harm, I’m basically still in training and haven’t learned very many spells besides turning a person into a frog! So, I just wanted to make sure there were no hard feelings!" She spat on her hand, and held it out. I smiled at her and returned the spit shake.
"Did I miss all the action?" I heard Key’s voice behind me. I spun around, and wrapped my arms around her, kissing her softly on the cheek, "Wow, what a welcome! Is he gone?"
I nodded, and held her by my side. Then I leaned down and kissed her softly on the lips. "I’ve been wantin’ ta do dat evah since you’se come back!" She smiled and kissed me again, deepening it.
The I saw her. Marble was still there. She looked at me, a look of pure hatred on her face. The I saw tears. She was crying because she had loved Gabriel surprisingly. I walked over to her and smiled.
"I’se know ya liked Gabriel, but he was evil, more evil dan you’se could evah be. Sos, forget ‘bout ‘im, an’ go back where ya came from!" A tear dropped from her chin, and landed on crossed arms. Then a aqua puff of smoke, and her beautiful face was gone.
I walked back over to Flame and Key and wrapped my arms around their shoulders. "I wondah what da headlines would be ‘bout taday!" they laughed, and we walked out of the warehouse, back to our normal lives. And so did everyone else.
