Just You And Me

By: Echo

I looked up as someone walked in the door, a little disappointed when I realized it wasn’t Jack. We were going out tonight and he was supposed to meet me at Tibby’s five minutes ago. Dutchy smiled at me. “Hey Echo. Jack told me to tell ya dat he’s gotta go ta Brooklyn an’ he’ll make it up to ya.”

I nodded a little sadly. That was the fifth date he had postponed. “All right, thanks for telling me.”

Dutchy shrugged. “Ice said da goils is havin’ a poka’ game in Queens if ya wanna go.”

I smiled. “Oh, I almost forgot! See ya round Dutchy!”

He waved as I walked out. By the time I got to Queens, the poker game had already started. “Echo! I didn’t think ya were comin’!” Kit said as I walked in.

I shrugged. “Don’t have anything better to do.”

Psycho looked up slowly. “Jack have to go to Brooklyn again?”

I nodded. “Yep. So, is this everyone?”

Shadow shrugged. “I guess. Ice went out with Blink, Star is wit Scribbles, Lily is supposed to show up, according to Psycho, you an’ Brooklyn weren’t comin’, but you’re heya.”

I looked around. “So, Kit, Velvet, Violet, Psycho, you an’ me…. Is Lily always this late?”

Kit laughed. “Usually. She’ll show up eventually.”

“I’m here!” Lily yelled from the door.

I nodded. “Yeah, we heard you.”

Shadow smiled. “Alright, enough talk! On with the game!”

We stayed up playing poker rather late. Some of the girls stayed there, but Psycho and I walked back to Manhattan.

I smiled at Spot as he walked into the Lodging House the next day. Things hadn’t been going too great in Brooklyn, and Spot hadn’t been by in a while. He immediately walked over to Brooklyn and gave her a nice long kiss.

Jack looked at me from across the room and shrugged. For the past few weeks, we hadn’t been able to get any time to ourselves. Now the guys were crowed around him, Race wanted him to get into the poker game, Mush wanted some advice about a girl, the list went on forever. But I guess that’s what being a leader is like.

Eventually, part of the guys joined Race’s poker game. The others Jack managed to stall and he walked across the room to me. “Long time no see, Jack.”

He smiled and wrapped his arms around me. “Yeah, it’s impossible ta get away from dose guys.”

I laughed. “Well, you are the leader.”

He smiled. “Yeah, but I should ‘ave time for me goil… and I got dis idea.”

I gasped dramatically. “Oh no, not an idea!”

He frowned. “It’s a good idea! We ‘aven’t had any time alone in the past two weeks. When we even get within arms length of each otha’, da guys are always dere, whistlin’ an’ crackin’ jokes.”

I rolled my eyes. “You think I don’t know that? They won’t leave me alone about the roof and that was a long time ago!”

He laughed. “Well I was thinkin’-“

“I doubt it.”

He glared at me fondly. “Don’t tease me. I was thinkin’, what if we waited till all a da guys was sleepin’, and den snuck up on da roof. We’d be togetha’, an’ all a dose morons will be asleep so dey can’t make any smart*** remarks. It’d be just you an’ me.”

I smiled. “That is a wonderful idea.”

Brooklyn’s POV
I smiled as Spot walked up to me. He glared at all of the guys trying to draw him into the poker game. He kissed me and then pulled me away from the other guys. “How bout tonight you’ an’ me go up on da roof ta be alone, afta’ da otha’ guys is asleep? It’d be just me an’ you.”

Echo’s POV
I pulled the covers up and pretended to try and sleep when I heard Brooklyn walking down the hall. I waited until I thought she was sleeping, and climbed onto the roof as quietly as possible. When I got up there, there was a cloud covering the moon but I saw a silhoit of someone staring off the edge of the building and walked over there. Before I knew it, I was being kissed. I wrapped my arms around Jack’s neck… and that’s when I realized Jack wasn’t wearing a cowboy hat… and there was a string around his neck instead of a red bandanna, a string kind of like Spot kept his key on. That’s when I realized I was kissing Spot.

I’m guessing that’s about the time he realized who I was, because we both jumped apart like we had been struck by lightening. I wrinkled my nose in disgust and glared at him. “What are you doing up here?!”

He glared back. “What are you doing up here?”

I groaned. “I can’t believe I just kissed you.”

He seemed insulted. “It wasn’t dat bad, ya just don’t wanna admit dat I’m a good kissa’.”

I groaned. “Not the kiss itself you moron… the thought of kissing you is what’s so disgusting. Not only are you unbearably egotistical, but you’re like a really annoying older brother to me. Yuck.”

He frowned. “Oh, yeah… that’s uh… not somethin’ I wanted ta think about. Sides, ya neva’ told me why you was up heya.”

I blushed. “I was gonna meet Jack. What about you?”

He looked at me suspiciously before responding. “Brooklyn.”

I glared at him. “Don’t even think it. We weren’t going to do anything.”

He nodded. “Whatever ya have ta tell yerself.”

I started to say something but stopped. “Hey Spot?”

He looked up. “What?”

“If you were supposed to meet Brooklyn, and I was supposed to meet Jack, and we’re together…. Where are Jack and Brooklyn?”

We both looked over at the other side of the roof where we saw two people, and then at each other. I cleared my throat uncomfortably. “Well, I guess that answers that question. Maybe we should tell them?”

He smiled a little as we started to walk over to where Brooklyn and Jack were kissing. Spot cleared his throat. “Cowboy, get away from me goil.”

Jack looked up, very confused by that statement. “What?” He looked at me as I laughed, then at Brooklyn, then Spot, then Brooklyn, and then me again. “Brooklyn?”

I nodded. “Yeah, Brooklyn. You found Brooklyn, Spot found me.”

He seemed kind of confused. “Well… I guess it ain’t just me an’ you.”

Spot laughed. “We just can’t win dis one, can we Jack?”

I shook my head. “Brooklyn, I don’t know how you can stand that.”

Brooklyn and Jack stared at me. “What?” They asked simultaneously.

I grimaced. “Kissing Rover… I’m going to have nightmares for the rest of my life you know. Psychological damage.”

Jack glared at Spot. “What’s she talkin’ bout?”

Spot frowned. “I’d ratha’ not think about it.”

Jack looked at me and I shook my head. “It’s not my fault you aren’t Spot! If you had been standing on the other side of the roof I never would have kissed him… don’t get mad at me, I’ve suffered enough already.”

Spot smiled evilly. “Aw. Poor Echo.”

I glared at him. “I don’t know what you’re thinking, but stop. I don’t like that look on your face. What are you thinking?”

“I think ya need a hug.” He laughed and hugged me.

I screamed and struggled until he let go. “That was not funny. In fact, I feel sick.”

Jack smiled as he wrapped his arms around my waist and kissed me. “Betta’?”

I nodded. “Yeah, lots better.”

Spot cleared his throat as Jack leaned in and kissed me again. I smiled. ”Jack, Brooklyn and Spot are still up here.”

Jack shrugged. “I guess this calls for another IOU. Sorry Echo.”

I shrugged and started walking to the fire escape. “No big deal.”

He sighed and kissed me good night before going inside.

The next day, Jack sold with the guys. He wasn’t at Tibby’s at lunch. Blink said he had some business to take care of. I shrugged and decided to go back to the Lodging House and read a book. When I walked into the room I shared with Brooklyn, I saw a note on the bed. I smiled and picked it up.

Echo,
I no I ain’t been able ta spend much time wit ya, an’ I figure it’s time to cash in all a dose IOU’s. Da guys can take care a demselves fer one night.
Luv,
Jack

I smiled as Jack walked in the door holding a white rose. “So Echo, ya ready ta go?”

“Where to?”

He shrugged. “Anywhera’ yer heart desires.”

I laughed. “Are you going to be there this time?”

He nodded and wrapped his arms around me. “Wouldn’t miss it for da woild.”

“Well, then I don’t care where we go.”

He smiled and kissed me. “Okay, an dis time it’ll really be just you an’ me.”
