Queens of New York

Part 1, Newsies

"Yeah! Schools out! Newsies time!" I said jumping out of my chair that Friday afternoon. When I caught up to my friends Alivia, Miranda, and Eryn, I was already singing "King of New York."

" What are we going to do today?" asked Alivia.

"Lets see, what do we do every Friday?" I asked jokingly.

"Watch Newsies?" she guessed, way to seriously.

"Ding, ding, ding, tell her what she's won." I said mockingly.

"A pair of new shoes with matching laces" Eryn said.Which got me singing, again. Soon they had joined in and we didn't stop singing until we were at Alivia's house.

When we got there we went down to the basement to watch, what else, Newsies. Miranda and I went upstairs to make popcorn while Eryn and Alivia rewound the tape and watched the previews.

We had a typical Friday. We pigged out on popcorn and soda while watching our, well at least mine and Allicia's, favorite movie in the world. By the time Pulitzer was deciding to jack up the price, we were running out of popcorn. So Eryn and I did the only logical thing, fight over who got the last of it. After being told to be quiet for about the millionth time, we decided to go get some more popcorn. We were going upstairs, when the lights went out.

"Someone get a flashlight," I ordered.

"I can't," said Miranda," I don't know where they are."

"Alivia should, its her house, and anyway I don't know where they are, either," Eryn said.

Alivia didn't say anything. Soon I felt drops of water on me. It was raining?!

Part 2, New York

I knew we were outside because I could see the skyline of a city. But it wasn't Cincinnati, or a chili parlor either. We were somewhere familiar, we were on Newsies! Not really, it was New York, 1899. The sun started to go up and we saw newsies going out of a building, which we figured was the lodging house.

I went up to a newsie and told him that me and my friends were lost and we needed to get some money. He introduced himself as Mush, which I already knew because he looked like Aaron Lohr. In fact all the newsies looked the same. (They looked just as cute, if not more, as they had in the movie.)

I brought him over to where Eryn was standing, Miranda had gone up to Kid Blink, and Mush said he'd introduce us to all the newsies and teach us to sell papes.

When we got to Newsies Square I heard, "Gabriella, where are we?"

I looked up to see two of my friends. Amaca, who we call Brooklyn, because of her accent, and Kristie.

"New York, where'd ya think we was?" I said to Amaca.

Eryn was still stuck on meeting Mush. She had this goofy grin on her face and she was staring at him. It was so weird.

"Hey, Mush, how's it rolling?" asked Racetrack, stealing the saying from Spot.(I almost soaked him for that!)

"Hey, Race, meet Eryn, Gabriella, Miranda, and who are you two?"

"Brooklyn, nice ta meetcha," said Amaca.

"That's Kristie," I said because she was to busy looking around to notice she had been spoken to.

She didn't even notice that someone was walking right toward her, either. Miranda was about to yell a warning when, with a thump, Kristie and Jack Kelly were on the ground.

"Watch were your going!" the head of the Mannhattan newsies said angrily, then he walked away.

Soon we had been introduced to everyone. Becky was going to sell with Race. Kristie was going to sell with Jack, because "no one else could handle her". Miranda was going to sell with Blink. Eryn and I were going to sell with Mush, he got the two of us because no one else would take us, and he was the one to find us.

"Never fear, Brooklyn is here," said a very familiar voice, but it wasn't Amaca.

"Spot, how are..." Jack started.

"Who said you are Brooklyn, I'm Brooklyn," Amaca said.

"Amaca, don't start anything with Spot, he might hit you with..." Miranda stopped.

"A marble or something. I mean, well, he has a slingshot," I said, picking up where Miranda left off. I was very proud of myself for having so much self control. I hadn't run up to him, I just reminded myself that he wouldn't know about Newsies, but it was still hard.

"Wow, a slingshot I'm so scared."

"You should be remember when..." I kicked Eryn so she wouldn't talk about the movie. "When Gabriella was playing with Josh's slingshot and got him in the face. He had a black-eye for a month." I smiled, she was pretty good at ad-libbing.

"How do yous know my name?" Spot whispered, confused.

"Jack said it, " I whispered back, as quick as I could.

"You know how ta sell papes, right?" asked Mush.

"I've got an idea. You make up headlines and try to sell all your papes to people," Kristie said.

"Can ya make up any headlines? Ya can read right?" asked Jack.

"Of course. How about this for a headline. Say there's a trash fire by the emigration building and the sea gulls get scared. I could say 'Ellis Island in flames big confligration.' Or, ' Thousands flee in panic,' " I said.

"Who do ya sell to?" asked Race.

"Any banker, bum, or barber, they almost all know how to read," said Eryn, I tried not to laugh, but Miranda giggled.

Then we went to get our papes, I was about to buy some when Spot asked if I'd rather go back to Brooklyn with him. I, of course, said yes.

Part 3, Eryn and Mush

"How do ya know so much about being a newsie?" Mush asked.

"I've seen Newsies, um, on the street for, um, as long as I can remember," Eryn staggered to answer.

He figured that was probably true. She was turning into a really good newsie. It was like she had been doing it all her life.

Eryn looked at the date on one of the newspapers she was selling. August 13, 1899. After the strike.

"You guys went on strike not to long ago didn't you?" she asked.

"Yeah, how'd ya know?" Mush asked her.

"I saw Denton's article, in the Sun," she made up quickly.

Mush was the kind of guy who falls in love weekly. He had already forgotten about this weeks girlfriend. This was different. No other "goil" he had ever met had made him feel this way.

"Eryn where ya from?" he asked trying to learn all about her.

"Cincinnati," she answered.

"How'd ya get here?" he asked.

"Gabriella and I had wanted to for a while and so, I guess, we just came," she said. She started to feel bad about lying to him, then she reminded herself she hadn't been lying. She is from Cincinnati, and she and Gabriella had wanted to come. Well at least we had talked about what it would be like if they had been able to go. She just didn't tell him what year she was from, but he hadn't asked about that.

"Oh," he said, "Eryn you's got a weird name."

"And 'Mush' isn't a weird name?"

" Hey, its just a nickname."

"Hey, Mush, where's you's guys been," Snipeshooter yelled from across the street.

"Central Park, I dunno where we's going now," Mush yelled back.

"Can we go to The Bowery, or Bottle Alley, or maybe The Harbor?" asked Eryn.

"How do ya know so much about New Yawk," Mush asked.

"It's a song I've heard," she said and started singing "Carrying the Banner." She had just got to "Try central Park its guaranteed" when Mush said that it sounded like something Racetrack would say.

At that she started laughing, in fact, she laughed so hard she fell to the ground. He picked her up, obviously, confused. He asked if she was okay, but she never got to answer because he had pulled her into him, and was kissing her.

Part 4, Amaca and Racetrack

Amaca, for some unknown reason, learned how to sell papes really fast. She and Race were out of papes in no time, so they went to the Sheapshead Races.

"I got a hot tip on the fourth," said Racetrack, but then again when doesn't he?

Amaca, who hasn't seen Newsies as many times as the rest of us, wasted some of her money on the hot tip. Partially because she wasn't paying attention, there were way to many hot guys there to think about.

After losing his money, he realized, unfortunately, he had lost something else, his heart. He was in love with this girl who gambles, fights, and wears weird clothes. Plus, she was the first person to trust him while gambling, ever.

He hoped she felt the same, but just looking at her he could tell she didn't, he shook his head.

How could she, he thought, she's to busy flirting with other guys to notice I'm alive.

Wow, she was thinking, there sure is a lot of cute guys here, that movie didn't do them justice. Good thing I don't have a boyfriend.

Part 5, Kristie and Jack

For Jack it was just a normal day. He tried to sell his hundred papes, and stay out of the way of the Delancey brothers, all the while teaching this rookie how to sell papes.

Who cares if I'm teaching a goil, I'm still teaching, so she's gotta be the best. he thought, being just as conceited as normal.

Wow, thought Kristie, I'm standing two feet away from Jack Kelly. The same Jack Kelly that lead the newsies in a strike. The same Jack Kelly who is the lead character in my favorite movie.

They were a funny looking couple. A newsie trying to make ends meet and teach some girl who bumped into him earlier, he was still mad at her. And a star-struck girl who had been obsessed for as long as she could remember.

She of course already liked him, but how could she get him to like her? She had to think of a way, which will be hard since he wouldn't even talk to her.

Part 6, Miranda and Kid Blink

"So, why are yous in New Yawk?" Kid Blink asked. He could tell she was up to something, he just didn't know what.

Miranda, on the other hand, was getting fed up with this third degree. This was like his fiftieth question in the last twenty minutes, she had ignored all of them and had just went on selling papers. She wished she was at home with her boyfriend, AJ.

"Why do you keep asking all those questions?" She finally yelled at him.

"Well, maybe if you'd answer one of 'em I'd stop," he yelled back.

"Let me guess, your the kind of guy who can die happy once he has 'a saturday night with the mayors daughter'! You know what, I'm about ready to just leave! I don't care if I do get lost. One of my friends will find me! Plus I've walked around my city tons of times, and its way more dangerous then it is here," she started to walk off.

"Yawr kiddin' right, New Yawk is the most dangawous city dere is," he asked, no longer yelling, now getting interested. What city is more dangerous than "New Yawk", and how did she know that?

"You'd be surprised," she said under her breath.

"What?" he answered.

"Can I tell you a secret?" she asked.

"Yeah shoui," he answered, she guessed that meant yes.

"I can trust you not to tell anyone, I wouldn't want... wait, they don't do that, yet."

"Of couise," he wondered what they didn't do yet.

"We need to be in a private place, nobody can hear."

Blink really wanted to know the big secret, so he took her back to the lodging house. Where she told him all about our little trip there from a hundred years later, and made him promise not to tell anyone.

Part 7, Gabriella and Spot

Spot asked if I had ever been to Brooklyn before. I answered by saying, "I spent a month there one night."

"What?" he looked confused.

"No, I've never been there."

"Spot how are ya?" said an unknown voice.

"Patrick, I'm fine, dis is Gabriella."

Patrick, I thought, wow thats what he looks like, he is kind of cute, they should've put him in the movie, instead of just his mom.

Patrick looked like an actor I've seen in a few made-for-TV movies, Erik Von Detten. I thought that was weird because Detten and Denton are so close.

When we got to Brooklyn, I met all of Spot's friends. It was late by the time we got there so we sat on the docks and watched the sun go down. It cast a lot of shadows on the river.

"So, what do ya do when your not sellin papes?" Spot asked me.

"I like to dance," I answered.

"Like Medda?"

"I don't think so, I take ballet, well, mostly ballet."

"I've never heard of it."

"This is really pretty. I love the scenery," I said.

"So do I," Spot answered but he wasn't watching the sunset, he was looking at me. I looked over at him. He lifted my chin and softly kissed me on the lips. I pulled back.

"Is something the matter?" he asked.

"No, its just that everyone is watching us, and I hate public displays of affection." I thought they didn't kiss in public yet.

So he took me to the Brooklyn Boarding House, so we could talk. (I promise thats all we did.)

Part 8, Newsies Square

The next day, on the way back to Newsies Square, I stole Spot's hat. He told me I could keep it so I would always have a piece of him. I thought that was really sweet.

A second later I heard someone calling my name. It was Eryn, she was walking hand-in-hand with Mush. I asked her how she liked New York, she said she loved it. Miranda and Blink walked over to us from the statue, which they had been leaning against. Then Amaca and Racetrack came and we all started talking at once. Amaca, who was oblivious to everything, still hadn't realized Race liked her.

"So who are dese sweet things," asked Oscar Delancey. (or maybe it was Morris, I don't pay attention to the Delancey Brothers.)

"Why do you care?" Spot shot back.

"Well, if their not your goils then me and me bwudda can have 'em."

"Gabriella here is my goil," Spot said.

"And Eryn is mine," Mush added.

"Miranda is mine," said Blink, then he whispered in her ear that he had to say that, she just smiled. I gave her a bad look, because I thought she was cheating on AJ.

"Amaca is mine," Race said. Becky looked shocked.

"I don't believe you, prove it, kiss her."

So Spot and I kissed, Mush and Eryn kissed, and Race kissed Amaca. Miranda and Blink were to busy talking to listen to Oscar.

"I only meant ya Racetrack, but I believe ya," Oscar said, and then he left.

"What'd you do that for?" Amaca asked, everyone else was still kissing.

"Well, your to good for a Delancey, and I didn't want to see him abuse you," Race answered. He looked heartbroken, and Amaca still hadn't realized he liked her.

"Thanx, sweetie," she said, sarcastically. After that he didn't look so heartbroken, but I don't think he realized she was joking.

Just then Kristie and Jack walked over to us. Jack told everyone to stop kissing it was time to sell papes. After Spot and I stopped kissing, I heard something behind me. The next thing I knew Eryn, Kristie, Miranda, Amaca, Kristie, and I were in Alivia's room, looking stunned.

We went downstairs and Alivia asked where we had been, and when Miranda and Kristie had gotten there. She also wanted to know when I had gotten the Newsies hat. We just started laughing, and watched the rest of the movie, it wasn't too far from where we had left off.

At the end I was surprised to see me and Spot in the carriage. Eryn was under Mush's arm as he walked past. Amaca flirtatiously pushed Race and then ran offscreen, Miranda was talking with Blink, they just stood there, oblivious, and instead of Sarah walking off with Jack, it was Kristie.

Eryn and I looked at each other and started laughing, she had seen it too.

Part 9, Home Sweet Home

At the next school dance there was four new guys. We didn't even notice them until the first slow song, when they singled us out. They came over and asked us to dance, the one who went to Miranda asked AJ if he could cut in, and he almost got punched on the face, Miranda just smiled her sly smile. The guys names were Scott, Matt, Blake, and Ross, but their nicknames were Spot, Mush, Blink, and Race. While I was dancing with Spot, he leaned and whispered "is this ballet?" into my ear. I smiled and shook my head no.

The next day we got a call from Kristie, who goes to a different school, there was a new boy going to her school. He was from New York and his name was Jack.

Part 10, Happily Ever After

I guess "Happily ever after" is a way to describe what happened. Spot and I got together every weekend, to make things even better, he's the only guy I know who can stand Newsies, he says it reminds him of the old days.

Eryn and Mush dated for a while, but like in 1899 he was girl crazy and she was very jealous. I can't help but feel partially responsable for the break-up, because Mush started taking dance lessons, and we were picked to do a duet in the recital, so we were together a lot, rehearsing. Luckily, they both told me they like each other, so I'm working on getting them back together.

Kristie and Jack got really close but realized they were more like friends then anything else. They still see at lot of each other though. I wouldn't be surprised if they change their minds. In fact I think they might even be secretly dating.

Miranda and Blink were really close and AJ got so jealous that he broke up with Miranda. She was so heartbroken that she cried that whole night. The next day she went to school with circles under her eyes. When Blink asked her what was the matter she told him of how AJ had broken up with her. He was nice enough to talk to AJ and explain that he thought of Miranda as his best friend, and that even if he did like her like that it would be to awkward to go out with her. Aj and Miranda are currently dating, but she spends a lot of time with Blink.

Amaca and Race, on the other hand, is another story. They did get together but they spent the whole time fighting. In fact Race even somehow broke his arm. We're not exactly sure how but we have an idea. None-the-less he still likes her, but all she talks about, with him at least, is all the cute guys at her work.(I'm not sure, but I think its her way of flirting, you know, she's trying to make him jealous.)

Part 11, Reaction after Reading

"I can't believe you wrote that," yelled Amaca.

"So what are you gunna do about it, Amaca?" I answered.

"Just go back to Brooklyn!"

Part 12, Dings ya should know while reading dis pape

1. Skyline is a chili parlor found only in the Greater Cincinnati area.

2. All my characters are based on one of my friends, except Amaca. Amaca is a mix between my friends Becky and Emily.( But you don't know that)

3. Emily hates Newsies.

4. Becky is crazy, we all are, Becky in particular(but not about Newsies.)

5. I am obsessed, and can't live without Newsies

6. Miranda might be a little left out at places, thats because I added her in at the last minute.

7.The last line in my actual story, not counting part 12, is the last line in the movie; its said by Jack, while Spot rides of in the carriage, you have to listen very hard to hear it.

8. Erik Von Detten is my favorite non-Newsies actor, I have said many times that all Newsies is missing is him.
