Unit plan for The Collector by John Fowles

Created by Jamie Fein

April, 2002

I have decided to write my unit plan on The Collector because the novel explores the depths of how far people will go to capture their ideals, as well as what happens when you capture beauty.  Since the novel is broken into two journals, one written by the collector, and one written by the innocent specimen; it allows the readers to examine the same story in two different points of view.  This unit plan is geared towards a tenth grade high school English class.  The following lessons focus on learning about the characters through language, incorporating technology and performance into the classroom, and creative writing exercises focusing on the character’s point of view.  This book is very unique with its perspective and would be a great addition to any tenth grade English curriculum.

I have used Shakespeare Set Free and The Cambridge Edition of the Shakespeare plays as a guide for creating some of the lesson plans.  Any other source used is properly labeled.

I hope you have as much fun going through the unit plan as I did creating it.
