The Collector
Lesson plan by Jamie Fein
Day 15
Whats on for today: Students will explore the relationship between the three characters through performing a scene and exploring the theme of collecting. Students will also explore the meanings behind the names of the characters
What to do:
1)Students take turns being Miranda and G.P. as three different students perform different scenes from pages 183-193.
2) The class will then discuss what G.P. collects
3) What type of person is G.P. from what Miranda tells us
4) Discuss how she idealizes him, much like Ferdinand idealizes her
5) Discuss what Miranda collects
6) Discuss how nothing the author does is an accident and ask what do they think the name Miranda, Ferdinand, and George mean.
Homework:
Students will go to BabyNameLocator.com and look up the three names as well as their own. Write a journal entry and answer the following question: Are the descriptions accurate for the characters in the novel as well as for yourself, explain why? Read pg 240-270.
The
class was a success if:
- students were able to understand the scene between G.P.
- students were able to comprehend G.P. as a collector of women and Miranda a collector of information and ideas
- students were able to understand how the characters idealized each other, and what happens when you idealize someone
- students made educated guess as to what the names mean
