I finally got to hunt!!!! Opening weekend I had other commitments. It was really hot and muggy anyway, so I didn't feel too bad. Headed out Monday 11/10/03 at noon. I like to be in the stand by 3:00 so there was just enough time to cut up some apples for the big sandera and take a shot of the hardware that makes all this happen and so enjoyable. |

Just before I get to the stand, I hear grunting. I hear it everywhere and a lot of it. I didn't get in the stand, cause I thought I might miss an opportunity on the ground. I couldn't have done this anyway, more on this later. Just stood at the base of the stand and waited. I kept seeing them stick their heads out of the brush, but couldn't get a shot. They were just too close to see them through the scope. I was tempted to shoot from the hip!!! Three sows came out 30yd from me and were trotting toward the feeder. Far enough to get a bead. A pregnant one down. After the blast, there was all kinds of brush movement and piggy noises. I did see some more at the feeder, that I did not see earler, because of the weeds. There could have been 20 or more!!!! |
My stand, once again, is swarming with wasp, just like last year. They don't seem too aggressive. I had wasp spray in the stand. After I nailed them the entire floor was crawling with dieing wasp. I sweeped them out so I didn't have to deal with wasp "goo" all day. A pack shows back up at the feeder. One big sow and 12-16 piggies. While taking photos, the sow takes off, and I miss my shot at her. I lined up two litle ones, not hard to do with these numbers, and got them. |
A little latter, a good sized boar shows up and I don't mess around with the camera, he goes down also. A pack of turkeys show up, to check out the pigs. All hens and not too interested in the corn. Probably already got their belly full at the other feeders. Three deer walk by about half way to the feeder. These are the first deer I have seen so far. All full sized, one doe and two bucks. Small horns, a four point and a six point. Gone before I could get the camera out. Wouldn't have wasted a bullet on any of these. Another pack of turkeys shows up where the first pig lies. |
One last boar shows up at the feeder. He doesn't care there are four laying around dead and bloody. No pictures, it is getting dark, I just let him have it. One last look down the sandera before I get out of the stand. At the back was a buck with some decent horns. I couldn't tell for sure because of he lack of light and the 250yd distance. Didn't take a shot. He could have been nice, but I doubt he was exceptional. The last time I had this much piggie fun was a few years back when I got out of the stand to find a down sow and all her new born were running around everywhere. 20yd from me a bobcat came out of the brush and grabbed a piggie and took off. WOW!!!!!! Now the real work comes of dealing with 5 pigs!!!!!!! While loading them up, I'm still hearing piggie noises. Driving off, I stir up three more. They stop to check me out and then disappear in the brush. If I had non-scoped, lighted or night vision hardware with me, I'm pretty sure I would have had some night success also. I've got to run these critters out of here so I will have a more successful deer season. They cannot LIVE at my feeder!!!! |
Tuesday morning was a wash. I was in the stand for two hours and couldn't see a thing becouse of the fog. Filled up the feeder and headed home..... SMILLING ALL THE WAY!!! |
The place was a mess, I had to clean it up!!!!! |
