Lots of Critters, None with HORNS |
This is my second trip to the lease, not counting getting it ready. I got 3 stand sessions in. Monday morning, evening and Tuesday morning. Perfect conditions, other than the fact the rut has yet to start. Temperatures in the 20's at night, light wind and no moon. |
Small 4 point came from the left, wanting to go to the feeder. He don't have the courage with the piggie there. This is the only deer so far that has been interested in the feeder. 2 doe pass between stand and feeder. This is a well used trail. They didn't even look toward the feeder. They were in site for just a few seconds. Pack of 7 doe and younger deer show up in sandera near the back. Pack of 5 doe and younger deer show up in sandera closer to the stand, other pack still there. |
Pack of 4 doe cross the game trail mentioned earlier between me and the feeder. Got out of the stand at 9:30 and slept in the Jeep for 4 hours!!! Couldn't beat the cold breese and no insects. Woke up just in time to get ready for the evening hunt. |
Monday evening: Sightings: 7 deer(2 bucks), 10-12 pigies, flock of turkey, coyote, bobcat Spot coyote out right window, bouncing through the brush by small creek. In view for 2 seconds max. Mature buck shows up in sandera with wimpy horns. While watching him, the buck and I spot a bobcat walking slowly away from the buck about 20yd from him, heading toward the stand. He walks about 10ft and disappears off the sandera into the brush. This is the fifth one I have seen at this lease. This buck is the best buck I have seen so far.......sad. Six point and horns are inside the ears. There will be no tag wasted on this fellow. Smaller 4 point joins him in the buffet. Five doe and younger deer join them also. Buck pays no attention to females..........NO RUT YET. Surly I'll see some respectible horns when this happens. Pack of piggies show up at the feeder. Lots of big and little ones. Lined up 2 biguns, one drops and the other limps off while the others run. The blast was barely acknowledged by the deer in the sandera. They stopped eating for just a few seconds and then right back to it. Cool!!!! |
Tuesday morning: Sightings: lots of turkey, red fox (NO deer, NO piggies) It looks like it snowed with all of the frozen dew this morning. My stand, being metal was coated in a thin sheet of ice also. A flock of turkey fly down from their roost to the feeder. Ate a little breakfast and wondered off. This is the first time I have ever seen them land right at my feeder in the morning. I often see them take off in the evening to roost. It is common to see some of them in the trees for the night come. Spotted the first turkeys this year in the sandera. There were 3 at the very back. It took them all morning to work their way to the middle of the sandera. I spot a red fur ball hunkered down in the sandera watching the turkeys as they head his way. At first I thought it was a small coyote, but when the turkeys got close, I saw his profile as he headed toward the brush, I was a red fox!!! I thought I was going to get to see an ambush, but I think he lost his nerve as they got near. They did dwarf the little guy. This is the third red fox I have seen on this lease. Got board, a rare thing down here, so I got out of the stand early to fill up the feeder and head home. While driving away from the stand, a doe and a yearling jumped the fence and were headed toward my sandera. I drive home smiling and satisified. |
