Most of us think Horror Films with Witchdoctors, Black Magic, Dolls with pins in them, Crazy Dancing, Chickens having their heads cut of, Snakes, Graveyards, and Zombies.
Not so it is a religion in its self, no one knows how far it goes back, could be as long as 6,000 years in Africa.
It was
not until Europeans invaded Africa for the slave trade that they came across it, they tried to put a stop to it and bring in Christianity.
The slaves where baptized as soon as they landed from a long and prelists journey in Haiti and other West Indian islands, many of them died from illness and over crowding, men, women and children on the long crossing.
There religion ended up going under ground like so many did
If any one was court-practicing voodoo there could be imprisonments, lashings and hangings to try stopping it because they
could see how powerful it was with the peoples, they thought by stopping it they could have control over them. This religious
struggle continued for three centuries, but none of the punishments could extinguish the faith of the Africans who kept their religion in secret.
Voodoo is made up from many African religions now an Afro-Caribbean religion that mixed practices from the Fon, the Nago, the Ibos, Dahomeans, Congos, Senegalese, Haussars, Caplaous, Mondungues, Mandinge, Angolese, Libyans, Ethiopians, and the Malgaches.
