This website was originally started as a "real-time" online journal. That is to say, when I was on this trip back in the Spring of 2002, I would update this online journal every 3 or 4 days (whenever I found an internet cafe in Japan, which was not all that often, and not all that cheap).
After returning to the U.S., I updated the journal with additional information and pictures, and then later make changes to the website's style. If you are interested in seeing this progression, read on.
Record of Changes
2004 Feb 16 : Yahoo! Geocities deleted my site?
I found that this website was no longer here! I don't know how Yahoo! Geocities messed up, but they did. Fortunately, I had a backup copy (of course) and uploaded it.
2002 Sept 5 : CSS
Updated the website so that it conforms to CSS (style sheets).
I found these websites especially instructful:
- A List Apart: A Designer's Journey
- thenoodleincident.com: Box Lessons: Tutorial on boxes in CSS
- glish.com: CSS Layout Techniques
- w3schools.com: CSS Tutorial
The most inspirational, as far as ideals, was the first one by A List Apart. The second article, box lessons, inspired alot of the CSS used on my site.
2002 June : after the trip
Changed the website so that each journal entry was a seperate page. Added some of the 250+ pictures that I took on the trip.
Here is an example of what the journal looked like for the May 2nd entry.
At this point the website used standard HTML 4.0 compliant code, but only minimally took advantage of CSS. Each page was basically a table with a fixed width of 600+ pixels, and the pictures on the left sidebar resided in a table column that fit exactly the thumbnail picture sizes.
2002 April 12 - May 30 : during the trip
Added content every 3-4 days, while on the trip. There were very few pictures available at this time (I did not take a digital camera on the trip, so only had those pictures that friends there sent me).
Here is an example of what the journal looked like on April 29th. Note that links to pictures and such may be dead links, at this time.
2002 April 8 : setup
Setup up the original website, so that I could write to it easily while abroad. The idea was that journal entries would all be on one page, and I would just append to that same page with each new journal entry.
