Jason glanced at his watch once again and sighed. He had one week to complete his ultimate goal and the first of many steps had already been put into place in less than twenty-four hours. A few of his most trusted guards were on their way to Port Charles to keep a watch on the Spencer home. Johnny had sworn on his life that he would guard Carly, but unfortunately that would only make Sonny suspicious. Manny Soto, one of his best men, was on his way to take care of that duty.
Luke and Laura would watch over Carly and Michael and along with Lucky’s unexpected return from the dead, Jason knew that they would be safe. The Spencer’s were like a pack of hyenas when it came to protecting family. And Carly and Michael were family.
Regardless, he would need to return home within the week. Home. Jason rubbed the back of his neck and he leaned against the doorframe overlooking the ocean. He was still so raw over the situation that he didn’t know how he was going to react when he saw her. He couldn’t even say goodbye to the woman, how would he handle this?
He shook his head tiredly as he stepped out onto the balcony and sat on the nearby lounge chair. The one thing he couldn’t deny was the fact that he was still in love with her. He leaned his head back and tried to focus his energy on his sole target. Sonny Corinthos.
~~~~~~
Jax fidgeted nervously as he watched the clouds zoom past on his way back to Port Charles. It was at times like this that he regretted not flying the plane himself. His ringing cell phone became a welcome distraction from the million thoughts running through his head, hoping that for once, it would be information he could use. “Jax here.”
“Hey, it’s Will.”
“What do you have for me?” Jax rushed on, leaning forward in his seat.
“Jax, maybe you should take a break. You’re not sounding so hot.”
“Will, save the lecture and tell me what you found.”
“The trace came back,” Will sighed into the phone.
“And?” Jax egged on. There was no response for a short time. “Will, come on!”
“Puerto Rico. At the San Juan Hotel and Casino. Unidentified caller, but it’s assumed to be one of Corinthos’ men.”
“Damnit, I knew it.” Jax hit the intercom button and began to bark orders at the pilot. “Paul, we’re going to Puerto Rico.”
“Yes, sir,” was the only response he heard and went back to the phone call.
“Jax, maybe this isn’t such a great idea,” Will continued. “At least wait for me and we can head out there together.”
“Don’t worry about me, Will. I have this under control.”
“Jax, be reasonable. How in the bloody hell do you think you’re gonna track down the man who made the call?”
“Don’t worry about it,” Jax muttered, running a hand through his hair. “Corinthos isn’t the only one with connections.”
“Jax . . .”
“Will, I appreciate the help, but I need to do this on my own.”
Another pause and then came a heavy sigh from his friend on the other side of the line. “Alright, Jax. Call me if you need help.”
“Of course.”
Jax hung up and ran his hands through his hair again. “Sonofabitch,” he muttered. “You’ll pay for this, Corinthos.”
He hit the intercom again. “Paul, how far out are we?”
“We need to make a stop to refuel, but we should be there within four hours or so.”
“Good. Keep me updated.”
“Yes, sir.”
~~~~~~
Jason continued to stare out into the ocean. He wasn’t sure how long he had been sitting there, but it had been a while. The sun was beginning to set and the kaleidoscope of colors danced across the water. Only one thought circled in his head. His hatred for the man that had become like his brother. Sonny.
A quick knock at the front door broke him out of his thoughts. He slowly rose from his seat and rolled his neck as he made his way to the door.
“Yeah?” Jason called without opening the door.
“Sir, there’s someone here to see you.”
“Who?”
“He says he’s a friend from Port Charles.”
Jason rolled his eyes at his response. “Did he give you his name?”
“No, sir, he said he would only speak to you.”
“Is he clean?”
“Yes sir.”
“He’s in the casino?”
“Yes, sir.”
“Fine, I’ll be down in a few minutes.”
~~~~~~
Jason made his way down to the casino. Carefully eyeing the patrons, his hand continuously staying on his gun, he was prepared for whoever it was that was there to see him. He soon spotted him standing at the bar, drink in hand. Jason pinched the bridge of his nose and sighed. Jax noticed Jason as well and he began to make his way towards him.
“Of all the damn people,” Jason muttered.
Jax was only able to get so close before two guards stopped him.
“What do you want?” Jason sighed in a bored tone.
“It was you, wasn’t it, Morgan? Admit it.”
Jason narrowed his eyes and gave Jax an exasperated look. “Shut up.”
He turned around and headed back to his room. The guards escorted Jax a few feet behind Jason.
“Are you proud of yourself?” Jax continued to goad.
Jason turned around and pointed at Jax. “You wanna talk, fine. But shut the hell up and wait till we get somewhere private so the wrong people won’t overhear your fucking mouth.”
They finally made it to the room and Jason slammed the door shut as Jax entered.
“Now what the hell are you doing here?”
“I’m here to get the proof that I need so that I can go back to Port Charles and kill your boss.”
Jason chuckled humorlessly as he watched Jax. “You’re gonna kill Sonny?”
“That’s right.”
“Ok . . . why?”
“He arranged it so that I would receive a false tip leading to Brenda’s whereabouts.”
Jason simply crossed his arms at the information. “Brenda’s dead and even if she weren’t, what’s this got to do with me?”
“Brenda isn’t dead,” Jax hissed. “I had the call traced and it came from this casino. And surprise surprise, guess who I find here.”
“Look, Jax, I don’t have time to play these little games with you, so I’m going to say this once. No calls were made to you by me or by my men.”
“I don’t believe you.”
“I don’t care.”
“I’m not leaving until I find out who did this.”
Jason regarded the man in front of him for a short time. He finally knocked once on the door behind him and one of his guards appeared.
“Sir?”
“I want you to find out if or when a call was placed to the mainland,” he turned back to Jax. “When did you get the call?”
“Earlier this week. Tuesday.”
“I want a trace made on all calls placed on Monday and Tuesday to the mainland. Port Charles, New York specifically. He,” Jason pointed towards Jax, “is going to give you the number.”
Jax grabbed a napkin from the wet bar and quickly jotted down the number and gave it to the guard.
“Keep this quiet and if the call was made, as soon as you find out who it was, bring him to me.”
“Yes, sir,” he responded and promptly left the room.
Jax sized up Jason and crossed his arms across his chest. “Why did you do that?”
“So that you can get the hell out of my face. And more importantly, I want to find out which one of my men still works for Sonny.”
Jax narrowed his eyes at him. “I thought you all work for Corinthos.”
“Not anymore,” Jason muttered.
Jax couldn’t help but laugh. “Did the mobster and his mobster in training have a falling out?”
Jason quickly grabbed Jax by his collar and got in his face. “I’m doing you a huge favor. Don’t make me kill you before you get your info on your precious Brenda.”
Jax pushed Jason off of him and tackled him to the ground, punching him in the jaw in the process. Jason flipped them over and punched Jax in the face twice before Jax managed to kick him off. They both go to their feet, ready to fight.
“Come on, asshole,” Jason grunted.
Jax charged at Jason and was able to hit him squarely in the chest and then brought both of his hands together and made contact with Jason’s face with his joined fists. Jason swept his leg and Jax landed on his back as Jason kicked him once in his kidney and then hit him in the face again.
Jax managed to get up and both of them, bloody faces and all, circled one another ready for another round. Before they could proceed, a knock at the door stilled the tension. Neither of them moved from their position.
“Sir?” the voice called from the other side. “Is everything alright?”
“Fine!” he shouted back. Jason shook his head and grinned evilly at Jax. “I’ve got no problem with you, Jax. You can give up now before I kill you.”
“Not gonna happen,” Jax muttered.
After another round of fighting, both men stared daggers at the other.
Jax wiped at his bloodied mouth with the back of his hand and stared at Jason. “Did you break away from Corinthos for good?”
“Maybe,” Jason replied as he straightened up a little.
“You want him dead too, don’t you?”
“Maybe,” he repeated.
Jax couldn’t help the smile that crossed his face. “Then maybe we should think about not fighting each other, but joining to kill him.”
Jason shook his head at him. “You’re crazy if you think I’m gonna join you to do anything.”
“Think about it, Jason.”
“I thought about it, the answer’s no.”
"What I’m curious to know, is why you want Corinthos dead all of the sudden?"
Jason grabbed his gun from the nearby desk and aimed it at Jax. "What if I tell you and then kill you?"
Jax smirked at him and straightened his back. "You'll change your mind," he told him confidently.
"Don't hold your breath."
Another knock at the door came as Jason continued to aim his gun at Jax. "What?" he yelled
"Mr. Morgan, sir, you're needed downstairs. It's in regards to some of the --"
"Alright," Jason interrupted. "I'll be right down."
He glared at Jax and pointed towards the door with his gun. "Get the hell out of my hotel."
Jax nodded slowly and finally relented. "Fine. But I’ll be back tomorrow."
"Whatever," Jason sighed.
~~~~~~
Jason’s guards escorted Jax back down to the casino. They began to make their way to the entrance, but Jax stopped in mid-step when he spotted the petite brunette at the roulette table.
"Brenda?" he whispered.
He shoved his way past the guards and grabbed a hold of the brunette’s elbow.
"Brenda?" he called again.
The woman turned around ready to tell off the man handler, but stopped when she saw Jax.
"My name's not Brenda, but for you I can be, doll," she winked at him.
Jax smiled and let her go. "I'm sorry. I thought you were someone else."
"You sure, handsome?"
"I'm sorry," he repeated as the guards grabbed a hold of him once again.
"That wasn't very smart, Mr. Jax," one of the guards told him.
"Get your hands off of me," Jax muttered.
"Sure. Just as soon as you're outta Mr. Morgan's casino."
"Room 1212 if you change your mind," the woman called after him.
He smiled wickedly at her as the guards led him away. "I'll remember that!" he yelled back.
Jax turned his attention back to the guards. "You can let me go now."
"Yeah. Okay," one of them replied, but didn't do as requested.
They made it to the front door and Jax sighed impatiently. "You can tell Mr. Morgan, I'll be back tomorrow night."
"And I'm sure he can't wait to see you either," he replied sarcastically. "Goodnight, Mr. Jax," he told him as he gave him a shove out the door. "And thank you for visiting."
Jax straightened his coat and he glared at the guards who continued to stay posted at the casino doors. He hailed down a cab and made his way back to his hotel. It was going to be a long night.
~~~~~~
As Jason made his way back towards his room once again, he cell rang.
“Yeah,” Jason muttered.
“Jason, it’s Manny.”
“Hold on,” Jason sighed. He went back into the room and slammed the door shut. “Go ahead.”
“I just wanted to let you know that I’ve arrived in Port Charles.”
"Good. Are you at the Spencer's?"
"Yeah and I've met with Johnny."
Jason nodded his head at the information. "Okay, don't let anyone see you and let Johnny know what's going on as much as you can."
"No problem. Anything else?"
"Yeah, you know what Sonny looks like. If you see him go anywhere near the house or Carly or Michael, let me know."
"Easy enough."
"Don't let anyone see you, especially Sonny."
"You got it, Jason."
"Good. Update me as much as possible," Jason added as he ended the call.
"Just a few more days, Carly," he muttered to himself.
And then what? He questioned himself. He ran his hands over his face and sighed. What would he do when he saw her again?
~~~~~~
As Jax settled into his room, his thoughts flashed back to Jason. What could have possibly happened for him to turn on Sonny? He grabbed his cell and quickly dialed a number, hoping to get some answers.
"Hello?" the voice at the other end answered.
"Hey, Ned. Jax here."
"Jax, where ya been, buddy?"
"Oh you know, here and there," Jax laughed.
There was a short pause and Ned finally sighed. "Jax, there's no one else in this world besides you that wants Brenda back more than I do. But maybe you should think about taking a break. Come back home."
Jax ran a hand through his hair as he listened to his friend. "Ned, I'll be back. Soon. I just gotta follow up on one thing." He paused for a second. "But that's not why I called. How are you doing? How's Alexis?"
"We're all good. And you know damn well she misses you."
"I miss her too. Tell her that for me?"
"Will do."
"I, uh, ran into your cousin today," Jax began.
"Junior?" Ned asked slightly surprised.
"No. Jason Morgan."
"Really? No one's heard from him in weeks. Was he ok?"
"Yeah," Jax pressed on. "He looked fine to me. But you mean to tell me Sonny hasn't heard from him either?"
"Yeah believe it or not."
"So what happened?" Jax asked casually.
"No one's really sure. But Emily's convinced it's Carly's fault," Ned laughed softly.
"Carly Quartermaine?" Jax asked surprised.
"Yeah, apparently she's having Sonny's kid."
Jax's eyes went wide with the information. "That doesn't explain why Jason left."
"Sure it does," Ned sighed. "She and Jason had this thing going on on the side. AJ even knew about it, but there was nothing that was gonna stop Carly from being with Jason . . . Well at least until she slept with Sonny."
"So Jason found out she was pregnant and left town?"
"No, actually that just happened. Jason left town almost right after he found out about Carly and Sonny. Or at least that's what Emily thinks. Unless someone told Jason, he has no idea that Carly’s pregnant."
"Really," Jax muttered, his mind going into overdrive.
"Apparently it killed Jason more than anyone really knew."
"Hmm," Jax murmured. "So Sonny slept with Jason's girlfriend."
"Something like that," Ned laughed. "What's with the twenty questions?"
"No reason," Jax laughed. "I just saw him and he didn't look too happy, that's all."
"As long as he's away from Sonny, I guess it's for the best."
"Right," Jax agreed. "Listen, Ned, I’m gonna let you go. I'll talk to you soon."
"Alright. Jax don’t forget what I said. Maybe it's time for you to come home."
"Yeah. Take care."
Jax looked at his phone and began to piece all of the information Ned had given him. On one hand he could understand where Jason was coming from. The anger to kill Sonny for what he had done. On the other hand, this was exactly why Jax wanted to kill Sonny himself. Alone. He deserved to die painfully and he was afraid that Jason would be too merciful on him because of their past relationship.
He shook his head at his thoughts and lay back on the bed, crossing his arms behind his head. He once again prayed that he wouldn't have the same dream that had awakened him every night since Brenda had gone over the cliff. He just needed one good night’s sleep if he was going to try to convince Jason that joining forces would be in the best interest of them both.
~~~~~~
It’s always a surprise when two people with such different backgrounds can find one common trait. Jason Morgan and Jasper Jax both hate one man, Sonny Corinthos. Both men long for the women in their lives, but something is standing in their way.
For Jax, the fact that his beloved Brenda may be dead is not an option for him. He believes with all of his heart that she is alive. Unfortunately for him, it is a fact that he may have to start to reconsider. For Jason, the fact that the woman he loves betrayed him for another stabs at his heart. And as much as he wishes he could forget her, he can’t. So for now, both men focus their anger, their frustration, and their fear on one common goal. The death of Sonny Corinthos.
And although both men make peace with the fact that their worries will end when Sonny Corinthos’ life will cease to exist, they’re both plagued with nightmares. Jax awakens every night with the same horrific sight of Brenda going off a cliff as she did almost two years ago. Jason awakens drenched in sweat as well. His nightmare differs nightly. Tonight he pictures Carly, smiling, laughing, and kissing him. And then all of the sudden he sees her making her way down a staircase dressed only in Sonny’s shirt. The sight makes him want to hurt something, anything. And at the same time, it makes him ache all the more for Carly.
