INTERESTING EVENTS IN TOWN OF MAHARANI (1884 - 1904)

These events in Maharani was published in the English language news "Straits Times" and "Free Press Singapore". Both newspapers have part time journalists in Muar at the time.

1889

One night in the month of Ramadhan, this town was attacked by gangsters also called Cempiang. The surprised attack started at 2.00am, weapon themselves with andang, colok and bereng-bereng hammer. They came in from coastal area. these gangsters are from a syndicate called "Bendera Merah" (Red Flag) which was banned by the government. They were angry at the police who earlier had captured it members on some wrongdoings, as reported by the members of "Bendera Putih" (White Flag), a legally operated syndicate. The attacked went on for a few days after which they were hunted by police and villages under instruction of Orangkaya Omar.

20-May- 1890

A vessel called Cercil C. Smith came in from Singapore bringing in Chinese Baba tourist to Muar.

1-Jun-1890

Six Chinese was held in prison here awaiting trial had escaped and was not found.

4-Jan-1892

The Johor government vessel called "Sayang" arrived to fetch the Muar soccer team to participate in a sport event organised to welcome the new year in Melaka.

27-Jun-1892

A carcass of a large blue whale was found at the seashore of Sebatu village in Melaka new the border to Muar, Kesang. Upon further instruction from the Resident Counselor of Melaka, the whale was given to Singapore Museum and it is still there at the Singapore National Museum.

28-Feb-1884

His Mejesty Sultan Abu Bakar arrived in Muar and will stay for 10 days. This year, kerosene is brought in and the population of Muar light up their houses with kerosene lamp. Eventually, they start using Ketaya Damar (a kind of candle).

4-Dec-1894

A Chinese Minister claimed to be sent by the government of China visited Muar to collect funds to help the war in China. He travelled around wearing his ceremonial Chinese ministry costume, but most Chinese retailers are skeptical of this.

21-Feb-1895

The town of Maharani celebrates the birthday of His Mejesty. His Mejesty Sultan Abu Bakar was present at the ceremony.

29-Sep-1903

A Chinese worker in a mine, Lombong Bukit Mor, was killed by a tiger while he was cutting out rattan in the forest.

The Muar State Railway finished it construction work until Parit Jamil, about 18km from Maharani.

A 13 year old Malay boy was killed by a crocodilewhile he was swimming in river Terap. His body was not found.

3-Dec-1903

To solve the problem of having no hotels in Muar town, Abdul Kadir bin Kudas, owner of a famous shop called "John Little Muar" opened up a motel called MUAR REST HOUSE (MRH). These was located at the attic of the shop. The first occupants were two Australian gold mine engineers from Australian Gold Mining Company, Raub, Pahang, who coincidently on tour to Maharani on the opening day of MRH.

30-Mar-1904

A very large wild boar was lost from the nearby forest, was cought roaming around the road in middle of Maharani town. The incident caused some chaos for a while. At that time, the town have only 20 beca (tricycle taxi) services for moving around town.

7-May-1904

On Thursday, around 50 leaders of government offices including Dato' Pesuruhjaya Kerajaan (Government Commissioner) and a few Chinese businessman, Indian and Arabian merchantswere invited by the Manager of Muar State Railway, W.L. Leach, for a train joy rideto Parit Jamil.

14-Jun-1904

A good news, another road (for cattle carts) were built in Tanjung Agas which joins the Maharani town with Kedana Gold Mine in Gunung Ledang (Mount Ophir).

20-Oct-1904

It was regretted today, coffee was not planted anymore in Muar. During this time, rubber was introduced and most planters converted to planting rubber trees.
