Histories of Muar

HISTORY OF PADANG.

Padang (literally means field) was a district under the empire of Johor. It was rich with agrcultural and natural resources. It was located at the west coast of Muar. Physically , it has low sea level, wide and flat landscape.

This area starts from Parit Perupuk until Parit Jawa with 13km long and 6km wide. This size varies from time to time with different governments it was under.

Under the Dutch government (1641 - 1825), Padang was stated to be from Parit Perupuk to Parit Pinang Seribu. Under the Malay ruler of Sultan Abu Bakar, it was stated to extend until areas around Balang river.
Orang Kaya Ali bin Haji Said a.k.a. "Orangkaya Ali", He is the opened village areas around Balang river.
Orangkaya Abu Bakar bin Bedu. He was born in Padang in 10th October 1852 and died in 17th April 1917. He opened the place called Belantapuri (Parit Bakar), Muar.

Padang had always been famous for its local tropical fruits mainly Duku, Mangosteen and Durian. Padre Favre travelled throughout Johor from Singapore (1848) using Johor river, Batu Pahat river and along the coastal line of Padang towards Melaka. He recorded at the south sea opening of Muar river, there is a wide landscape with rich and highly populated area from export of local fruits.
