A Home For Every Child
Volunteers are working for change in the community. They donate their time because of their personal commitments or beliefs. Since they are not paid it is important to acknowledge their worth and to give them recognition. They play a vital role in communities as they work towards community change.
Hiring staff is costly to the organization. There are times when it makes more sense to have volunteers donating their time (Homan, 1999, p. 216). Often volunteers are doing jobs outside of their normal job description or it can even be someone offering help to a stranger.
" All community members receive a call to volunteer service, based on what they sense the need to be. This service need not be mandated, dictated, generalized, or federalized " (Hesselbein et al., 1998, p. 52).
