Description

This is a Northern Electric 5700, one of the models known as the Baby Champ. It is a good example of a radio that was very popular, made and sold for low cost, and sold in high volume during the post-war radio boom. It uses a very simple and reliable AA5 design that did not change much over a period of years. It is electrically very similar to my model 5000.

As received the radio worked but was very dirty and rusty, had a crack and scratches in the case, a bad line cord, and burnt out pilot lamp. The speaker was quite badly damaged on one side.

Restoration consisted of a good cleaning, recapping, replacing line cord and pilot lamp, and alignment. The tears in the speaker cone were repaitred by gluing paper. The gold lettering in the knobs and front panel was repainted. The case could use being reapainted but I have not done that yet.
