I'm still trying to understand why schools still have fire drills. You'd think that after 12 years of this we'd catch on that if there was a fire in the school and the alarms started going, then we'd have enough know-how to get out asses out of the school and to safety. But they keep blaring these alarms in the middle of the day when we least expect it,and make us waste our classtime standing outside so that we'll know what to do when the time comes, which in my opinion is still the same as the condescending bullshit public service announcements that they put us through while we were going through elementary school.
Here's my opinion on this matter. I think that anyone who is stupid enough to die in a school fire, especially our school, was probably too stupid to survive in the real world anyways. If you're going to bitch me out about this and think that I'm an insensitive bastard, read my reasons for this.
First off, my school has 12 exits from the building, which includes two sets of quadruple doors in both lobbies. Now, if someone were to pull the fire alarm because there was a fire in a class room, Everyone would have enough time to get out of the building before the fire spread and it became serious. Now, let's say that an exit was blocked due to the fire. What is the next best thing to do? Simple. TURN AROUND AND GO OUT THROUGH ONE OF THE OTHER 11 EXITS!!! Now, what if a student was trapped in a class room because of a fire that was blocking the only door out of the classroom (which is bloody unlikely because every classroom has a door leading to the classroom next to it)? Well, a logical course of action would be to go out one of the six windows that each classroom has. Break it if you have to. It's not like you're going to have to pay for it anyways, considering it'll probly be broken during the fire. Just so you know what I mean, here is a map of our school and I've marked out exits and the like.
Any questions? Good. Let's move on.Now, in the unlikely event that you're trapped between huge walls of fire and there is no way out of the building because the exit is blocked by fire and the other way behind you is blocked by fire, what would you do? The smartest thing to do would be to turn towards the exit, and jump through the fire to get out. OH NO! You might get burned you say? Who cares?! It's better than dying in the fire. That and if you do manage to get out and people see you as you are running through fire, they'll think that's cool. While you're at it, save a few small children or an animal. You'll get on the front page of the newspaper and be known as a hero.
While stating my opinion on this matter, I had someone deciding to stick their 2 cents worth in by telling me that people panic, and everyone will try to crowd out of the building as fast as possible, causing people to die by getting trampled and also there's a possibility that if the doors will swing inward and if everyone's pushing forward then the doors won't be able to open. Ok, here's my stand on this. First off, everytime that the fire alarm gets pulled and there actually is a fire, no one knows until everyone's already out of the building and sees the fire truck coming anyways. And people are probably going to think that it was just someone pulling it for a prank anyways, so who the hell is really going to panic? No one's going to leave the building in an orderly fashion even if there is a fire, we're all gonna try to get out as fast as we can regardless of how many drills we had previously, so they become obsolete. Finally, The doors to the school open outward so that arguement really doesn't work here. After pushing their opinions in my face, the other person decided that they'll tell me some stories about some times when people were killed during fires at a rock concert and the like. Which has absoulutely nothing to do with what the hell I'm talking about. Because if there are pyrotechnics and they explode everywhere then of course people are going to die. What I'm talking about here is a school with a dozen exits.
I agree with having fire drills in elementary schools, because anyone who has trouble tying their sneakers or the like really should have their hands held during everything anyways, but I think that high school firedrills are a waste of mine and everyone else's time. And don't give me that crap about getting to get out of class for a measely two minutes because it makes no difference. That's just two extra minutes that could've been better spent finishing up your class work instead of standing around outside with your thumbs up your asses.
