  1. Calcium chloride is a waste product from sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) and soda ash (Na2CO3) domestic industry. Its main applications and uses are drying and dehydrating. The best way to melt ice is using CaCl2.

  2. It absorbs moisture from the air and thus prevents dust formation.

  3. It can be used as an electrolyte in a battery, in fuel cells. Or in the electrodes: Ag, AgCl | CaCl2 or Hg, Hg2Cl2 | CaCl2. Why not? The ammonium chloride, NH4Cl, other waste from soda process is widely used in Leclanche's electrochemical cell as the electrolyte. Experiments showed that calcium chloride (and other chloride) is the electrolyte of a relatively broader temperature range of utilization than some other electrolytes.

  4. Read the article: "Anodic and Cathodic Reactions in Molten Calcium Chloride" (Professor D. J. Fray, University of Cambridge, UK, Canadian Metallurgical Quarterly, Volume 41, Number 4, Page 433-439, October 2002).

  5. Read also this article (only the abstract is available): "Behavior of the calcium electrode in aqueous electrolyte" (Cooper, J.F. ; Hosmer, P.K., Electrochemical Society meeting; 9 Oct 1977; Atlanta, Georgia, USA).

  6. It is used together with ZnCl2 in electroplating of bright zinc on steel as the electrolyte. It may be used in electroplating of other metals, too.

  7. It may be used in a solution that contains CaCl2 and Ca(OH)2 to arsenic removal from sulfur.

  8. Calcium chloride is used in the Portland cement manufacturing as an additive to reduce alkali content of cement.

  9. As concrete additive to accelerate its hydration at low temperatures, to give the concrete durability and strength, to accelerate its setting.

  10. Its main using in the petroleum industry is drying petroleum fractions.

  11. It is used as catalyst in organic technology, for polymerization of ethylene and propylene, for oxichlorination of ethane to vinyl chloride, for dehydration of alcohols.

  12. It may be used for waste ammonium sulfate treatment to obtain the gypsum, either.

  13. What are the products from calcium chloride and sodium carbonate?

    CaCl2 + Na2CO3 → 2NaCl + CaCO3

    CaCO3 is calcium carbonate.

See scalenohedral crystal of calcium carbonate - click and scroll down to see how it rotates.

    NaCl is sodium chloride.

  14. Do you remember what the ancient Romans did after they had conquered Carthaginians? They ruined the Carthage and dumped salt everywhere so as not to let any plant to grow in that place in the future. They poured it out over the whole place. Now, you see a desert in this area, even today, more than 2000 years after it. The Romans hated Hannibal and Carthaginians, but the contemporary people sometime act as if they hated themselves.

  15. However, what to do, if the plant produces already thousands tonnes of hazardous waste consisting of CaCl2 and other salts in water solution? I propose not to waste even one kilogram of water. Neither do spacemans in a cosmic station. I propose to recycle the water resulted from evaporation of this solution. This water should be used in the process. When I write it, I almost see you smile. However, what will be the most important chemical in XXI Century? Petrol? Silicon? This will be water.
