Who was Ishmael?
God promised Abraham many descendants, but years went by and Abraham and his wife Sarah had no children. So Abraham decided not to wait on the Lord any longer. He had a son with Sarah's servant Hager when he was 86 years old. Hager named the boy Ishmael.
Later, when Sarah had a son of her own, she insisted that Ishmael and his mother leave Abraham's tent. They were sent out in the desert, and Hager feared they would die. But God promised that He would be with Ishmael. The boy grew up in the desert and learned to be an expert shot with a bow. His desendants became a large tribe of people known as Ishmaelites who lived in the wilderness of Arabia.
Why did Sarah laugh at God's message?
After many years of longing for a child, Sarah grew old. When she was 90 years old, angels visited Abraham and told him Sarah would finally have a son. When Sarah heard the news, she laughed. Its impossible! I am too old to have a baby!
But God did what He promised. Sarah had a son, and she named him Isaac, which means "laughter." Sarah said, In my old age, God has made me laugh for joy!
