Why did God send the great flood to cover the earth?
In the years after Adam and Eve were forced to leave the garden, the human race grew and filled the earth. People built cities, planted crops and tended sheep. But they also did evil things to one another. God saw violence everywhere and He was sorry that He had created man. In His wisdom He had decided to destroy everything on the face of the earth.
But there was one good man - Noah. God decided to save Noah and family, and He told them about the flood that would come. He gave them instructions for building an ark, a large boat that would keep them safe in the days of the flood.
How big was the ark that Noah built?
God told Noah to build a boat of gopher wood which was to be three hundred cubits in length, fifty cubits wide, and thirty cubits in height. A cubit is the distance from an adult mans fingertips to his elbow, about 18 inches. That means the ark was about 450 feet long by 75 feet wide by 45 feet high. The ark would need a hugh ocean, but there was no water anywhere near Noah's home.
Noah did not question God. He had built the boat as the Lord directed, with one window, one door, and rooms on three floors. Noah was to fill the rooms with every kind of food for the animals that God would bring to the door of the ark.
