PLACE: Adult Recreation Centre - Corner of King and Allen Sts., Waterloo
SUBJECT: KW Bonsai at the Conestoga Mall Show (no meeting this month)
President’s Message
Hello everyone, thanks go out to George and Joanne Vanner and Hong and
Juliet Lee for hosting our unofficial club get-togethers over the summer. It was
nice to see their collections and discuss the trees. I think everyone was inspired
and had a great time. The Conestoga Mall Show is coming up; we have two
tables to display our trees. If you want to display your trees, meet us at the mall
for set up. Most of our new members join the club after seeing our display.
I think it is important to get a large variety of different species and to have club
members on hand to talk about their trees. Call Eldon if you have any questions.
I have included the Guelph club meeting times and location. There will be flyers
available at the September meeting to advertise this year’s big show. This is
the first year of the show that will not have the orchid show downstairs, so it will
be important to advertise. If you will be showing a tree at the Guelph show call
them in advance so they can make a nametag for your tree. As well, please
write a short history of your tree. If you need more information please call
June Brett (details are in Upcoming Events section). September’s meeting
will focus on photographing our trees for the website gallery. Also, this meeting
will be a good time to get your trees ready for the Guelph show. Bring your trees,
moss and rocks; do some weeding and clean up your trees.

KW members are encouraged to exhibit their trees at this show. Please contact June Brett before the end of August if you wish to participate. (519-836-4487). June will print up special nametags for your trees for the show if you call her.
Also, please provide short stories about each of your trees- the age, the history and and photos
(if you have them) of the early stages, for the show. Set up time is 10:00-10:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 25. The admission is $2.00. If you need directions to the Horticultural Greenhouse please call June.
Please note that the Guelph Bonsai Society meets on the first Wednesday of every month (except July and August) at 7:00p.m. at U of G and we are welcome to attend.
Tips from Hong
1.Pick up a turntable mechanism from Home Depot, cover it with an upturned plastic plant container tray (circular) and voila! - you have an inexpensive waterproof turntable for outdoors.
2.Bouganvillea make beautiful bonsai.
3.A stair riser makes a dandy set of shelves for your bonsai... Hong stabilized a riser that has three steps (a.k.a. shelves) to make a stable bonsai display unit.
4.Use two clay chimney flues to support a length of 10’’x2’’x 7’ lumber to make a solid bonsai bench.
Bonsai for Sale
1. Eldon and Jean Leis still have some beautiful trees to sell.
Call ahead to make an appointment. 519-743-3763.
2.Tillich’s Nursery–Eldon has some Japanese Black Pines at Tillich’s,
which is located on the north side of Highway 7, east of Breslau.
