President’s Message - Nigel Saunders

Finally we have our show dates for this year. The first show at Conestoga Mall will be a great way to show the public what our club is all about. I’ll make up a handout showing when and where our club meets. I hope we can get a large variety of trees in the show, not just different species, but different species at different stages of training. As an example, I would like to see a tree freshly pruned from nursery stock, and the same species in an older mature design. I am convinced that 90 percent of the public thinks of bonsai as a genetically dwarfed species of Juniper. Let’s show them what we can do! It would be great to get some of our younger club members to show and talk about their trees, because I am also convinced that 90 percent of the public thinks of bonsai growers as genetically grown Japanese masters!

If you are going to put your tree in the show, call me at 519-272-0555. I will make up a tag for the tree, with your name, species (common name) and the number of years in training (optional). We should get together before the show and share some tips on making your tree look the best.

Our last meeting was great fun; there was a lot of good pruning going on as we transformed nursery stock into future bonsai trees. We should designate a clean-up crew for future meetings, so the same people don’t have to stay late to sweep up.

The newsletter is a great resource for club members. If you have trees, pots, tools or supplies for sale, advertise them in the newsletter. If you are looking for a certain species of tree, place a want ad and you may get a response off the Internet! Lynn Howlett is our newsletter editor and can be reached at lyhowlett@yahoo.ca or see her at the next meeting.

I hope everyone can make it to Stratford on July 16th; the rain day will be July 23rd.
There is plenty of parking on the street. I will be home from work at 3:00 pm so stop in any time after 4:00 pm. There is a nursery out Hwy 7 that sells bonsai trees, pots and tools. Klomps nursery is about 3 kilometers from my house; you may want to check it out.
September’s meeting will be all about tropical bonsai, care and maintenance. I hope everyone can bring a tropical tree to the meeting to share ideas and stories.

Have a great summer and remember there are no “official” meetings in July or August.
