NEWSLETTER June 2004
TIME: Every third Wednesday of the month, 7:30 pm (except July, Aug. and Dec.)
PLACE: Adult Recreation Centre - Corner of King and Allen Sts., Waterloo
SUBJECT: Evergreen Wiring demonstration, plant exchange and plant auction
President’s Message
Our last workshop before the summer break will be a wiring
(prune, groom and wire) demonstration by Eldon Leis. Wiring is a method of
shaping your tree by positioning the branches and trunk with the aid of coiled
wire. The wire holds the tree in position while the tree grows. After a growth
period the branches will stay in the desired position and the wire is removed.
This technique was developed in Japan and allows great freedom in shaping
your tree. Please bring a tree for the workshop. If you don’t have wire or tools
you may be able to borrow some.
Finally it should be safe to move your tropical trees outdoors. The nighttime
temperatures are still cool but this coolness will not will not harm your trees
unless we get a late frost. Watch your local weather forecast. When moving your trees from indoors to outdoors, be very careful not to place your trees in the full sun. The sudden increase from indoor to outdoor light will burn the leaves and can kill the trees. It is best to place the trees in the shade
and then gradually introduce them to full sun over a period of two
weeks. When the trees have adapted to the outdoors, it is an ideal
time for repotting.
We will be auctioning off Edna’s trees at this meeting. Edna is looking for a
good home for them. Our best wishes go to Edna and we hope that she has
a good summer.
If you have any seedlings or extra trees to sell, trade or give-away, bring them
to the meeting. Members are always looking for interesting plant material.
During July and August we have no official meeting, but we usually meet at
someone’s home and look at their bonsai collection. We will be looking for
volunteers at this meeting.
The September meeting will be the photography session for the gallery on
our website. www.kwbonsai.com
Have a great summer, Nigel.
Plant Auction of Edna Gomez’s outdoor trees –at June meeting
Eldon will auction off the eight trees for Edna. There will be a minimum price
for each tree. Among the trees offered are a shimpaku pine, a mugho pine,
a mountain ash and some cedars. They may need re-potting.
Note of appreciation
Many thanks go to Nigel who again has provided us with an entertaining
and useful evening.

on the north side of Highway 7, east of Breslau. 519-648-2420. Hurry, hurry!
Tree Source- possible outing
At the May meeting people were interested in the tree Hong brought. It was a potted 5-6 to year old pine tree (‘Desert Pine”) that he had purchased from Harold Mallon, a Stratford area tree wholesaler, who sells at the St. Jacob’s Farmers’ market. According to Hong, Mr. Mallon had many interestingly shaped plants in 5-gallon pots ($20.00 each or three for $50.00) at the market. Mr. Mallon said that if a group of us (not individuals) wanted to visit he would be pleased to show us what stock he has at his tree farm.
Hong suggests that we arrange a carpool and go visit EverGreen Tree Farm.
Good idea.
