PLACE:       Adult Recreation Centre - Corner of King and Allen Sts., Waterloo

SUBJECT: Re-Potting Workshop

President’s Message
I would like congratulate the new club executive and thank them for
volunteering their time. With spring just around the corner we will be doing a
potting workshop, with tropical trees, to tune your skills for the repotting of your
hardy trees in early spring. If your trees are in the ground for the winter, re-potting
should be done as soon as the ground thaws; this is usually around mid-April.
Trees in pots can be done earlier, as the soil will usually thaw on the first warm
day. If you bring a tropical tree for potting or re-potting at this workshop, bring
plastic or a plastic tray to work on. You will also need root pruners, bonsai soil,
drainage material, screen, a root rake and a pot. The pot does not need to be
a bonsai pot if the tree is just in training. Bring your ideas for meeting topics, as
the new executive will be setting the schedule for the upcoming year. Some ideas
that have been suggested are a larch-collecting field trip, making training boxes
and a landscape-making workshop. When the weather gets better we will be
having Les Betka back with a talk and a demonstration on succulent bonsai.
We will be having a soil-making workshop this year. The time and date has
not been set, but probably will be in April. If you find or want to write an article
for the newsletter please submit it to the newsletter editor at least two weeks ahead.
See you at the meeting, Nigel.

Newsletter Editor

It is with delight that I pass the newsletter into the very capable hands of

Michael Eckardt. Michael volunteered his help; I did not have to twist his arm. How lovely!

It is with regret that I step down; I have enjoyed preparing the newsletter,

but I will be unable to get to most meetings this coming year and I feel it is important

for the society to have an editor who is actively involved in the meetings.

I would like to thank Nigel Saunders for his always interesting President’s messages

and his commitment to the society. He works hard for you, folks. Nigel made my

job very easy and I will miss working with him.

I would also like to thank Jeannie and Eldon Leis for all their hard work and leadership

over the years. Jeannie and Eldon have contributed so much; they deserve a very

special thank you for an outstanding effort for over thirty years.

May your trees be strong and healthy.
