NEWSLETTER SEPTEMBER 2003
TIME: Every third Wednesday of the month, 7:30pm (except July, Aug., Dec.)
PLACE: Adult Recreation Centre - Corner of King and Allen Sts., Waterloo
SUBJECT: Tropical Trees Workshop- Nigel Saunders
The Conestoga Mall show was a great success: thanks go out to Eldon, Hong and Edna for submitting trees for display. We had a great variety, from small tropical trees to giant old cedars. We handed out a lot of flyers and hope to get some new members this meeting. Special thanks go out to Hong Lee for watching the tables and talking to the public for the whole show and to Eldon for printing up the flyers.
I’m looking forward to visiting George and Joanne’s place this month, it’s worth the drive to see their beautiful estate. It’s a great social event for all the members!
This month’s meeting is a tropical tree workshop. Bring a tree and your tools. If none of your trees need work, then bring one along for display or for styling advice. I’ll give a quick talk on growing and caring for tropical trees. (Ed.’s note- please bring plastic to cover the tables)
The Guelph show is coming up at the end of this month; I phoned Mary-Anne and she said there would be room for some of our club trees. The Guelph show is the best show in this area, if you don’t have a really nice tree to show, then come out and have a look at some great trees!
I have a great number of one to three year old seedlings that I will bring to the meeting to give away. Most are native trees started from seed. They have been root pruned every year and should make great trees in years to come. I would plant them in the garden this fall and let them grow in the ground for a few years.
See you at the next meeting,
Nigel Saunders
