Controversial Newtown Celtic striker Trevor Cleary faces deportation if he cannot get a new work permit within the next 3 weeks. Cleary was born in Mexico and was spotted playing soccer in the streets with a can of Smithwicks as a football. Newtown scout Bernard Powell was so impressed with what he saw that he snapped up the temperamental gringo without hesitation.

However, Cleary, real name Julio Tanzoco Gonzalez 3rd, has failed to feature in any of Mexico's World Cup Qualifiers so far, and as a result he cannot gain a work permit to play in Ireland, and could be deported by the end of the month. Cleary, who speaks very little English, had this to say to Guardian reporter Jim Delaney: "Thees is disgrace! I come here, I play the football, I want support my family, ees crazy."

Newtown have yet to see the best of the Mexican superstar, and some people felt that he was signed just to sell jerseys. Tan is seen as the Mexican David Beckham and attracts hoards of screaming female fans to every Newtown home game, something Chinky Brophy is very happy about. When asked if he was merely a merchandising tool, a confused looking Cleary said "I know notheeng."

Club official Kieran Hogan has been sent to argue Cleary's case with the North Tipperary board, Newtown are currently awaiting a verdict.
