O' Brien May Be On His Way Out

It has been confirmed that outspoken Newtown Celtic midfielder Colm O’Brien has held in-depth talks with Nenagh Celtic regarding a possible move to the league champions. O’Brien was spotted by a number of individuals meeting with a contingent of Nenagh players in Maddens pub in Nenagh on Sunday 16th April. It is believed that the lazy and controversial midfielder was offered a place in the side, and is currently thinking over the offer made to him, but has not made a decision yet. Meanwhile, Nenagh have also expressed a strong interest in the other O’Brien brother, Damien. As yet no offer has been made for him but it appears that one is not far away.

It is well known that Colm O’Brien has a number of close personal friends at Nenagh, and has been known to associate with their players outside Supermacs after nights out on the town. Newtown fans fear he may be tempted by a big money move to the Premier League Champions. O’Brien has stressed on many occasions that he wants to win silverware, something that has eluded him so far at Newtown. However, Newtown Manager Sir Clive refused to be drawn on the matter in an interview on NCTV. “We will not be held to ransom over Colm O’Brien”, Sir Clive told pundit Mick Morkin. “We have made him a very generous offer that would see him made the clubs top earner, and we all know he is in line for the captain’s armband next year. But after that it is up to him, if he wants to go to Nenagh then he will go.”

O’Brien appeared unhappy at Barry Park last season, openly slamming his team mates and criticising the new crop of players at the club. He had a massive training ground bust up with Richard Jones, and also abandoned the club and headed off to Peru, leaving them battling relegation. When he failed to win a contract over there he came crawling back, humiliated. Now it seems he could be on his way for good. When questioned on the matter O’Brien said “I have not made my decision yet, there is a lot to think about. I love Newtown, but I feel maybe I have become too big for the club. I want to win some silverware. I am a winner, and I’m not sure that Newtown have what it takes to survive another season. Some of the players just aren’t up to it. Take Curly Quigley, Dereck Ryan and Mick Dunne for example. Curly is an ok guy, but he comes from a poor family and he’s just not up to it. And Derro the former captain is a shadow of the player he was a season ago. As for Mick Dunne, he is hardly captain’s material is he? He’s a joke.”
