The wrath of the inimitable
Colm Madden was felt again last night as the
soccer pundit came out all guns blazing in
defense of Colm O'Brien after his controversial
trip to Peru.
A clearly annoyed Madden pulled the microphone
from his lapel during commentary of the FAI
Junior Cup coverage on NCTV in a move
reminiscent of his famous rant against the state
of the Club in Reidy's circa 1998.
Shocked viewers watched as Madden took exception
to fellow pundit Sean Nelon's take on Colm O
Brien's trip to Peru premiership club and
blasted Newtown Celtic manager Sir Clive as
having "lost the plot".
Bristling with annoyance he further hit out at
Sir Clive describing his handling of O'Brien as
"brutal".
And he said Sir Clive would regret the day he
let the Ballywillaim man walk all the way to
Macchu Picchu. Madden, who has long been an
admirer of O'Brien and has penned the soccer
star's biography, was rankled when the
discussion on last night's programme came around
to Colm
O'Brien.
And while it started out as a healthy discussion
of the now famous departure, it ended up with
Madden taking a pot shot at Chinky Brophy.
He described Brophy as "a womaniser" and told
viewers that if they really wanted to know what
the former Newtown Celtic player was like, they
should go and watch the film 'American Gigolo'.
Last night, Madden also made little of the fact
that Brophy donated the stg£1m funds he raised
from his testimonial to charity.
A spokeswoman for NCTV said last night that
things did get heated and Madden made remarks
about Chinky Brophy.
"The Grunt (Quigley) then contested the remarks
to contain the situation," the spokeswoman said.
