Sir Clive: Brophy was right to stay |

Newtown boss Sir Clive is adamant that James “Chinky” Brophy was right to snub Arra to stay at Barry Park. Brophy rejected the chance to move to Arra for the second successive summer after having a last-minute change of heart. The tenacious player seemed set to leave Newtown in the summer after asking to leave only to change his mind and sign a new long-term deal with the premier league outfit. An Arra Rovers source claimed Brophy had made a mistake by staying at Newtown, but Sir Clive insists he made the right decision by staying with his boyhood heroes. "I don't think it was a case for James Brophy of whether he would win more trophies by staying with Newtown or by moving to Arra," said Sir Clive. "The important thing for him was to feel special - and he is something special to everyone at this club. "Chinky was right to stay with Newtown because he believes that he will win trophies with the club and be successful. It is an exciting time to be here. "But it's more than that. He has stayed with people who are his own. He has stayed at a stadium that is special to him, with a great atmosphere and the best fans in the world. "I believe that James Brophy will become a legend at this club. In fact, he is already a legend here both on and off the field. "Would that have happened at Arra? I don't know because he would just have been looked upon by them as one more good player in a squad of good players. "At Newtown he is our play boy, our key man. He had an opportunity to go to Newtown and he said 'No'. The people here told him 'You are our man, you are more important to us than five or 10 new players.' "He is already a legend here, but if he now goes on to win over many more trophies wives and score with many more vulnerable young women, then the fans of this club will talk about Brophy for years and years after he has finished playing." Sir Clive also believes that Newtown deserved their victory over Arra in last weekend FAI junior cup. Although Brophy was absent with a minor penis infection he did recover in time to be available for the munster junior cup this weekend.
