SUMMARY: When Kathryn and Chakotay become matchmakers, all bets are off!

AUTHOR'S NOTE: This fic is the result of a challenge from Jade -- make Kathryn and Chakotay fall in love with each other when they try their hands at matchmaking.

First Contact

How did she get herself into messes like this? Her heart was thumping, her breathing couldn’t keep up with her need for oxygen, and her left-sided brain was screaming at her.

Kathryn Janeway paced her quarters. If she was any dumber she’d be a full admiral, but maybe being stuck in the DQ had hastened her ascent. Descent? She shook her head sharply. Who cared? Dumb was dumb. What galled her most was realising that she really enjoyed this state of dumbness. If dumb meant still feeling his breath and kisses on her body long after he was gone, then she could handle dumb. But how long would it be before she wanted him to drive her to insanity? She groaned.

Her First Officer was drop dead gorgeous and she’d finally cracked, and all because of a stupid bet. Come to think of it, he wasn’t going to win any genius awards himself. He’d started this.

The messhall was in full swing for the supper hour. Even people not on an official meal break had joined their friends who were and there was a happy din in the room. It did not subside with the entrance of Captain Janeway and Commander Chakotay.

"Now this is what I like to hear," smiled Kathryn. "This sounds like a happy crew, doesn’t it Chakotay?"

"Yes, and thank goodness," he smiled back. "There were a few times in the last month when I thought I’d never hear it again, but I think we’re finally back to normal."

They selected their food and found their usual table in the corner before they continued.

"Actually, Chakotay, I was going to talk to you about that. I think this past month has really driven home a few hard facts to some people and I was wondering if you’ve heard about one in particular. Directly, I mean, but I don’t expect you to betray a confidence."

"What is it, Kathryn?" Chakotay’s quiet voice mirrored his concern for the people onboard Voyager.

She nodded inconspicuously towards a table where Samantha Wildman was quietly eating with Naomi. Sam was smiling at something Naomi had just said, but it didn’t take a Betazoid to see that the smile did not reach her eyes.

"Sam." They both said the name quietly in unison and looked at each other. And, as the messhall doors opened to admit someone they both watched that person enter the room and did it again.

"Joe."

"No, Kathryn, I haven’t heard anything officially about or from them, but that doesn’t really surprise me. I realise we’ve been out here for over four years, but these are two good people and they’re both married with children. No matter what the attraction, I think doing anything about it would be extremely difficult for both of them."

"I know," she sighed, "but I can’t help feeling so sorry for them. I guess it’s because I don’t know their spouses or any of Joe’s kids, while at the same time I know their situation here on Voyager. And, even if it makes me a terrible person, I do wish they could find happiness here with each other. Even Naomi loves him." They watched as Joe brought his tray to the Wildman Women’s table and saw his smile as they welcomed him.

"I hardly think that makes you morally corrupt, Kathryn. You sound more like a concerned mother to me than anything else. ‘Crew before self’ has been your motto for as long as I’ve known you."

"Mother!" she snorted. Then she paused. "Well, maybe a bit. I was certainly only a Captain when this voyage began but in four years I have come to think of this crew as my family." She looked up at Chakotay and laughed. "That makes you the Father. Your part and my part made this crew."

He grinned as he buttered his bread and said, "You’d better watch how you phrase things, Kathryn. You know that Tom’s pools make book on the two of us becoming an item, and I always get odd looks whenever we schedule a working meal in one of our quarters. Over-hearing a chance remark like that could send the odds sky high and then I’d be tempted to place a bet and confirm the lie myself."

She grinned back at him. "Well, if it was a good enough haul I think I’d join you.  I don’t know where all my rations go; I’m always scrambling during the last week of the month."  She paused, "Chakotay, do you think I should acknowledge that I know about Tom’s pools and discipline him?"

"No. You keep out of it – I keep my eye on the situation and it’s under control. The crew needs something like this, even if it does confirm that protocol isn’t a concept Tom can actually grasp." He laughed. "Even after all the years that he has served under you!"

"Hell, Tom Paris can barely grasp procedure!" she joined in his laughter. "But I get your meaning, Chakotay, and I’ll watch my mouth. But let me know if there’s an easy way we can score some rations without blowing our cover." She quieted suddenly and whispered, "And here comes couple number two, even as we speak."

Chakotay surreptitiously watched as Harry and Seven entered the messhall. He shook his head.

"No, this time you’re just plain crazy. What in the world makes you think that those two have anything going for each other in the romance department? That’s just beyond imagination."

"You think? I’ll bet you a week’s replicator rations that our Harry has plenty of imagination when it comes to Seven."

"That’s a sucker bet, Kathryn, and you should be ashamed of yourself. Most of the men on board have plenty of imagination when it comes to our Borg -- and probably some of the women, too. But, I’ll make another bet and you can take it or leave it. And put your eyebrow down, I swear she never once entered my mind."

"Right," she grinned.  "If you say so, Chakotay. Anyway, what’s your bet?"

"I’ll bet you that we could match up Joe and Sam faster than we could match up Harry and Seven."

Kathryn laughed. "Commander, are you actually suggesting that the Executive staff of this ship actively and purposely conceive and act on a match-making scheme involving two unattached couples under their command? With the express purpose of seeing which couple actually mates first?"

"Well, that "mating" remark brings to mind animals in a zoo, but basically you’ve got it. Are you on?"

Kathryn took a few spoonfuls of her pudding before answering. Without doubt it was a ridiculous suggestion, not to mention highly inappropriate. But while Voyager was a proudly Starfleet vessel, the crew had adapted a unique dynamic for living on it. Like she had said before, this was more like a family business than just a professional working crew. She looked up and met Chakotay’s eyes.

"You’re on -- but a few conditions must be met. First, we put the same amount of effort into the matching of both our couples, I don’t want any favourtism shown." He nodded his acceptance. "Second, ultimately we accept the decisions made by our four potential lovers, without them EVER knowing we even thought of such a unprofessional activity." He nodded again. "And third, I want two weeks’ worth of your rations when I win!" He laughed.

"Oh, Kathryn, you are so on. And it’ll be nice to finally get back some of those rations you’ve stolen from me over the years. And for spirit's sake, put down that damned eyebrow, you’re beginning to look like Tuvok!"

He held out his hand and they formally shook. From across the room Tom watched the ritual with interest and then turned to B’Elanna.

"I think something’s up with our two senior officers, Be. I wonder if I should call a group meeting and put another J/C wager on the books. Might be interesting -- and profitable."

Kathryn’s doors slid open at her command and she and Chakotay looked at each other. They both burst out laughing.

"Great minds think alike," they said in unison and then stopped, startled.

"We have to stop doing this!" Again they spoke together and laughed. Kathryn motioned him in with her head and then they stood appreciating each other. Chakotay was holding a bottle of wine in one hand and two wineglasses in the other. Kathryn was holding two full glasses of wine and the open bottle sat on the coffee table.

"You go first, Chakotay. This is not a habit I want to develop – can’t you just see this act on the bridge?"

"Well, if we go looking like this – yes."

They both smiled again. They each wore jeans, a "Voyager Olympics" tee shirt, and had left their feet bare. This meeting was going from the ridiculous to the bizarre very quickly but their eyes still held and their smiles still shone. Kathryn was the first to speak.

"Well, let’s not just stand around, come in and let’s get comfortable. We have some serious planning to do."

As they settled at each end of the couch, Chakotay remarked, "I sure hope you have some ideas, Kathryn, because I’m completely blank. I’ve never acted as a matchmaker before in my life."

"This was your idea, mister, and I expect your full participation. And what make you think I’ve ever done anything like this before?"

"It just seems like a woman thing to do." He paused, "and there goes that eyebrow again. Cut it out!" She glared at him, then took a sip of wine.

"Okay, I’ll start. We have to think of ways to bring our couples together in an intimate environment, but it has to be done so that it forces them to acknowledge their feelings for one another. What do you do when you want a woman to notice you in a romantic way?"

"Well, I guess it depends on the woman. I want her to be comfortable with me and then when she is I might create situations that would get me into her personal space to see how she reacts. I want to touch her, smell her perfume, and feel her breath – and I want to know that she feels the same about me." Chakotay rose from his seat and sat next to her with his arm stretched out behind her on the back of the couch. "Like this." He leaned toward the coffee table to pick up his wineglass and, in doing so his arm came into contact with Kathryn’s neck and shoulders while his thigh brushed up again hers. When he sat back his arm and leg did not move away. "But how do we inspire Harry and Joe to do their version of this?" He took a sip of wine and looked into her eyes.

Kathryn’s breath quickened as she regarded him. "Dance?" He smiled.

"Is that an offer, Captain? I thought we were brainstorming here." He leaned forward to put his glass back on the coffee table and sat back again, using his arm to subtly bring her closer to him. He looked into her eyes again.

"So, what’s the female version of these kinds of maneuvers?"

She thought for a moment and finally confessed, "I don’t know. I haven’t …. what I mean to say is that I’m not …. Oh, damn it, Chakotay, I’m not very experienced in this kind of thing. Justin seemed to be interested in me first and then Mark was just suddenly always there. I never really had the opportunity to "pursue" anyone in my life -- sometimes I’ve wondered myself what I would do but I guess it’s just not my lot in life."

"Well, why don’t you let yourself imagine a little?" He reached for his glass again and settled back. "Okay, I’m Joe and you’re Sam. You’ve had feelings for me for quite a while and you’re sure I share them. But I haven’t said anything or made any moves on you and you’ve finally reached that stage where you want to know for sure. We’re in your quarters for a quiet evening together – what are you going to do?"

Kathryn sat in deep thought, sipping her wine. As she mulled over a few ideas Chakotay watched her, also sipping his wine. After a short time she stood up, put her empty glass on the coffee table, and announced, "I’ll be right back."

Chakotay followed her exit with startled eyes until she disappeared into her bedroom and then he refilled their glasses and considered the situation.

He had always found Kathryn appealing. He had acknowledged that to himself at the beginning of this voyage and then had firmly packed that feeling away in the furthest recesses of his being. There were many things about Starfleet that he had not admired at the time, but he agreed with its view on fraternization on board ship, especially with a fellow officer. He had never had to beg for female companionship and he was sure that, even in the Delta Quadrant, friendly planets along the way would supply him with many a memorable shore leave. Why would anyone want to start something potentially disastrous on board a ship out in deep space? Starfleet missions were not known for their frequent overturn of crew and working with an old lover….well. Not him, not ever and definitely not decades away from home.

And then his arm had slipped down across Kathryn’s neck and shoulders in a simple role-play and he’d felt a rekindling thrill from deep inside of himself. And not just a thrill of the hunt, but a thrill of real desire. He could still feel her skin and that surprised him greatly.

"Shake it off," he silently commanded himself.  "You’ve danced with her, you’ve played contact sports with her, you’ve carried her to Sickbay a few times, there’s nothing new in touching this woman….this captain. Think of her as Jean-Luc Picard, because it’s just as inappropriate to be with her as it would be to be with him. He gagged at the comparison and then firmly buried his sudden awareness for her. They were here together to devise a matchmaking plan and, as far as he was concerned, that was all.

Then she re-entered the room and he looked up, almost spitting his wine back into his glass. The jeans and old tee shirt were gone and in their place was a long, soft, clinging blue dress with slits on both sides. Maybe ‘dress’ was too formal, it had the definite atmosphere of casual comfort and he had a sudden urge to pull its front fastener down a little to expose more of her throat and chest. He refused to consider that her breasts might be the main attraction – and then he was looking at her hair. The style hadn’t changed but she must have brushed the hard hairspray from it because it was swinging more and looking very touchable. And he suddenly wanted very much to touch.

"What do you think, Chakotay?" she asked with an uncertain tone in her voice. "I’m really not very good at this – is this something that would help a woman wake up a hesitant man?"

She came to the sofa and sat close to him, tucking one leg under the other. He could now smell her soft perfume and feel her breath, but as long as she didn’t touch him, he’d be fine. Then she put her head on his shoulder. He’d been right, her hair was very soft – and he suddenly realised that he wasn’t anymore.

"Well, I can’t speak for Joe, personally, but I’m sure that he would love to see Sam in something like this. At least she’d be offering him something to do with her."

She looked at him in puzzlement. "Do? Do what?"

He smiled into her eyes and gently started to pull down the fastener. "If you were Sam and I was Joe in this situation, I’d definitely consider this…." His head bent down and he kissed her on her exposed throat. "And then this…" His mouth slid down her décolletage as his hand kept pulling the fastener. He felt Kathryn tremble and clutch his thigh but then she gasped and he came to. First he jumped back and then he leapt to his feet.

"Kathryn! Captain!" He stood looking down at her stricken face. "I – I don’t know what to say. I’m sorry!" He looked around her quarters as if waking from a dream. "I really am sorry, Kathryn, and it will never happen again. It’s time I left." He was at the door before she could utter a word. "Goodnight, Captain. I’ll see you on the bridge." And he was gone – leaving her to consider why, after having two fiancés in her life, she could not remember her entire skin burning for them after a simple kiss like it was burning now for her best friend and First Officer.

Tom often thought how he had mixed luck. There was the big stuff, like being sentenced to the penal colony – that was his bad luck. But then there was the small stuff, like seeing Commander Chakotay leaving the captain’s quarters in a state of dishevelment – that was his good luck. He knew without asking that Chakotay was thinking about Captain Janeway in ‘that’ way - it was written all over his face, not to mention elsewhere. And Tom was just the man to take advantage of such knowledge. He grinned and went in search of Harry.

Spirits! How could he have done that? He’d broken one of his cardinal rules and with his captain no less! He berated himself unmercifully. And, if she ever asked, what would he say was the reason he’d kissed her on her throat and, he groaned, even lower. What could he say - there was absolutely no excuse. Oh, he was a dead man, there was no doubt about that.

Chakotay stopped his pacing and stood at his viewport, watching the stars. Just what had happened back there, anyway? This wasn’t New Earth, where they weren’t serving as fellow officers and where he’d indulged in making one small pass at her. Why, after all this time, would he suddenly feel an irresistible urge to get skin to skin with Kathryn Janeway? He shook his head in disgust and started for the bathroom.

She’d smelled wonderful and that skin – he slowly licked his lips at the memory of his mouth tasting her softness. In frustration he grabbed a washcloth and covered his face with cold water for a moment. He looked up and glared sternly at his reflection and his comments to himself were sharp. You’d better get a grip, old man. Even if you wanted to ignore your non-fraternization rule she’s not your type; she’s too short, too skinny, and far too controlling.

Then, for the first time in his life, Chakotay reconsidered the shortlist that any woman had to meet in order to catch his eye. Yes, Kathryn was relatively short but lots of people were -- and skinny could never have kept his eyes glued to that soft, clinging dress like they had been. And, come to think of it, she hadn’t even been that controlling with him for a couple of years now.

He suddenly realised that he had actually allowed this change to exist without noticing it – some first officer he was. Then he remembered her blushing confession regarding her relative inexperience in initiating romance; spirits, she must be so lonely after four years in space. His mind wandered to the many experiences he would be more than happy to share with her; after all, contrary to his own satisfying shore leaves she often stayed on board so that her senior officers could take full advantage of their down time.

And then his anger resurfaced and he was firm with himself. No. This was not going to happen, he was just due for a good old-fashioned shore leave -- and not with her. He wasn’t a hormonal kid anymore and he had no intention of changing life rules at this stage of it.

He sighed and turned on a real water shower - extra cold.

They were much more formal for their second meeting of MatchMakers Anonymous. Both were wearing uniforms and the meeting was held in Janeway’s Ready Room. No wine, no clinging dresses, no bare feet and a large desk between them. Touching was not on the agenda for either of them.

"Okay," said Kathryn briskly. "Last time we talked a bit about how our couples might act if they wanted to take their relationships a little further in private. But let’s leave that to them and consider what methods we could use to help them publically find their way to that point."

He frowned. "I can only think of obvious ploys – parties, dances, you know the scene. It’s pretty lame but I just can’t think of anything else. And I’m not sure I’m up to another of Neelix’s or Tom’s bashes – it always take me days to recover from them."

"Yeah, I know. I thought of moonlight sailing, romance holonovels, and other holodeck activities, but then I realised that those are my preferences and I have no idea how to get our couples to use one of my programmes without coming across as being very, very strange."

He smiled thoughtfully. "I like that Lake George programme but I’ve never actually participated in a holonovel."

She looked at him in shock. "Never? Oh my, they’re the one thing that can absolutely make me forget what’s happening in real life. No bridge, no attacking aliens, no leola root -- I tell you, they’re the best therapy on board ship."

"Really? Hmmm, I wonder if I should start suggesting it to some of the crew when they’re ready to snap for one reason or another. Although, I can’t imagine some of our bruisers wanting to prance around in period costume." Chakotay laughed and then caught her glare.

"Commander, I might point out that what we’re wearing could also be described as period costume. I think if all you tough guys can handle this uniform then you can handle what the bruisers throughout history wore." She crossed her arms and frowned.

"I’ll take your word for it, Kathryn. I’m sure that men in leggings thought they were the model of manliness." He smiled disarmingly at her but she didn’t look convinced.

"Okay, you big Maquis, why don’t you join me in one of the programmes on file and let’s see how you do." She almost burst out laughing at his horror stricken face.

"I might, Kathryn," he said slowly, "if I get to pick the century. Deal?"

"Sure, I have no problem with that. Actually, you can pick the novel, too," and she slid a padd across to him. He studied it for a while and then looked up at her.

"How about this Nero Wolfe novel? It sounds kind of interesting."

She took the padd from him and read for a moment. "Chakotay, this isn’t a romance holonovel, it’s a murder mystery. We don’t want them killing each other, we want them falling into each other’s arms." She read for a few minutes longer and then slid the padd back to him. "How about that one, it’s in the same century and all you’d probably have to wear is another uniform. I think your manly pride would survive that."

He read the synopsis for ‘Tales of the South Pacific’ by James Michener. "Sounds fine by me and thank you for considering the clothes. Hey, maybe I’ll get to fly one of those old World War II war planes!"

She rolled her eyes and tapped her communicator. "Computer, is a holodeck free right now?"

"Affirmative," came the reply.

"Please reserve four hours starting in ten minutes under my name." Kathryn looked up at Chakotay and smiled. "Get ready for the next best thing to shore leave, Commander!"

Considering some of his shore leaves, he was extremely doubtful -- but he followed her out the door.

"Kathryn, this isn’t what I was expecting," groused Chakotay as they laid low in the wet tropical underbrush.

"Shhhhh, do you want to be caught?" she whispered back.

"Yes," was his brief reply. He tried to adjust his hat to keep the teeming rain from hitting his face. It didn't work.

She looked at him in disgust. "Chakotay, we are on this island to discover the whereabouts of the Japanese and their sea and air strengths. If they catch us we could lose the war."

"Kathryn, I don’t know how to tell you this, but you’re wearing the uniform of the ancient US Marine Corps and I seem to be some kind of civilian. Women were not admitted to the fighting services during World War II and if we get caught they won’t be taking you into a hut for interrogation purposes."

"Then I suggest you amend your previous statement about wanting to be caught, Commander," she said dryly. "Anyway, this is not reality, this is a holonovel and it doesn’t matter one whit if I chose to act out this part. It’s allowed. You could have picked out any one of the many tales in the book, you know. This top secret surveillance one was your choice"

She stiffened suddenly at the sound of an airplane. "Take cover!" They both dove into the dense palm forest and caught their breaths as they kneeled, watching the plane through the trees. Kathryn recorded the type of aircraft and its direction and he watched as she swiveled around to face him.

"That was close," she whispered shakily.

"Close," he repeated softly. His eyes were dark as they sat on their heels, their knees touching on the jungle's floor.

Slowly Chakotay reached over to her cheek and tried to wipe a spot of mud from Kathryn’s dripping face. Startled, she raised her hand up to cover his and their bodies became completely still while their eyes locked on each other’s. He turned his hand over and ran the back of his fingers along her jawline, slowly gathering up raindrops. He felt her shiver and then he murmured, "Oh hell…." and lowered his face to hers.

It was a gentle kiss, one of introduction and testing for the other’s reaction. He drew away and looked into her eyes with a question in his own. She looked at him for a brief moment and then gave her answer – she reached up, pulled off his hat, and ran her fingers through his soaked hair. Then she pulled his mouth back down to hers.

Passion overtook the gentleness and he lowered her down into the wet underbrush until she was completely prone under his body. His kiss was now demanding - introductions were over and he wanted her. His mouth claimed her lips, kissing them, nipping them ever so softly, and running his teeth over them. His tongue probed between them and pushed past her initial resistance, finding her tongue and joining it with his. Kathryn was swiftly leaving reality behind. The way he had taken possession of her mouth made her body scream to be possessed by of all of him. She moaned and trembled under him and felt his immediate response.

He suddenly rolled over to his back, taking her along with him. Now his face was more aligned with her throat. He kissed it slowly and then harder, determined to leave his mark. She threw her head back and let out a primal sound and he slid lower on the wet ground to capture her breasts. His hands left her hips and felt their way to the buttons on her shirt.

And then, at a small sound behind them, they both turned to look into the barrel of a rifle with an attached bayonet. The Japanese soldier holding the rifle had a particularly nasty smile on his face as he stood there regarding them. They looked at one another and gulped for breath.

"Are you sure this is in the book?" he asked huskily and then they both jumped at the furious yell of the soldier. He jerked the bayonet upward to indicate that they were to stand. They obeyed and he used it again to order them to walk in front of him. Again they obeyed and Chakotay whispered, "I don’t like the feel of this, Kathryn. I hope the safeties are on!" And then he was sent flying by a brutal bash to the back of his head with the rifle butt.

"Chakotay!" cried Kathryn as she ran to him and turned him over, just in time to get the same rifle butt against her temple. And then everything went black.

They woke up on the floor of a hut, ankles tied, arms tied behind their backs, and both tied to each other. Their heads were screeching in agony.

"Hi," said Chakotay softly as Kathryn came to. "I was getting worried about you."

She gasped at the sound of his voice so close to her booming head. "Hi yourself. What happened?"

"Oh, good news. We’ve been captured by the Japanese but I really don’t think they’re all that happy with their new guests."

She closed her eyes in pain. "Well, maybe we should just stop this novel for now, Chakotay. I’ve never been in one that switched gears like this."

"Oh, more good news. The first thing out of my mouth when I came to was ‘computer, end programme.’ Apparently there is a malfunction in this novel, and one I really don’t want to experience. Kathryn, you’ve got to pull yourself together and then we have to put some fleet moves on these jokers. Do you think you’re up to that?"

"Just give me a second, Chakotay, then I’m right there with you." She nestled her face into his neck and heaved a sigh. "If I had to be here I’m sure glad I’m with you," she whispered weakly.

Chakotay steeled himself against the feel, smell, and closeness of her and considered their dilemma. He accepted his protective feelings towards this woman in addition to the others he had surrendered to earlier, but what he had to concentrate on now was the safety of his captain. There was no way he would accept the idea that Captain Janeway of the starship Voyager could come to harm in World War II when her first officer was there with her. It just wasn’t going to happen. He hoped.

She took a long breath and pulled her head back from his neck. "All right, Chakotay, I’m with you now. What are we going to do?"

"Can you scroonch your way sideways over to that table, Kathryn? I’m sure I saw a knife there even though it seems unlikely. I get the feeling that this group of soldiers are about to break camp and I’m hoping that knife was left there accidentally while they were packing. I also sincerely hope that it’s very sharp."

"Yes to the scroonching and I’m really hoping the knife is there. It happens sometimes when participants really goof up the plot of a holonovel or, in this case, the computer does it for them." So, like two caterpillars crushed to one another, they started their long humping path across the room.

Chakotay looked at Kathryn when they were beside the table. "The next step is to stand up together without falling over on top of one another. This will take a lot of teamwork, Kathryn, to balance out the difference in our sizes. Are you ready?"

She whispered quietly, "Yes, I’m ready." They both bent their knees behind them and attempted to roll up into a praying position. It took several attempts but they finally did it, although Kathryn had to lay her head on Chakotay’s chest when they succeeded. He bent over her and whispered encouragements into her ear and she moaned her acknowledgement. He looked on the tabletop and, sure enough, a sharp knife was there. It was time for round three.

"Kathryn, we have to stand together now, can you manage?"

"Yes," came her muffled reply. Just tell me when."

"I’m going to be the one who stands, Kathryn, you just be prepared to come along with me when I do it. Try to keep your balance, I certainly don’t want us to fall back down with me on top of you – I think your head has taken enough for one day." He felt her nod and got into position. With a huge grunt and a superhuman effort he managed to pull both himself and Kathryn up to their feet. Now, as she leaned against him, he realised just how weak she was; he had to get her to sickbay as soon as possible.

"Kathryn, the knife – I have to lean backward over the table, be prepared to lose your footing and try to keep balanced. Are you ready?" Again he felt her nod against his chest and heard a small "yes."

He backed up to the edge of the table and opened his knees as far as his ankle bindings would allow. He was able to wiggle his butt onto the top itself and supported Kathryn’s body between his knees. Then he lowered his body down with his fingers scrambling to reach and grip the knife. It took a few minutes to accomplish this and he was exhausted and sweating when he finally got it between his hands. He pulled himself up and gasped for air.

Now he had the knife and the very delicate job of cutting the rope wrapped around his wrists. He decided he could not do this while holding Kathryn up, so he gently whispered instructions for her to follow and he bent his knees and sank to the ground. She leaned against him fully with her head still nestled in his chest.

It took so long to cut those cords. Half a dozen times Chakotay thought he heard someone approaching the hut and he broke into a sweat. More than once he leaned forward to confirm if Kathryn was still conscious. However, he worked at it patiently and finally his wrists broke free. He took a minute to flex them and then cupped Kathryn’s head between them and looked into her pupils.

She was definitely concussed and now was not the time for her to fall into unconsciousness. He found his communicator in a hidden pocket and immediately called for a site to site beam out to sickbay. It was with the greatest of relief that he heard the familiar whine and felt the disintegration of his atoms. World War II was finally a bad memory, not unlike the ones experienced by the real participants four hundred years earlier. And Kathryn was finally safe.

She awoke a couple of hours later and took her time trying to comprehend the ceiling of sickbay. When she gradually absorbed the sounds and smells associated with it her confusion left her and she tried to sit up. Something was stopping her.

Chakotay was sound asleep in a chair slammed against her biobed with his head on her ribs and his arm across her hips. He was still dressed in the damp clothes from the holonovel and when she tried to move his arm it instinctively tightened around her. She wouldn’t be going anywhere until he woke up.

"Ahh – you’re awake, Captain!" came the cheerful voice of the Doctor. His face hovered over hers and continued. "You’re perfectly fine now although you suffered quite a concussion and an odd bruise. The concussion has been taken care of but Commander Chakotay ordered me to leave the bruise the way it is. Now that you’re awake you can tell me what to do – it certainly would only take a minute to get rid of it."

"Bruise?" she wondered out loud. The EMH handed her a small mirror and directed her eyes to her throat. She blushed deeply and handed the mirror back to the doctor. "Thank you, Doctor, but I think I’ll just leave it the way it is. It’ll be gone in a week or so, anyway."

"As you wish, Captain, although I certainly don’t understand why the two of you would have such a curious attitude about a funny bruise. Anyway, I’d now like your help in ordering the Commander to remove those wet clothes and take 24 hours rest leave. He had a mild concussion and was a very difficult patient, as usual -- I just couldn’t get him to leave. And since his scans are normal now, I’d like him out of my sickbay. Incidentally, you’re officially off duty for 24 hours, too." The Doctor turned and went back to his office.

Kathryn brought her hand up and stroked Chakotay’s damp hair. She knew what he’d gone through and the emotional levels he’d had to cope with. She wondered if it was Kathryn or Captain Janeway whom he had been more concerned for. As her first officer he’d brought her to sickbay several times but she couldn’t ever recall him waiting beside his captain’s bed until she woke up.

She let her fingers trail over to his tattoo and softly traced its lines on his forehead. Then she reached down and stroked the arm that held her securely to the bed. She relished the feel of the muscles in his arm; she would feel very safe in their embrace. And the hand, she placed hers over it as she had done in the holonovel and then drew it quietly away.

"Don’t stop," he whispered.

"You’re awake," she said softly and ran her fingers through his hair again. "Why didn’t you say something."

"Feels so good…." His sleepy voice paused and then softly continued, "Put your hands back on me, Kathryn. I want to feel your hands on me."

"Shhhhhhh," she whispered. "It’s okay, Chakotay, I’m going to take you back to your quarters now, the Doctor wants you to have a 24-hour rest. You’ve been through a lot today."

Without moving his head he looked up at her. "I’ll go, but on one condition, Kathryn. You stay with me for the full 24 hours. You need a rest, too, and we can look after one another."

She smiled and ran her finger down his nose. "Sure. The shape we’re in, I think that’s a safe enough plan; I’ll stay with you." He straightened up and stood to help her off the biobed. As she slid down to the floor he took a half step forward, effectively trapping her between himself and the bed. His hands went to her hips and stroked them gently.

"Kathryn, - you’ll always be safe with me. But I’m telling you now that when we get to my quarters I’m taking you to bed. We’ll get the rest the Doctor ordered and we’ll sleep safely in each other’s arms, but at some point during those 24 hours we’re going to discuss what we started on that tropical island."

"Then we should probably do that before I follow the doctor’s command to order you to remove your wet clothing."

His mind registered her statement and his eyes glittered. He pressed his hips into hers and let his hands slide up from where they’d been caressing her, travelling over her breasts, hesitating there momentarily, and then up to hold her face between them. His dark eyes looked steadily into hers.

"You’re the perfect height for me, you know that?"

She blinked. "Height? Chakotay, are you sure you’re really feeling okay?"

"I’m fine, Kathryn. It’s just nice to know that old dogs can learn new tricks – it's a pleasant discovery."

He smiled down at her and then leaned forward, forcing her to bend her back down on the biobed. To compensate he grabbed behind her knees and wrapped her legs around his hips. He buried his hands in her hair and took one more lusting look at her before he brought his head down and pressed his mouth on hers. Her gasp gave him the entry he wanted and his tongue swept and swirled around her mouth, charging up feelings buried deep in her centre for the second time this day. As the heat spread throughout her body her legs tightened around his hips and she involuntarily rocked against him. He could not stop the growl that rumbled from deep within him and which tickled her lips, but that didn’t matter as her soft moan rose up to match it.

Her hands came up and pushed between their pressed bodies, feeling his hard chest over his wildly beating heart. Slowly they inched higher until they could caress his shoulders, marveling at their strength. Then they gently circled his neck, again feeling his muscles, and finally they slid up into his hair.

The EMH looked up from his computer terminal and saw the action through the windowed walls of his office. He did a little growling of his own and marched out to confront them.

"Hey you two! Not in my sickbay you don’t! I ordered you both on 24 hours REST leave and I meant starting now! Go back to your quarters and quit scaring my specimens!" The Doctor glared at them as they pulled themselves back together.

"You two should be ashamed of yourselves, acting like this in a public place!" he harrumphed. "Now, get out!"

They looked at one another and then Chakotay wrapped his arm around Kathryn’s shoulders and whispered, "Let’s go home." He steered her to the doorway and they were gone.

Tom leaned around the meds cabinet where he had been performing inventory. He raised his eyebrow at the EMH.

"Well, Doc, what did you think of that display" he asked.

"I think I know the origins of that odd bruise on the captain’s throat, is what I think, Mr Paris." The EMH was still looking at the door of sickbay thoughtfully.

"Oh, yeah, that. It’s a hickey, Doc – I was going to explain that to you later, but now that you’ve caught up I have another question for you."

"And what is that, Mr Paris." He turned around to face Tom.

"Do you think that Captain Janeway and Commander Chakotay are finally going to have sex?"

"Mr Paris! I hardly think that’s any of our business if they are or not!"

"Well, actually it is. I’ve got a pool running on that very subject and I need proof that the deed was done before I can pay out." His pleading eyes looked at the EMH. "Any chance that you could monitor…."

"No! Mr Paris!"

"It’s still not too late to place a bet, Doc."

"I don’t really use replicator rations, Mr Paris, so what’s the point?"

"No point, Doc, just friendly conversation." Tom searched his brain and then tapped his communicator. "Paris to Torres…B’Elanna, please meet me at our usual spot in five minutes."

Luck was a funny thing, Tom mused as he walked through corridors to meet B’Elanna. He hadn’t been scheduled for sickbay today -- it had been a last minute shift change. And once there his position behind the meds cabinet had been perfect - he had been able to see and hear everything that went on between the captain and commander while still remaining invisible to them. In almost five years he’d gotten to know the commander quite well and he harboured no doubt about the resolution of his pool. He recognized the look in Chakotay’s eyes and hell, if it had been directed towards him, he’d be unable to resist the commander. And, he reflected, that wasn’t a sexual observation, it was an observation of authority. The commander had a natural power over people when he bothered to exercise it and there was no doubt in Tom’s mind that it was going to be exercised within the next 24 hours. He grinned – it was about time.

"Explain to me again why I should do this?" B’Elanna stood in an eerie imitation of Captain Janeway, rigid back, hands on hips, and chin jutting out in stubbornness.

"Be, if I don’t have proof that the captain and commander are finally, well, together, then I can’t pay out on this bet. Do you have any idea how many rations are involved in this one – it’s been building for years!"

"How do your illegal betting pools justify my invading the privacy of our executive staff? Tom, forget that it’s the captain and first officer, Chakotay is my friend and I would never do anything to hurt or embarrass him. So, get lost."

"Be, I have enough riding on this bet to keep us in rations for months. But I cannot pay out without having proof on file somewhere and, just because I have that proof does not mean that anyone will ever see it. I’m paying out, not refusing to pay out. Get it?"

B’Elanna sighed. "Okay, I guess that makes a bit of warped sense. What kind of proof are you looking for? If it’s pictures you can leave right now, pig."

"Ewww, Be, give me a break – that would be like seeing your parents doing it. No, I thought maybe heartbeats per minute or something. I already plan to log the location of their communicators for the next 24 hours. And I’m doing the same with their replicators for things like champagne and little prezzies or toys. I just have to have enough information to make the average person satisfied that the bet was paid legitimately. And like I said, bettors are more concerned when I don’t pay out."

"Okay, I’ll get you heartbeats, temperatures, respiratory, and perspiration, but that’s it. If it’s not enough you’ll have to deal with your betting scum yourself. Got it?"

He leaned down and kissed her on the cheek. "Got it, Be. And you won’t be sorry when I get those rations and we can paint the town for weeks!"

"Get out of here," she growled. But as he walked away she watched and smiled.

"Hey, Sam!" Joe called out as he trotted to catch up with her in the corridor.

"Hi, Joe," Sam smiled brightly at her friend. "I’m just on the way to the messhall, can you join me?"

"Sure can! I’m looking forward to Neelix’s rendition of Leola Root a la Cordon Bleu."

They both laughed at the very thought, and then stopped. It was very possible that lunch would be exactly along those lines and eating food like that was not as much fun as joking about it.

"So, did you hear about Captain Janeway and Commander Chakotay?" asked Joe.

"I heard some rumours but I can hardly believe it. After almost five years I’d given up hope they’d ever see the light!"

"Yeah, I know what you mean. But Tom’s been paying off the bets so he must be confident that it’s true."

They entered the messhall and got their food. Then, looking around they spotted Tom, B’Elanna, Harry and Seven sitting in the corner and went to join them.

"Heard the good news?" asked Tom immediately.

"Yes," said Joe as Sam smiled. "Apparently our plan worked out just fine, although I still don’t see exactly how. They didn’t walk into any of our traps."

"We didn’t need any traps," explained B’Elanna. "I happened to speak to both of them individually and I managed to steer their thinking in the right direction. I know how to press Chakotay’s buttons and I’m pretty good with Janeway, too. You can all thank me for this wonder!"

Seven spoke up. "I, too, had a discussion with the captain when she dropped into Astrometrics. She seemed most perturbed when she arrived so I took the opportunity to discuss romantic love as a developmental aspect of my humanity. She seemed very eager to consider all the possibilities that came up, and I know she was not thinking of my development - although I still do not understand why Harry’s name kept coming up. However, I do believe that I could also be thanked for my part in this."

Tom and Harry looked at each other. "Well," said Harry, "Tom and I managed to get the commander alone for eight hours in the Delta Flyer during that away mission several days ago. It was no accident that we spent most of the time discussing our opinions on how long we figured we’d be stranded out here in the Delta Quadrant. Alone. Decades away from Earth. With only the crew to consider for sharing a rich and full life. I think we almost had him ready to walk out of the airlock at one point. He muttered something about ‘damned cardinal rules’ but I really didn’t hear all of it and he wasn’t in the mood to explain."

"Yeah," said Tom. "And then it was funny how the conversation turned to Captain Janeway and how much we admired and respected her. I was especially touching in my appraisal of her from my sordid past’s point of view, don’t you think, Harry?"

"You were indeed, Tom, you practically had me weeping! But what I really enjoyed was your man’s point of view." laughed Harry. "The commander kept glaring at you and making fists while you were laying it on with a shovel, so I think weeping was not what he was thinking about."

Sam and Joe smiled, and then laughed out loud. "You know, it was the funniest thing," said Joe. "We were sitting in Sandrine’s when the captain and commander came in and asked to join us. They seemed a little uncomfortable at first and then the conversation definitely took on a cozy theme, if you know what I mean." He looked at Sam and she picked up the story.

"I almost felt like they were trying to get Joe and I to, well, get romantic with one another. But we managed to swing the focus around to them and they left pretty shortly after that. And in a definite hurry, too!"

Everyone around the table laughed. After the first month in the DQ there had been more conspiracies on Voyager to matchmake the Executive Staff than anyone could count. The only ones oblivious to the perfection of a romantic Janeway/Chakotay relationship were the two protagonists themselves, and over the years they had proven to be as stubborn as they were blind. Today’s news was particularly satisfying to this group.

"There’s just one thing I don’t understand," said Tom. "I paid out all the money in that one particular pool, and besides myself, there were only two anonymous big winners." He looked around the table. "So, which two of you are hip deep in rations?"

They all stared blankly at him and shook their heads in unison.

Kathryn gleefully ordered a double latte with sprinkles and carefully picked the cup from the replicator to avoid spilling it on her bare skin.

"Isn’t this just the best, Chakotay," she exclaimed as she placed her cup on the coffee table and joined him on the couch. He was sprawled naked down the length of it eating a double deluxe fruit salad and turned on his side to give her room.

"Um-hmmm," he said, popping a raspberry into her mouth. "I did some calculating, Kath, and, if we’re careful after this first little splurge, I think we can coast for almost nine months without eating Neelix’s food. Which is a good thing because you’re going to have to keep your strength up just to last those nine months!" He grinned at her evilly and she grinned back at him.

"Oh, I don’t know, Chakotay. I'm pretty sure that you’ve lived a rather full and satisfying life before you got me into your bed, but I’ve got enough repressed energies to more than make up for your determination in sharing all your knowledge!"

"Well, as long as you know where to come when you need repression alleviation, Kathryn. It’s my job as First Officer to make sure that the Captain is safe and happy and I won’t safeguard the life of anyone who might consider assuming my duties." He looked at her steadily. "Especially Paris. If I find that helm ape within breathing distance of you, Voyager will have a position to fill on the bridge and it won’t be mine."

"Oh, I think you’re safe from any insubordination or mutiny, Commander. I don’t think there’s anyone on Voyager now who really wants to take on both the captain and XO in a personal matter. When it comes to me, all you have to do is concern yourself with where, when, and how." She smiled. "Particularly how. I like leaving the ‘how’ in your capable hands."

He smiled and leaned down as if to kiss her. "I think I can handle that, Kathryn. By the way, I’ve been wondering - which one of us do you think won our matchmaking bet?"

She grabbed his head and pulled him down to her. "We both did, love. We both did."

The End
