Words from Inside the Jacket...

...One such artist who is getting some overdue acclamation is a master Chicago musician, pianist Jodie Christian. A true local legend, Christian has played with a compendium of musicians that would comprise a Who's Who of jazz. He has learned the language of the music from such giants as Charlie Parker and Lester Young. Christian has also served the role of pianist in countless aggregations and helped further the cause of the new jazz as an original member of the A.A.C.M. (the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians). Soul Fountain is his fourth album as a leader for Delmark. Long a city treasure, these releases are making his talents known to the rest of the world.

The music heard on Soul Fountain echoes the sounds of Chicago. This is music as lively and diverse as the jazz styles of the town, a sound captured by the musicians joining Jodie Christian on this album. Youth is well served by the presence of alto saxaphonist Art Porter, while reedman Roscoe Mitchell is a respected elder statesman of the avante garde (who is captured in a solo format on his latest Delmark release, Sound Songs, Delmark 493).
