CMT, October 1999 - EPISODE 4

Intro:

Brian Mansfield: "Martina sounds like she has no fear. A blue-eyed angel in a leaather jacket."

Marty Schiff: "And the crowds.. I... I have always loved her, even when nobody knew who she was."

Tom Douglas: "Her family is out here, which is really cool. Actually (...) herself, how to be able to pull this off."

Greg Foresman: "I think she'd give her career up, if she had to make a choice. I know she would."

If you ask anyone who knows Martina McBride, they'll probably tell you that she's not only the greatest singer they know, but also a woman with great faith and a fierce dedication to her family. Decency and integrity are virtues she nurtures daily. It's a way of life she learned growin' up on farm in a small Kansas town called Sharon, population 200.

Martina has just released a new CD, called Emotion, co-produced wuth Paul Worley. It's her sixth CD. And it sounds as different from the others with sparse instrumentation.

Martina: "With Emotion, you know, I just wanted to be... the sound to be simpler and I went... I went into with the knowledge of trying to hold off adding to much stuff. And so we cut with the smaller band than I've ever used before, just really guitar-based drums and piano. And it ended up being really easy."

Paul Worley: "I love the fact that it's just tracks. I love that you can hear every squeak, every nuance between the notes that the mucisians put down. And there's reall honesty to the music that stays out of the way of her vocal. Her voice has never sounded better than it does now. We were able to record it a little differently and to let it be just huge, because there are not so many tracks for (...)" She truly shines on this album as a singer."

While recording the new CD, and as usual, Martina's two little girls, Delaney and Emma, spent a lot of time in the studio.

Paul Worley: "(...) we've always got our eyes darting around, making sure that their little fingers aren't on the dials, you know. They, they grow up, they... You know, wherever Martina and John are, there are their kids.")

John McBride: "She's serious about her music and she's serious about the kids. And she is... We still have a ball on the bus. We laugh, talk, drink excessively... It's, it's mad. I mean she's really got a little problem. I didn't wanna bring it up, but, you know... I think it will be alright. And... "(John laughs - and didn't you just LOVE him??? LOL  - Ania)

Martina: "My husband has a real great sense of humor. He's funny, he makes me laugh every day. It's a nice bonus to being married."

Paul Worley: "(...) along those lines and it just... and it didn't translate. And rather than give up on a song, we booked another session and came up with a real interesting kind of mysterious, spooky drum groove and synthesized our based track. Very moody track. The words that sound... I mean I define it by listening to the second verse of that song and I feel their heart grow larger."

Once and for all, Martina would like to state that she's not always serious.

Martina: "I think that the thing that people don't really know about me or don't get is that I'm really lot of fun and I have a great sense of humor."

John McBride: "She's really a blast to be around. Her sense of humor is really fun, it's a little off the wall which I love.

Martina: "When I sit down to do an interview, seems, my mind goes to that serious place, that serious thoughtful place."

Paul Worley: "There is that... that look that Martina has and it's very intense look and it took me a long time  to decide for what that look meant. And all that means is that she's going inside now to think about things."

Martina: "You know what, John told me this joke one time and this is so stupid."

Paul Worley: "Martina has a great sense of humor. I would not say that she is a good joke teller. Forgive me, Martina, but you're not a good joke teller."

Martina: "So I shouldn't even tell it cause everybody's gonna think 'That made her laugh, that is so stupid.'

Paul Worley: "John is the joke teller in the family. He's a great joke teller."

Martina: "It's a really old joke too and he's gonna hate it that I tell this but... This guy goes to a... into a chicken house, a hen house to still some chickens. And the farmer comes out and he hears (...) And he goes 'What's going on there?' He comes (...) and he says 'Who's in there?' And this little voice says 'Nobody in here but us chickens.' (laughs) That's stupid. That cracks me up. I think that it's so funny."

Martina: "I read something once about myself which is a very weird thing, when you (...) reads anything about yourself. This said I was like really ambitious and I went 'Really?' Cause I don't feel ambitious. I just wanna do a good job. I just wanna do good work. I wanna do work I'm proud of and I wanna sing good. And make some people happy along the way. And I wanna be a great mother. That's the most important thing to me. And I don't really come out from 'I gotta do better than this person or I really wanna be on top. Or if I'm not on that TV show, we gotta get on that TV show, we gotta...' I don't... I think I go through cycles of it, but it's really not what it's all about for me."
